Are you a winter colouring? If so come and join us for chat about clothes/make up following on from part 1 here and part 2 here

Do you want to know more about what a winter is? These resources are good places to start here and here.

Scared to try bright lipstick? Previous winter favourite makeup items include Mac Plumful, Revlon Lip Butters in Berry Smoothie and Red Velvet and Revlon gloss in Bordeaux. They are all good places to start without being scarily bright for a newly diagnosed winter. More makeup tips can be found here and by reading through previous threads.

Shame about the coat it's looks really cute :(

Stokey · 20/07/2014 20:03

Hello, I've just been diagnosed as a sultry winter and so am reading this thread to see what you're all buying. Looking at my wardrobe I have quite a few good reds, blues and of course blacks and greys. Any pink scares me though but I have bought the fuschia lipstick .

Someone was asking about Mac lipsticks. I have Ruby Woo which is a great matte red. I also have a Channel bluey red, number 14.

Bittersweet my consultant said to make sure you don't get red tints in your hair as winter should be properly dark or grey (cool tones) but no reddish tones. Blue may work though!

QueenCardigan · 21/07/2014 16:35

Welcome stokey. It's great that you have so much in your colours already. Do you have much that you will get rid of? Which fuschia lippy did you buy?

I bought this today. Perfect ice blue colour, perfect style for me so v happy.

Some great colours in the new stuff in shops. As others have said, oasis seems to have a lot of pinks and if you don't mind polyester then dorothy Perkins has some great tops too.

Stokey · 21/07/2014 17:07

Thanks QueenC . I got the 62 Fuschia from HOC - it's very bright! DM bought the damson one, 54, which she also thinks is bright but looks great on her.

I have a cream Zara jacket that I've been wearing a lot that should probably be ditched and a very yellow Boden dress that I have only worn once so I may try and ebay it.

The ice blue top is lovely. My better "ice" colours were the green and aqua. I had a couple of double-star darker colours - The dark green and indigo _ that I don't own anything in so may start looking for those, now that AW clothes are coming in.

Do you tend to carry your wallets around everywhere? And concentrate on the 100% stuff, or just look for a bit of everything?

SorrelForbes · 21/07/2014 19:31

Hello Stokey I have the 62 HoC lipstick. It's one of my favourites but I do find it a bit dry to wear all day.

I take my wallet and book (and my style cards) everywhere!

SorrelForbes · 21/07/2014 19:44

Some okish cobalt pieces in the new Boden catalogue. Most stuff seems to be very muted/faded.

I've just looked online and the Ravello top is back again for A/W but not in any of our colours Sad.

The Rosalyn top in navy looks quite nice but it's pricey at £49.

I like this pewter bag but the site won't let me add it to my cart (not that I was intending to buy it now!)

Magenta pencil skirt.

As usual some good shapes and styles but too much ivory/cream background to prints/stripes. This dress is labelled as black/silver/grey but definitely looks cream to me!

QueenCardigan · 21/07/2014 20:30

Oh my god sorrell I love that bag! I forgot to say that I bought this bag today. It's a silver/pewter colour, almost mole,so a very good basic. I had wanted grey but I actually think the shininess of this will work better for me.

stokey 62 is my favourite too. I find it a bit full on for day time so tend to save it for nights out. I tend to wear rimmel funtime fuschia during the day and just kind of finger it on.

Wrt the wallet, if I'm doing a big shopping trip then I do tend to take it with me but I'm finding I'm using it less and less. I've become much better at spotting what's right and what isn't but some of the bright blues (lagoon/Chinese) and greens can still be tricky to get right.

Stokey · 21/07/2014 21:24

I love that bag QueenC and will check out the Rommel fuschia.

I like the green ponte skater dress at Boden but an not sure if the colour is right. The plum may be better (on my phone so can't link). What ate the car dies like? There's a nice dark green cropped cashmere one but £89...

Stokey · 21/07/2014 21:24

Ah stupid predictive text. What are the car dies like?!

fooogle · 22/07/2014 09:51

Grin at car dies... Stokey!

I've not actually kept much from Boden. I think quite a lot of Springs (I used to be a Spring) had bought the cashmere cropped ones. I am way to stingy and tend to pounce on cashmere in charity shops when I find it (never quite the shapes I'd want but often good quality mens jumpers and I like them with skinny jeans in winter).

