How much did your handbag cost?

Mine cost about £20 from TK Maxx. Pleather. Not all that nice tbh.

Looking for a new one and I can't afford the ones I like. I'm not even bothering to put them onto wishlists at shops I like because, frankly, I don't wish to pay £1,500 for a bag. For that cash, I wish to go on holiday to somewhere sunny. But maybe I'm not quite getting this right. I've never felt defined by a bag like, say, a coat.

How much did yours cost - and was it worth it?

I have quite a few Mulberry bags, a small Chanel and some cheaper bags such as Le Pliage, Timberland and brands I don't remember or know well.

Most of my bags are bought on sale, so with 50-75% discount, but there are some I have paid full price for. I think my oldest ones is just around 10 years old and I still use it often.

I could have found cheaper bags which would do exactly the same as the more expensive bags, but I really love using these bags and I think that makes them worth it. I'll be sad to throw them out when they are beyond repair.

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/03/2015 10:27

I tend to use the same day bag day in day out, with just a change for going out. Mine is a leather saddle bag from Zatchels, in a tan colour. Very 70s, although I bought it last year when it wasn't on trend! I think it cost about £80. I've got loads of canvas totes, plus a few going out bags - I'm happy to go £100 or so for something I'll use every day, but not much more.

pinkfrocks · 27/03/2015 10:36

For me around £200 would be the most. I could afford more, much more, but I don't go for 'names' and I also think there is a lot of snob value attached to bags. I don't think many bags are worth the cost ( ie Mulberry) so if I was looking again I'd look at Coach, Radley, Fossil, Whistles, Jigsaw, French Connection, Modalu,....

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 10:38

£150 I think or a bit less in HOF 20% event - DKNY black mock croc leather, not huge but enough to fit purse, small makeup bag, umbrella and travel card etc in side back pocket thing.

bereal7 · 27/03/2015 10:44

Mines £270 and ur was worth it. I'm currently try saving for a £££ one - I like bags :)

worldgonecrazy · 27/03/2015 10:48

I have an everyday LV bag which cost about £500 back in the day before their prices went stupid. At a "cost per wear" we're down to about 20p so I think it was worth it. Unfortunately LV have stopped making the design.

I also have another bag from John Lewis, which was £80 and is also proving to be very versatile.

TK Maxx have some great bags in for amazing prices, but you have to keep looking, and if you want a particular colour then you may not find what you want. I kept looking in there every couple of weeks for a black leather bag but I never found the right one.

Massive radley fan here my current is £200 nautical theme blue and white stripes with brown leather straps. Envy It

zinnia · 27/03/2015 10:53

Dancergirl it was the Mimi Berry 'Honey' in tan (I've posted about this on here before). Leather is beautiful and I love how simple it is but the price freaks me out. So have bought the Zara braided leather (bigger, leather not as nice, bit orangey) and ordered Boden 'Maida Vale' (smaller, nicer than Zara but colour still a bit off) to compare.

And ooh moustache not encountered Anna Pugh before, reminds me of Mimi Berry in the old days before her prices went stratospheric .

Dancergirl · 27/03/2015 11:42

Anyone got a Kate Spade?

cressetmama · 27/03/2015 13:34

Waiting on tenterhooks for the soft brown suede and leather Lambertson Truex bag I found on EBay to be delivered. £80 including import dues for a bag that would have cost four figures (in dollars) is fine by me. Could not bring myself to spend £££, but between sales and TKMaxx, have never been without a reasonable bag, and I've never spent over £100.

Cliffdiver · 27/03/2015 13:37

Handbag? Hmm

My changing bag cost £75.

Strokethefurrywall · 27/03/2015 14:46

Dancergirl I have a few Kate Spades, I love her styles. Very classic.

I had a lovely leather diaper bag, classic tote style, and still looks pretty fresh despite quite a bit of use (not to mention vomit and poo)

NickiFury · 27/03/2015 14:48

Hathall · 27/03/2015 15:14

I have several bags. Most of them have been around £40 mark, often in the sales.
I've got one bag from tkmaxx that hat a retail value of nearly £200 and so many people have commented on it and said they liked it.

swooosh · 27/03/2015 15:17

I have lots ranging from £5 in Primark to a £1400 Chanel (now costs a lot more) as bought a fair few years ago.

I have been using the same one recently, a copy of the Alexander Wang studded bag that I bought from a cheapy shop in Los Angeles, it was $40 and is real leather.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 15:32

I do have a few bags:-

old style Whistles one with buckles and straps - black leather
black suede tote with blue chain and blue fabric handle Zara
Various evening bags ranging from orange Zara fake fur and leather envelope to Blue fake snake box bag Warehouse to dark green snakeskin bag - vintage
navy suede and leather tote
vintage fake fur and brown leather bag
a few Emma Bernhardt bright shopper type bags

I do sometimes think of getting a Michael Kors or Marc By Marc Jacobs bag. My one coveted one was an aunt's Fendi which was soft black leather very minimal metalwork on it, lovely but not available when I looked.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 15:33

The bags above have mostly been in sales - the Zara tote and Whistles bag - the most expensive was the navy suede/leather tote about £80

angeltulips · 27/03/2015 15:42

My 2 most expensive bags are a black Marc by Marc Jacobs big tote (iirc £380) and a black celine cross body trio (an eye watering £780). All the others are a mix of high St or 2nd hand (mostly from Hong kong second hand stores - I have a fantastic black Prada bag that I bought as new for £80).

I must say that the 2 expensive ones get a serious workout - the celine one in particular, is EXACTLY what I need when I'm travelling and I have just about gotten over the price tag.

hippospot · 27/03/2015 16:23

£80 leather, in the sale from a dept store.

AnnieMoor · 27/03/2015 17:05

My bonkers lovely dh bought me a Mulberry Bayswater.

Much as I love it, I feel it's too expensive. I use it every day which feels bonkers too - it should be in its dust bag on a display shelf in my dressing room. Except I don't have a dressing room.

Prior to this I was using a lovely Osprey bag. It was about £300, so not cheap, but I loved it and wore it out.

WipsGlitter · 27/03/2015 17:14

£250 - Christmas present from DP. It's Orla Kiely.

I've a mulberry as well but it needs dyed.

RingtheBells · 27/03/2015 17:20

I've got several, usually £50 -£120 leather bags from either Boden or M&S and I usually try to get them for £30 - £50 in the sales.

Dawndonnaagain · 27/03/2015 17:22

Sixty quid reduced from ninety. Not a label, but hand made, soft as butter, Italian leather in a deep red. Gorgeous without being too loud.

Methe · 27/03/2015 17:25

£80 fossil cross body bag. It's seen better days tbh but bags are one of those things I just cannot get enthusiastic about.
