How much did your handbag cost?

Mine cost about £20 from TK Maxx. Pleather. Not all that nice tbh.

Looking for a new one and I can't afford the ones I like. I'm not even bothering to put them onto wishlists at shops I like because, frankly, I don't wish to pay £1,500 for a bag. For that cash, I wish to go on holiday to somewhere sunny. But maybe I'm not quite getting this right. I've never felt defined by a bag like, say, a coat.

How much did yours cost - and was it worth it?

I have a few that I swap between.

First is a dark grey shoulder bag from pia. Leather. About 5 years old, and showing no signs of wear at all. About £100.

Second and third are radley totes. I have the same bag in red and blue. Single shoulder strap. Leather. Two front pockets. Bought in the sale for about £100 or so each. Bought about 9 months ago.

Fourth is a dark brown radley tote. Very classic. Practical Two straps. About 6 years old, bought for £150.

They are all big enough for large purse, large cards wallet, phone, keys, notebook, bit of make up, tissues etc.

My last one was £200 from Peony Moore and I love it, have a black small one from Russell & Bromley which I've had for years which was about £100 for when I need a small cross body & I'm saving for a Chloe Marcie, which although I know is ridiculous will be worth its as I really look after bags..

SpecificOcean · 26/03/2015 22:51

3 Kipling bags; navy, black and dark purple about £40-50 each and a brown leather charity shop bag £3

defineme · 26/03/2015 23:01

Marks and spencers outlet online-leather oversized tan bag with buckle was £20 down from £80 iirc. It's perfect and makes me happy because it suits every occasion and looks good with black, navy, white etc.
I had a Radley that was £10 from a charity shop, but it looked cheap to me and I cut the silly dog thing off it- I look silly wearing cute things. I gave it away in the end.

mowglik · 26/03/2015 23:26

My most used bags are my yummy mummy changing bag and a wallet on a chain bag - I discovered all I needed to carry for myself was my cards, keys, phone and a lipgloss

My other most used bag when I need a bit more space is my tan fiorelli shoulder bag which was about £55 and still looks perfect despite being thrown around and used frequently

DevaDiva · 26/03/2015 23:27

Currently in love with my Lulu Guiness Wanda Librarian doll face bag, paid £170. I'm not usually a big handbag fan but love her designs and we have an outlet shop nearby at Cheshire Oaks ??

StellaAlpina · 26/03/2015 23:33

Mine are mainly around the £30-£50 mark from places like M&S or Cath Kidston. I'm so unoriginal!

I have one lovely vintage leather one though that my mum gave me as she doesn't like it.

RonaldMcDonald · 26/03/2015 23:35

I have bags and luggage that are v expensive and some bags that are cheap

5 yrs ago it was all about dropping 1-5 k on a bag now not so much

I tend to buy native leather now when I travel but I realise that sounds like utterly twattish bilge

cogitosum · 26/03/2015 23:38

I've got a beautiful leather non-branded bag from a market for around £50.

cogitosum · 26/03/2015 23:39

Prior to this I had a mulberry bag that wasn't as nice leather for £700

Boomf · 26/03/2015 23:47

Addtobasket. - I've got the Alicia in the tan. It's a lovely bag!

zinnia · 27/03/2015 00:46

I've had a few over the years, but have never spent more than £300. Nor would I want to - I love my bags but they're only bags. Am another one who never pays full price (discount vouchers/ sales/ sample sales).

Currently for work alternate between a black hobo and navy rucksack, both Whistles, both around the £250 mark (birthday presents to self on successive years, bought with 20-25% off discounts).

This very week I've spent just shy of £300 on a bag I've been lusting after for 2 years, only to panic at the price and order a couple of similar ones at about the £100 mark just to compare. I buy about one bag a year usually so they have to be amazing.

ThatBloodyWoman · 27/03/2015 00:51

The one I'm using at the moment was £2.99 in Oxfam.
It does the job.
I can carry stuff about in it.

30andtired · 27/03/2015 02:50

Normally go between my slouchy leather £210 in a nice coral shade or my back smart tote that was £265.