Like those silver bags Sorrel and Queen. I am still using my tan one, not winter colour but I just like tan leather... Could do with a smaller one though as I put too much in it and end up with sore neck/shoulders...!

Eeeek winters, I've lost my wallet!!! I have a horrible feeling I have charity shopped it somehow and sent it in with clothes. I called the place but no one seems to have it. £45 for another so I am a bit torn but I am not sure I can go it alone!

Have this from Kettlewell in raspberry red and ordered this in ice blue but think it is the wrong length for me so prob will return.Ordered this too in iced aqua but I def' agree that this is not one of my best colours as rated as 1 tick at 50% or something. Stokey was it you that wanted greens?

I've ordered a lippy in Absolute Red by NYX. Will let you know. I am such a terror on lipsticks and have way too many. Am wearing Prohibition today from Superdrug range. Its a purple-y pink/raspberry. I like No. 62 as well but have found that Mac Girl About Town is very similar and slightly less drying? Do you find red a more classic look that pink?

fooogle · 22/07/2014 09:55

lippy. Really need to get them all together so I know what I've got. The differences are embarrassingly infinitesimal! Blush

Stokey · 22/07/2014 10:27

That red lipstick looks lovely Foogle. I think I have four reds in infinitesimally different shades too. I love red but find it a bit more dressy than pink. Though I was inspired by a Lisa Eldridge tutorial where she says how she loves wearing red lipstick at the weekends with jeans and a tee.

Car dies twice Blush, really I mustn't MN on my phone but DH had the computer.

This is the skater dress in green, plum or navy. Looks quite good for work. Yes I am looking for greens - one of my double stars at 100 is the darkest green (pine?).

I'm wearing an electric blue top and navy skirt today which I would never have thought of putting together before HOC but actually work really well.

fooogle · 22/07/2014 10:42

oops just ordered these
Will try and see. May look awful on me but search for closed toe shoes (as with work policy is a hard one!).

Stokey yes I liked Lisa Eldridge's ideas about lippy though I think it may all be in mind set. I often feel like a badly dressed drag queen but maybe look spectacular!

That skater dress looks good. I bought an electric blue one on ebay from warehouse the other week (99p!) but it is pretty bloomin short, I'm not sure I can wear it without flashing!... That Boden one looks like a good length. The green is hard to tell... Pine green I find hard to find. Often leans towards khaki.

MUST work...naughty me...

carrie74 · 22/07/2014 11:44

Hello All, longtime lurker here. Love looking at all of your purchases. I'm a Jewel Winter, and my favourite colours are cobalt and bright greens (can't remember actual HOC names). I bought a gorgeous YSL lipgloss at the weekend:
www.johnlewis.com/yves-saint-laurent-rouge-pur-couture-vernis-l-vres/p1539363?kpid=232702637&s_kenid=1cd4ee51-e071-2588-328c-00006666a98e&s_kwcid=106x69112&tmad=c&tmcampid=73

It's berry scented, which may make me lick it off a bit quickly though! Kind of a pinky plum colour, not too obvious.

My hair is naturally brunette with some red highlights. I colour to cover the grey, but in all this sunshine (NO complaints!), my hair really goes a very non-winter colour with quite a reddy tone. I only have ash tints in my hair to counteract the brassiness, but nothing seem to help. Anyone else have this problem? I'm also quite tanned and very freckly, and I'm not sure my colours are quite as right as when I'm pale in winter. Anyone else find this?

Stokey · 22/07/2014 12:20

Nice lipstick Carrie looks very wearable.

I just had my colours done and was worried about this. I'm brown at the moment too but am normally a lot paler and freckly - I think in the winter there is more contrast between my skin and my freckles. So I did ask the consultant but she said you'd be the same regardless. My hair also gets a bit red in the sun and is dyed dark brown to cover the grey. Consultant said to make sure your dye was properly brown and not red tinted, and also said grey suits winter (I'm not ready to go there yet, and neither is DM!).

When they first categorise you, they chose from dark, bright, fair or something else (can't remember), and can't see myself being anything other than dark. This means winter or autumn, but I know orangey/browny colours don't really suit my olive skin tone. But if you're unsure, maybe talk to your consultant and she could reassess you in the winter? If your skin is more pinky in tone maybe you'd be a summer?

