"One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress."
— Karl Lagerfeld

Its that time of year again when our thoughts turn to winter woollies, Christmas jumpers and party dresses. Come and join our musings and purchasing, high end and high street, we love them all.

Catching up briefly as am half term exhausted.

But wanted to wave at Marsha and say I love HF if she's who I think, very funny and am missing her column. You must meet her, think she'd be great fun in RL. And Prague looks stunning as always, dangerous city to be out in though, have had a very messy work trip there Grin

The styles thing sounds interesting Blair, hope to read it tomorrow. I've been put off the HoC thing as nothing seems to fit me.

LinusLovesBretons · 29/10/2015 22:40

Quick post:

Prague looks amazing marsha

blair I'll have a proper look tomorrow but I think you might be right re. my type

LinusLovesBretons · 29/10/2015 22:51

I just had a look at your links blair and I like a lot of them apart from the ones with the statement necklaces.

I really like those on other people but they look too fussy on me.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 29/10/2015 22:58

i like everything on that board blair and LOVE a lot of it. I think i can be quite girly but that's the thing, it's girly, not grown up glamour which is what the deeper end of the 'romantic' tag suggests to me. the fabrics i can get behind, i love things like silk, velvet and cashemere but beyond that, i just don't feel it. I love quirky little details, the buttons, bows, little frills and flounces, cuts and rips, things where you might not expect them perhaps. In some ways I like to envision myself as Wednesday Addams as an older character, i love little collared dresses with boots and tights for example. Yeah, that's me all over i think, Little miss Addams haha

libertydoddle · 30/10/2015 00:22

You have kicked off a great style chat Blair. I think you are right about me having some ingenue about me. On the blog she says a dark rim around the iris suggests ingenue and I have that as well.as the curly hair...

The thing that really struck me on the blog was her view that your personality can be quite different to your best style. I completely see that romantic styles suit me but I find myself mentally resisting it. I am not completely comfortable with being viewed as sexy (and she says romantic is the stereotype sexy) so while I can see that a fitted curvy looks works on me I feel very self conscious in those looks.

AmberNectarine · 30/10/2015 00:26

That was my Halloween costume for a party on Tuesday one - Wednesday! Was dressed up tonight but just went for a black cat in a velvet mini dress with ears and tail.

I would probably be dramatic classic gamine. My consultant was wavering over whether to make me DG or CG as I have a fair bit of classic. Right choice in the end I think, but if you can have a third characteristic mine would definitely be C.

Longislandicetee · 30/10/2015 07:43

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Got in at 2am.Shock throat raw. Head hurts. Doing children's party at home today. Not smart.

MarshaBrady · 30/10/2015 09:20

Novice [tea] soothing noises

Had a whale of a night. Superb dinner, very cool bar, then luckily for me chose water as a night cap in hotel room with work friends.

Up until 2am as well which means it was nearly 24 hours

Such a riot these visits. I was feeling a bit travel loaded but Prague has made up for it. I think it's mostly the company would be hard if we didn't get on.

FedupNagging · 30/10/2015 09:33

whispers morning all. Sounds like you both had fab nights out Blingy and Marsha. Can you tell all the kids they need to be ghosts - who are silent and just glide about on tippy toes? Halloween Grin

Great style chat last night - I've just read the link and decided I'm classic natural but with more colour. Colour wise, I'm possibly a true winter.

going back to the coloured tights chat from yesterday, I definitely think you could wear them Queen. I have a couple of pairs of coloured and patterned tights which I wear with boots and above knee dresses and skirts so you get a glimpse.

Off out in the rain to look for witches stripy tights for tomorrow.

Ow Blingy school girl error. Nurofen, bacon sarnie & copious amounts of tea?

The natural-dramatic-gamine leapt out at me from the styles, backpacking rock star, yeah baby! Definitely more scope than the HoC ones.

I've had no luck with the bras. Five in 4 different sizes and they all pinch under my arms, very disappointing. They were all plunge though as I don't like a big bit in the centre, so guess I need a different style.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/10/2015 10:11

Hope you woke up miraculously hangover free Blingy! And Marsha, both your nights sound fun. Agree it makes such a difference when you like your colleagues - a necessity really.

Stokey I love the descriptions she puts on the boards, it does help make it easier to "see". I think you've got yourself spot on.

Fedup and Amber you too. I think that site explains it so well that it almost becomes easy to self diagnose a description of your style if you already love clothes and have a style :) I couldn't see it in other people unless I had an idea of what they like to wear.

One I think frills and flounces are very ingenue! One thing I didn't like about HoC is their seeming reluctance to label "romantic" as sexy and therefore I felt it was very blurred with ingenue (girly vs womanly). The blog author explains it very well.

Lib totally get you about personality and style linking together and sometimes clashing. For me the perfect RC dress is the me+em ruched dresses, they are tight enough to be a bit "sexy" but I don't feel self conscious because of the ruching.

Argh another essay, sorry!

Think I'm going to place an order or 2 today. Will link once done Grin

QueenCardi · 30/10/2015 10:37

Loving all the style chat. From what I've seen of that blog I'm an outdoorsy sweetheart! lib I think the thing as a romantic is that 'sexy' looks natural whereas on me it looks tarty and try too hard.
I may try coloured tights for work as no one knows me there so it may not look too out there. As long as I can make them look professional.
Anyone dressing up for Halloween?

