How much did your handbag cost?

Mine cost about £20 from TK Maxx. Pleather. Not all that nice tbh.

Looking for a new one and I can't afford the ones I like. I'm not even bothering to put them onto wishlists at shops I like because, frankly, I don't wish to pay £1,500 for a bag. For that cash, I wish to go on holiday to somewhere sunny. But maybe I'm not quite getting this right. I've never felt defined by a bag like, say, a coat.

How much did yours cost - and was it worth it?

I have about 20 bags, including high street and designer. My last bag purchase was philip lim. The one before was from LK bennet. None of them look worn, as I rotate them. I look for quality over name, so they last and last (I've never thrown an expensive handbag away)

Apatite1 · 27/03/2015 18:03

I forgot to say, current bag is £250 from jaeger.

MagentaMouflon · 27/03/2015 18:27

I have a dark brown White Stuff leather tote bag with lots of pockets, very classic looking, and an Orla Kiely non-leather one. Both were around £80 in sales.

Greengardenpixie · 27/03/2015 18:48

My most expensive bag cost me £120.00. Its an orla kiely midi sling. I have lots of bags. Lots of zatchels. Most have been bought in their fabulous sales. Most other bags are cheap pleather ones out of next. I do love a new bag though. I just get bored with them so i dont tend to go over the top with any one in particular.

nooyearnooname · 27/03/2015 19:00

£310 black Q hillier hobo Marc by Marc Jacobs. It's 6 years old, in daily use, still in fairly good nick and they still sell the same one so it doesn't look dated. Per use it's been an absolute bargain...I do have cheaper ones but find that I 'go off' them quicker so don't use them for very long.

TheCraicDealer · 27/03/2015 19:32

I've got [gulp]

  • Three Longchamps, red, coral and orange; one was £45 on sale, the rest £70 iirc. I like these because you can bung them in the washing machine and they come out brand spank.
  • Mulberry Bayswater, £499 back when their pricing structure wasn't batshit crazy.
  • Mulberry Effie satchel in a light tan, c.£350 from the Mulberry outlet in Cheshire Oaks. I like this one because DBoyfriend went in and picked it for me.
  • Modalu Pippa in black, £180, birthday present from DBoyfirend two and a half years ago. Still in v good nick considering how much I use it for work.
  • Whistles Duffy in oxblood, reduced to about £200. Xmas present from DBoyfriend. It makes a change when I've got an otherwise all black outfit on.

I'm scared to add that up to be honest....!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 27/03/2015 19:36

£75 from Oasis.

Shopgirl1 · 27/03/2015 19:39

I'm not sure I should admit mine, I bought quite a few nice bags pre kids that cost me a lot...as in £1000 plus- Chloe x 2, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Anya Hindmarch, Alexander Wang....they are used non stop and I still love them all, but I won't be adding to my little collection again for a long time :(

cosytoaster · 27/03/2015 19:43

£25 - M & S - I only have the one, really don't get the fuss about bags and some of the designer ones just don't look nice

Saurus72 · 27/03/2015 20:14

Shopgirl sounds like you have a nice little stash Wink How do you manage to use a bag that costs over £1000 without being paranoid that something bag will happen to it though? I just don't think I could relax.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 27/03/2015 22:20

I have about 7 bags from £150-£450.

My max is about £200 atm and one bag a year until kids are bigger and I'm working again - money has to go on boring things for now.

I really want a Mulberry mini Lily atm though and it's £350...

GunShotResidue · 27/03/2015 22:30

The bag I'm using at the minute is £20 from new look. I bought it add I line the colour, bright yellow. It feels very summery.

I have a massive collection of bags, all costing under £50 but some real bargains from eBay/TKMAXX.

GunShotResidue · 27/03/2015 22:32

Forgot to add, i bought a £5 folding changing mat with pockets for wipes and nappies that moves from bag to bag so I didn't have to get a seperate changing bag. I just can't commit to one bag for any length of time!

Dancergirl · 27/03/2015 23:30

Seems that around £200 is a common upper price band. That's sort of my upper limit too with the exception of my mulberry Antony. Don't think I'd pay that sort of money again.

Now....can I justify spending £290 on a Longchamp bag? It's Le Foulonne hobo style.

Cranagh · 28/03/2015 01:05

I spend £300-500 per bag, I like Anya Hindmarch, Burberry and Marc by Marc Jacobs (mostly sale). Worth it to me and all lasting well. I used to be in to higher priced handbag labels pre kids but I'd buy jewellery rather than go over £500 on a bag now.

Redglitter · 28/03/2015 01:18

I've got a ridiculous amount of bags.
My current day to day bag is Louis Vuitton and cost £800. I absolutely love it

Redglitter · 28/03/2015 01:18

All my others I have to add cost less than £100

Iwasbornin1993 · 28/03/2015 03:22

I have a Michael Kors satchel that was around the £300 mark but I bought that as a graduation present to myself so that's how I justified the cost to my usually sensible brainGrin. And to DH2B Wink

DamsonInDistress · 28/03/2015 04:51

Haven't read the entirety of the thread and I suspect I'll be lowering the tone here, but my current bag cost £1 from Poundland! It's a little flower print canvas shoulder bag. Big enough for my bits and bobs, but not so big as to be a bother, and a nice wide opening to just dip my hand in. Suits me fine.

Shonajay · 28/03/2015 05:52

My dearest was a large leather Patrick Cox from a lady on eBay who knows he stuff. Can't remember her name but she hangs all her bags from a beam in her kitchen. I've bought about five from her, and have no doubt theyre all genuine. Think cos patrick cox isn't trendy they're cheaper but they are so well made.

Allice · 28/03/2015 06:16

I have several regular bags, I do like bags.

Most used at the moment is my Longchamp le pliage. Cost about £75 and is so practical, only had it about a month.

I have a mulberry Rosie tote which I've used almost every day for 3 years, it's quilted material with a leather handle, cost £100 ish from the Bicester outlet and still looks as good as new.

For Christmas I bought a 20 year old Louis Vuitton monogram speedy, cost about £200 and looks great as all the leather is honey coloured. It's not terribly practical as small handles but I enjoy looking at it! Must get it out this week.

Lots of bags but the one I'm using most at the moment is a black Zac Posen which was tagged in another S&B thread. I think it was about £300.

My bags range from £12 for a rafia clutch from H&M to well over 100x that for a lovely Celine.

In my head in passing them down to my DD...in reality none of them last that well

MagentaMouflon · 28/03/2015 09:16

People with loads of bags, where on earth do you keep them/put them? Especially if you rotate and use different ones, the others must be within easy reach? We have a proper 3-bed house so not tiny but if I brought one more bag in there'd be nowhere to put it (except somewhere like on the floor in the hall, where it would get run over by a scooter...)

mewkins · 28/03/2015 09:25

When not using a changing bag, I have a lovely mushroom Timberland bucket bag (it was a gift but approx 80 from tkmaxx). And I have a mustard coloured huge leather bag ready for when I go back to work. It was an amazing £15 reduced from 200 in a local posh shoe shop. I love the colour and looking forward to using it.