QueenCardigan · 22/07/2014 13:25

Hi carrie. Nice lippy. You certainly looked fab in navy at the weekend. I'm still amazed at how different we are both and so not typical winters (for anyone wondering, I met her irl). I haven't found having a tan makes a difference to my colours but my hair certainly looks better as it goes more white blonde in the sun and becomes brighter rather than the dull colour it goes in winter.

stokey I have a boden cardi. They come up big and I have the smallest size. I kept it anyway because it is a fab Chinese blue colour but it would be even better if it was a teeny bit smaller. It's not one of the cashmere ones, just the everyday cardi.

I can't do red lipstick. I've tried and I bought one on the day but it just doesn't feel me. I think that's more to do with my style though and I think you need to be more classic or dramatic to pull it off. Pinks are definitely better for me.

stokey I like that green dress. I often find that green can be hard to judge on a screen. It can either be too yellow-y or too blue-y and teal-y.

ItHasANiceRingWhenYouLaugh · 22/07/2014 14:42

I have found it hard to wear red lipstick but have been happy with HOC lip gloss 87... Blotted down it gives a lovely wearable red. Fuschia lip gloss shade 84 I am also wearing more and more.

MissScatterbrain · 22/07/2014 14:56

I look better in the darker winter clothes without a tan (more contrast) but if I wear white which isn't one of my good colours, when I am tanned, I look better in it.

I don't tan deeply or easily though.

Carrie - get some Aveda Black Malva conditioner, its fantastic stuff for toning down red tones, helps prolong hair dyes and a large tube lasts ages if you only use it once or twice a week.

I prefer plum or red for lipsticks although hot pink is fun esp when worn with a matching accessories/nail polish.

I think I must have gamine in my style profile - recently had my hair chopped and suddenly I feel complete - perhaps I am a dramatic gamine rather than classic.

ItHasANiceRingWhenYouLaugh · 22/07/2014 15:27

Ooh, I'm a dramatic gamine! It all made sense when she told me to think of Ruby Wax...

MissScatterbrain · 22/07/2014 15:40

Tell me more about being a dramatic gamine - what have you been advised to wear? what about patterns? do DGs wear scarves, necklaces etc?

Not sure if I want to be Ruby Wax but thinking of her does make sense if you see what I mean!

carrie74 · 22/07/2014 16:20

Thanks All, especially queenc ;)

White is def my go to colour in the summer, and I feel much better wearing black with a tan than I do when pasty white.

I can't embrace red lips: I think my lips are too thin. I also think my personal style (though I diagnosed) is on the natural side of things, so I'm really struggling with the non nude lips. And I like things quite simple and tailored: maybe natural gamine (but what do I know? I thought I would be an autumn colouring!).

Thanks for the Aveda rec msS, will look that up x

carrie74 · 22/07/2014 16:22

And YY to. queenc about how very very different we look, neither of us with that traditional winter colouring which I always think of as Irish (black hair , translucent skin: like The Corrs or Courtney Cox). It really makes colour analysis all the more interesting.

carrie74 · 22/07/2014 16:25

Oh and finally (sorry!), has anyone tried dying any clothes? I've got 2 dresses that are wrong greens: one's a pale khaki and the other a milky sea green. I was thinking of trying to dye them, but wonder if I'd only have success. (If at all) if I used v dark green, or a charcoal or black. Any experiences?

Stokey · 22/07/2014 16:26

I use the Aveda conditioner too MissS

And thanks for the Boden cardie advice QueenC (cardie guru!). I agree green is very difficult to see properly on line. I think I'll wait and look in RL shops.

I'm intrigued by the styles too. None of them jumped out at me, I'm curvy and petite but find the romantic stuff a bit flouncy.

Some of the light pinks have good blue undertones Carrie. I have a Bobbi Brown that I think works - it may be this.

mimiasovitch · 22/07/2014 16:41

After having the colour analysis in the middle of June, I've finally got my arse to the hairdressers. I've always (since having some greys) gone for warm browns, with some lighter streaks, which have inevitably gone a most attractive shade of orange in the sun. I have finally accepted that I will never make a good redhead and requested a single shade of dark, no warmth at all brown. I think we went for Blueberry Chestnut,(though it may have been frosted chestnut), and I swear, I have never had so many compliments about my hair. I feel embarrassed I was getting it so wrong for so long.

On the plus side I bought a new lipstick. Estee lauder colour envy in Red Ego. It feels amazing on, really luxurious, and was free (with Boots points, but I'll skirt over that.