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 30/10/2015 11:39

i wear a lot of coloured tights QueenC best advice is to go with darker colours first and work your way along the colour spectrum until you reach a point thats just on the edge of your comfort zone. I tend to find they work best with plain block colours for the rest of the outfit, they tend to clash too much with prints for the effect to be worthwhile IMHO. I usually wear colours like deep greens, damson and plum, even some with glittery bits in them if the mood strikes. TK maxx has a lot of decent quality coloured tights in atm, quality tends to be more important when you are past the teen years so you don't get that 'shine' on them which can make them look cheap, IYSWIM?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/10/2015 12:28

Just did an order from Jaeger. Worked out that so far this season I've bought 8 pieces of knitwear (practically nothing else). Need to stop!
Cropped jumper
Short sleeved jumper in both chocolate and blue, 2 of my 100% colours.

Not doing anything for Halloween. Going to the ILs for the weekend - got a Stella & Dot party tonight, Spectre and a pub dinner tomorrow and going out for tapas with DSis and her bf on Sunday night.

QueenC yes, maybe try navy first or chocolate brown? I like M&S ones and wear those colours sometimes.

shopafrolic · 30/10/2015 13:58

Waves to all. I am sat in a restaurant in Harrods enjoying some time to myself while DH entertains DS elsewhere. It's bliss. Will meet them in a bit.
Blingy thinking of you today. Hope the head eases and things go well this afternoon. Sending love and witchy vibes.
No real fashion news. Am going to have a nose around the 4th floor and buy my annual bauble in the Christmas shop. Too early I know.
We are having friends and their little ones over tomorrow for trick or treating and a hit of food and drink. I got v carried away with the decorations!
Blair I read some of that blog over lunch - there are only 2 outfits on the Dramatic Classic board I would wear. Hmm

herecomesthsun · 30/10/2015 14:26

I am not very convinced by the style "personalities". I would have loved to look like Chrissie Hynde as a teen, but even with a BMI of 18, I had hips. I would look daft with frills and ridiculous as an ingenue at 51. I need to look fairly classic for work and I have found a style that suits me. I do like quirky stuff at weekends and I love silly shoes, mind you.

FedupNagging · 30/10/2015 14:30

Blair love the grey cropped jumper but now you should probably step away from the knitwear!

I am still after wide legged trousers but think maybe these are a bit much, no?

I think a couple of you bought the mock shirt fronts like this last winter - are they any good/stay in place?

I've seen a few styles like this around recently, I used to love the legging/long tunic look and the linen trousers/ long top look so wondering if its making a come back? Would any of you wear this?

I didn't find any stripy tights (shouldn't have shopped so local) but did find giant purple false eyelashes instead. I feel that even witches need to make an effort!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/10/2015 14:53

shop I'd say those were mostly workwear looks though. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying HoC are terrible, just that I think some people who aren't completely satisfied might need a 3rd category. I don't mean to sound evangelical Grin

fedup I bought a bib shirt thing, haven't worn it much but don't think the shirt+jumper look is very me. I found it stayed in place (and it is a cheap river island one) but you have to be careful it doesn't show, the jumper has to be very opaque.

Got these sunglasses at lunch, my opticians ordered them in for me because I get a discount there. It's my first pair of "nice" sunnies.

Stokey · 30/10/2015 14:56

Fedup I got some in whispers Poundworld

shopafrolic · 30/10/2015 17:17

Blair I find it a really interesting read. Sorry, speed typing and cheap service at lunch probably made my comments blunter than they should be. Agree classic dramatic stuff looks very workwear but also not too dramatic..... Will have a dig around more now that I am home. Flowers

shopafrolic · 30/10/2015 17:17

Smelt a lovely new Tom Ford perfume today - Bergamot based. Gorgeous.

shopafrolic · 30/10/2015 18:00

LOVE those sunnies for you Blair
Not loving the COS dress / tunic sorry FedUp but love the idea of those mock shirts so will watch with interest in replies.

FedupNagging · 30/10/2015 20:16

Thanks Stokey that was one shop I didn't get to - will see if I have time tomorrow.

Gorgeous shades Blair. Thanks for bib feedback, think I'll order and see if I like it.

Shop there were some ML jumpers bnwt on ebay the other day - forgot to tell you. And yes, I am guessing quite a few of you won't like that look - it seems halfway between the lagenlook (which my closest friend rocks) and sort of dowdy normcore probably getting my looks all wrong and sounding like I have no idea what I am taking about

I have toothache and another 10 days before my appointment to sort it - I have a cracked tooth which didn't hurt until the dentist poked it yesterday Hmm. Am about to load up on painkillers but may need to beg for an earlier appointment on Monday.

Blingy how did the halloween party go?

OP posts:
Drywhitethanks · 30/10/2015 20:25

Coloured tights......hmm, I was wearing my Gap burgundy merin Crew neck in Next the other day and there were some tights that matched exactly. I was tempted but DD was "you're kidding" Sad ...... I could ignore her, what do you think?

Drywhitethanks · 30/10/2015 20:31

I was also wearing trousers, boots and coat Wink.........