However 4 days ago I got out my Primark £8 cross body and it's so easy to carry with a 2yr old I think I'll be sticking with it for a while.

Had more compliments on my £8 bag in a few days that I've ever had on my more expensive ones put together Blush

Saurus72 · 27/03/2015 06:20

Addtobasket - they are lovely, but eye wateringly expensive full price! They have really good sample sales in London twice a year - May and November usually, may be worth looking out for.

0ddsocks · 27/03/2015 06:36

I have an orla kiely maxi sling - love big bags Grin. I think it is worth about £150ish pounds but I got it off eBay for £70. I don't think I've ever spent more than £100 on a bag.

Sadly the bag I use most is the black rucksack carrying changing things for small children Sad

LittleMissRayofHope · 27/03/2015 06:51

£460 Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM.
Have matching key pouch (£105) that I use as a purse as it fits cards and some change in.
I've had it for about 4 years now and still absolutely love it. It is starting to look a bit used and worn but I'll likely never afford another one.
Was bought pre children when I had money
I have in fact used it as a baby bag once or twice!!

Dancergirl · 27/03/2015 07:43

zinnia what bag did you get?

I love bags and my average spend has crept up in recent years. I have a couple of Mulberries - one bought years ago when they werent so ridiculously expensive, it's a grab bag with the pebble effect and leather trim, think it was about £200, it was my first expensive bag.

I also have a Mulberry Antony messenger which was £££ but it's such a classic and I use it loads.

I've got a lovely red Radley bought half price in John Lewis sale, think it was about £100.

I've got a small Modulu Pippa in blue, again in the sale.

I've got a navy Peony and Moore which is ok but not great quality for the money.

I am now considering a Longchamp bag, they're lovely quality.

I've also recently discovered Kate Spade, anyone got one? I went to Bicester recently and looked in their shop. Some really lovely bags at great discounts.

SycamoreMum · 27/03/2015 07:56

I have a hugeee collection of bags!! Since I've moved I've kept the locked away but I'm juggling between 3 now:

My Love Moschino Beastie which was around £200 I think.

My DKNY saffiano which is the love of my life and cost £245.

And my ultimate bag that was part gift; The Fendi changing bag Shock it was around £800.

mrssmith79 · 27/03/2015 08:00

Atm I've got a Fossil cross-body canvas affair for weekends as my weekday handbag is an enormous leather tote that I use for work so needs to be big enough to stuff all manner of paperwork / diary / laptop into. One was £60 ish and the other about £200 iirc.

southeastastra · 27/03/2015 08:07

zara always have nice bags op

TheoriginalLEM · 27/03/2015 08:08

£70 cath kidstone bag - and i don't like cath kistone stuff but the handle was a multi coloured striped cotton and i love this bag. It was a birthday present but i chose it. would never spend more than that and £70 was a massive extravagance . it made me disproportionately happy Blush

43cupsoftea · 27/03/2015 08:09

I have the Longchamps Le Pliage in navy with tan handles. Cost about £70 and I love it. Gets some hammer and it still looks pristine. I also have a navy leather backpack from John Lewis which was £50, but is incredibly useful on holiday.

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 27/03/2015 08:38

For the last 3 or 4 years I have had a Beaumont Organic one that was £199 when I bought it, but has since gone up to £275.

Yesterday my husband bought me a new one as a 40th birthday present (won't get it til May though). dark brown leather £249 by Anna Pugh, handmade in Brighton. I expect it to last around 5 years I think.

The old handbag is quite big and has plenty of wear left in it, so I will probably start using it as an overnight bag.

Eliza22 · 27/03/2015 08:49

About £70, twenty years ago, whilst holidaying in Florence. I have other bags but this is my workhorse everyday one. The leather still looks new and I get asked constantly where it's from. My hairdresser asked me recently, if should ever want to sell it, can she buy it? The original lining went (it's a bucket bag) so I just made another for it.

It is truly a thing of beauty and is chosen time and time again by me, over my Mulberry.
