I am just wondering what the average/norm is?

I also sometimes just get a polish change instead of a full manicure because it's cheaper.

GoofyIsACow · 19/06/2015 18:53

Shellac polish every two weeks, i have curly hair so cut it myself so instead of paying for that, i have my nails done.

Bunbaker · 19/06/2015 18:57

I do my own nails, but go to the hairdresser Grin

louwn · 19/06/2015 18:58

I do my own gels as they weren't even lasting 2 weeks from a salon and that would have gotten pretty expensive! Now when they start to peel I do my own touch ups Smile

eurochick · 19/06/2015 18:59

You might find you don't like it. I hate people digging around with my cuticles and don't find the result better than I can do myself.

Bunbaker · 19/06/2015 19:00

What exactly are gel nails?

Gel nails like Shellac are done with a "soft" gel that has to be cured under ultra violet light. They dry instantly and are hard. They have to be removed by soaking the nail in acetone. They last 2-3 weeks depending how fast your nail grows. They work better for some people than others. I have had good luck with them.

TheWordFactory · 19/06/2015 19:10

I too have gel nails every two weeks.
In summer I also get a pedi at the same time.

TheWordFactory · 19/06/2015 19:12

I've been having them done since 2004 (I know because I got them done for a trip to Florida).

Since then I have never had my own nails on show Shock. Just perfect fakes (which I keep shortish and natural looking, but always painted).

ToomuchChocolatemeansBootcamp · 19/06/2015 19:13

Only for a special occasion usually. They usually last 2-3 weeks unless I have to remove them for work. Although a friend is training to do nails at moment so I may get them done more often than usual Grin

Some helpful answers here Elderflower.....Confused

I have shellac on my fingers every two weeks, have had this done for approximately 4 years. Just an overlay, no extensions.
I have short (just over or level with my finger tips) nails filed in a "squoval" shape.

Same on toes but only every 6 weeks.

I can't say my nails are "wrecked" as I have a new overlay after each removal so don't feel any weakness or peeling.

I've probably broken 3 nails in total since having the shellac.

Cost is £18 for plain CND colours and £23 for fancy effects (glitter, additives etc).

HTH Smile

"Since then I have never had my own nails on show"

Never having my own nails on show would worry me. I would be concerned about the health of my nails if they never see the light of day.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/06/2015 20:09

I do my own, but hear me out!
I tidy my cuticles, file and buff, plus change colour a couple of times a week.
I have lovely nails and actually wouldn't trust a salon with them, they grow well so no need for gels, and I get bored with colour so shellac is pointless for me.

SenecaFalls · 19/06/2015 20:37

You can paint over Shellac with regular polish, btw, if the colors are compatible and you want a temporary change. Just be sure to use a non-acetone remover when you remove the regular polish.

QforCucumber · 19/06/2015 20:44

Mine are my own nails - they grow nicely, which I get a gel polish overlay done every 2-3 weeks, £15 a time at my local one. Which includes removal of old and then doing of a new colour. Friend has just bought the lamp and stuff on groupon - if she manages well I'm tempted to do the same, do enjoy the pamper of someone else doing it though

butterfly133 · 19/06/2015 20:49

It depends what you want and what your lifestyle is like

Shellac and gel last longer but I've never done that. I used to do my own nails once a week with ordinary polish and a good top coat. Doing a manual job, I had to do them every five days. Then I switched to office work and once a week was fine. So if you are only asking for an ordinary polish, I'd say a week?

I must confess I was relieved to see how many people replied saying they don't do it. I did it for 20 years, started out as fun, then good grooming for work....then recently I realused it was a habit and a chore and stopped. I've never bothered about my looks much so it is weird that I got into it.

If you only want to go once a month, you'll need a long lasting one.

mrssmith79 · 19/06/2015 20:51

Own nails, I have Gelish and get it removed, nails shaped and polish changed at a salon every third Saturday at £15 a go so works out a fiver a week.

Trumpton · 19/06/2015 21:00

I do my own with Sensationail led kit every 2 weeks. If I think they are growing out too soon then I over paint with a similar colour of normal varnish. I couldn't go three weeks as the gap at the cuticle would be too big.

How often do you get your nails done?
penguinplease · 19/06/2015 21:00

I have acrylics done every 2/3 weeks

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 19/06/2015 21:03

I go every three weeks. I get them gel polished. £17 a time

They are really ready after 2 weeks, but I dont want to go every other week. I probably would if I didn't work FT or had a family. I keep hinting at a lamp for Christmas, but DH hasn't picked up on it yet.

Tanfastic · 19/06/2015 21:09

I use Sensationail. Do it myself once every two to three weeks. Normal nail varnish lasts about a day on my fingers. Gel with a uv lamp works best for me. Wouldn't get them done at a salon.

Eversobusyeveryday · 19/06/2015 21:24

Gellish every 3 weeks. My natural nails have always been terrible and I keep them very short and painted in a dark colour. Pedi every 6 weeks or so.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 19/06/2015 22:34

I've had gels done in 3 different salons but none last beyond 10 days (1 chipped after 5 days) and my nails were awful for weeks afterwards. Shame really as I'd love neat polished nails & regular polish comes off within a few hours.

SASASI · 19/06/2015 22:51

Every 3 weeks but I'm going to stop end of summer. Was only doing it to get me out of house an hr for some pampering whilst on maternity leave but now I'm back to work it's harder finding the time to go when I would rather be with DS.

It's so lovely to have pretty non chipped nails though!
