How much did your handbag cost?

Mine cost about £20 from TK Maxx. Pleather. Not all that nice tbh.

Looking for a new one and I can't afford the ones I like. I'm not even bothering to put them onto wishlists at shops I like because, frankly, I don't wish to pay £1,500 for a bag. For that cash, I wish to go on holiday to somewhere sunny. But maybe I'm not quite getting this right. I've never felt defined by a bag like, say, a coat.

How much did yours cost - and was it worth it?

AddtoBasket the tate shop have some much more affordable Ally Cappelino here - haven't seen them in the flesh but am considering getting the satchel.

Atm my bag is a Le pliage, which I am using as a nappy bag too. Was about £70 but have used daily since I bought it.

GunShotResidue · 28/03/2015 09:28

Just under half my hanging wardrobe is filled with my coats and jackets, I put the bags over the hanger of the top I like them best with. Some hangers have a jacket and 3 bags on.

AmberNectarine · 28/03/2015 09:37

I've got lots of bags

4 mulberry
2 Alexander wang
1 Balenciaga
1 Gucci
1 MBMJ
2 Anya H
2 Dior
1 LV
1 Valentino
1 Jimmy Choo
1 McQueen

Then a handful of niche but still reasonably expensive brands - Charlotte simone, Raoul, Sophie Anderson etc. I still buy the odd high street one - I have a suede fringed H&M one I'm using frequently at the moment that cost £20.

Next purchase is going to be a Chanel which will be the most expensive to date, but I enjoy my bags so for me it is worth it. I'm not terribly precious about them - they're only things.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/03/2015 09:47

I don't really understand the bag thing. I mean, I don't feel critical of people who spend lots of money on them, it just puzzles me. For me the key is the bag being EXACTLY the right size so I can carry everything I want but don't feel tempted to accumulate random shit. My current one is too big and my last was too small. I miss the one I had before that!

MagentaMouflon · 28/03/2015 10:04

I do get a fluttery feeling about the perfect bag and I have oohed and ahhed over certain ones. I would love a Chloe Edith bowling bag, or there's a black leather briefcase-y Orla Kiely one that I would get if I was a high-flying lawyer.

But even if I had hundreds to spend on a bag, I'd worry I would lose it or get it stolen. Luckily there are so many that I've been able to find bags I love for under £100. I'm happier if it's perfect and cheap! I don't get the love for a bag because it's Mulberry or whatever - but I'm sure if you do have an expensive bag there's a big quality difference. Have repaired my White Stuff one loads of times – it's lovely leather and practically it's exactly what I need, but it's just not stitched together that well.

PrimalLass · 28/03/2015 10:11

Mine was about £65 reduced from £180 on Asos. I love it.

43cupsoftea · 28/03/2015 10:55

I know what you mean about the feeling for a prefect bag!! I had a Tula one that cost £90 and at the time I thought it was perfect. But it turned out it not to be, it was a good size but not quite big enough and the straps were just a bit too short to put over my shoulder if I needed to.
I had equally high hope for Le Pliage and it is almost perfect, but I tend to lose small bits in the bottom so I think I need something that looks as stylish, equal quality, similar capacity, but with an internal structure. I'd take some convincing to spend more than £100 though!

43cupsoftea · 28/03/2015 10:55

Perfect Blush

Cheesymonster · 28/03/2015 13:40

43 you could get a bag organiser/liner for your Le Pliage. Primark sometimes sell them.

Lardylassnomore · 28/03/2015 14:29

Today I am using a mulberry that was half price(I think)in a sale. It's around seven years old!

zinnia · 28/03/2015 15:36

Dancergirl I think you can if you really love it - it's a completely classic style (and I don't say that lightly) so you'll get years of use out of it. Longchamp great quality too of course....

PS my Mimi Berry turned up on eBay at less than half full price. Snapped it up. Zara & Boden ones gone back!

43cupsoftea · 28/03/2015 15:36

I never though of that cheesy! Great idea. I'll have a look. Smile

Dancergirl · 28/03/2015 15:45

Thank you zinnia

Problem is, there are so many beautiful bags in that price range. I also love the Kate Spade Cedar Street Hayden in mint green.

RingtheBells · 28/03/2015 17:50

Magenta, with regards storage, DH has put up some of those cheap peg racks in our small spare room, (only the 2 of us at home now so my clothes can take over a lot of the upstairs space Grin) and all my handbags hang on them, some in their dust bags if they are not much used, as do my spare coats.

When DS moved out, my clothes moved in Grin

Piffpaffpoff · 28/03/2015 18:34

My very best bag was £300ish and is a very posh grown up handbag by a small scottish company Dunmore Scotland.

My everyday one is a black leather satchel from John Lewis which was £80ish a couple of years ago.

My other favourite is a big black bucket tote from M&S about 15 years ago which was I think about £50 which was a HUGE amount of money for me at the time. The shoulder strap on this one is about to break and I'll be so sad when that happens, because this was my first 'proper' handbag. Sad

I love handbags!

My current bag is a Radley Grosvenor and was £200+. I don't change them very often and like a nice quality leather bag. I found it a false economy buying cheaper ones.

Dancergirl · 28/03/2015 20:14

This is the Kate Spade bag I like:

Bernice - I need leather but thanks for the link, I'm ordering the A Capellino pencil case from the Tate. I've been looking for a nice, not twee not leather one for a while and that one is spot on.

I went to TK Maxx on Saturday on a bag mission. Nada. All nasty.

This thread has made me fall in love with Mimi Berry's bags in mandarin (bright orange just goes with everything, so practical).

I like it too Dancer- it's very like this Modalu tote that I'm currently lusting after. It's on sale too, but I spent my treat allowance on Swedish Hasbeens dammit.
