This space is for anyone who wants to talk about perfumes - ask for recommendations, tell us which scent you are wearing today (=SOTD), list your favorites...

I'm wearing Dolce&Gabbana's Velvet Love. Nice but instantly forgettable. I guess carnations (which I think are supposed to be the main note) aren't known for their strong and distinctive scent.

My Ananya perfume oil has arrived so I will use that later. Just a whiff from the bottle took me back 20 years.

Thanks for the warning teta. I am after some Liz Earle Botanical No 100 after Fuzz's delivery, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere and there are no decants to be had. I'll have to sit on my credit card and be patient...

wiltingfast · 02/04/2014 10:50

omg! I forgot to put on perfume this morning

whew, old sample of florabotanica, that will just have to do Grin

BeCool · 02/04/2014 11:23

Me too wilting - I will pop into Boots at lunchtime and try something new.

Now what to try???

FuzzLightbeard · 02/04/2014 11:36

Teta thank you for the heads up! Menthe Fraiche sounds really interesting, so nice to get a compliment on your perfume as well.

Science oh no, I hope the Liz Earle isn't discontinued. I had a quick look on her website and it's not listed there so that could be the case.

Wilting Shock thank goodness for emergency perfume Wink

Frugal is the new AA the one inspired by Caipirinhas? I haven't tried it but am intrigued.

SOTD is Tabac Rouge by Phaedon, opens with ground cinnamon and ginger and evolves into a gorgeously moreish loose tobacco and honey. Takes me back to watching my Grandad make his roll-ups and the scent of his tobacco tin.

FrugalFashionista · 02/04/2014 12:37

Just a big thumbs-up to In Love Again, hope you'll find a great budget bottle Teta. A woman across the aisle was wearing it on the dreary red-eye flight I took on Sunday and wafts of it were lovely! I've been fairly jet-lag free but this morning it hit me like a ton of bricks and I had to go out for a cappucino to stay awake I find AA Figue Iris super comforting and am repeat wearing it.

I'd panic had I forgotten to pack a vial of something

I haven't tried the new caipirinha-themed AA yet - tbh I was a bit disappointed when I heard which fruit they picked. Caipirinhas are lovely but lime in perfumes can smell like oven cleaner Wink The lovely Virgin Island Water is an exception but Jo Malone has one that smells like Thai takeout... Wish they had picked maracuja, papaya or caju or something - papaya juice has a slightly queasy perfume-like taste anyway Wink But will definitely try it (maybe it could be layered with Menthe Fraiche for a mojito vibe?) and also keep an eye out for their duty free exclusive. AA Nerolia Bianca was one of my most-worn perfumes last year - used a total of 5-10ml which must be a record for me - so easy to wear!

Phew: uk.lizearle.com/stock-status

ScienceRocks · 03/04/2014 09:09

Serge lutens de profundis today. It is somewhere between the grown up Chanel-types and the more flowery scents that I favour. Apparently it is big on violets, but I don't get that old lady vibe that I associate with that floral. Wonder if it will last...

Loved the ananya yesterday. So warm and redolent of my teenage years. Very glad to have it back in my life, it transports me to a time when life was, if not simpler, a lot less complicated in many ways. Fewer responsibilities. Great staying power too and it didn't irritate my poorly skin because it's an oil.

teta · 03/04/2014 12:04

OK,it wasn't Menthe Fraiche that got the compliment ,it was Kilians 'Good Girl Gone Bad' ( similar bottle to the Nose ones I received with the Heeleys in) sent to me courtesy of Frugal. But I actually can't smell any ' bad' in it at all.Its a lovely unassuming floral scent and something I would wear if it wasn't the price it is.
I love violets Science and I also love flowery scents as I really don't like to 'reek' of perfume.Though I have just ordered a sample of Heeleys Cardinal - some perfumistas favourite incense scent apparently.
Frugal I also really dislike the Jo Malone Lime cologne but adore Virgin Island Water. The Kilian has some similar notes to 'In Love Again',as does the Heeleys Vervaine I believe.

FuzzLightbeard · 03/04/2014 13:31

Science I had a friend at Uni who always wore Ananya when we went out clubbing. It reminds me of some great times (I used to wear original Chloe, people must have smelled us from a mile off!)

Does anyone else take great pleasure in doing banal everyday stuff whilst wearing exquisite fragrances? I put the rubbish out earlier in my slippers with Guerlain's Rose Barbare (thanks Science!) wafting elegantly around me. It makes tiresome jobs much more bearable Grin

ScienceRocks · 03/04/2014 14:00

Yes, I do that Fuzz. I work from home as a writer, so made a very dry feature on therapeutic drug monitoring much better this week by wearing Liz Earle Botanical 100. Sometimes I even put perfume on at bedtime because it makes the bed smell so lovely!

I used to wear Chloe too. I remember the lovely bottle and thought I was so classy Grin Glad you have liked the samples I sent you.

Just cracked and ordered my samples from Nose Smile

BridgeMix · 03/04/2014 14:50

FuzzLightBeard - what a name! Grin
Yes, fancy perfume is a lovely luxury for more mundane days…
I am working from home in a cloud of Frederic Malle - Dries van Noten!

FrugalFashionista · 03/04/2014 15:09

Fuzz I love the idea of wearing Rose Barbare when taking out the trash Wink
I love unique and exclusive perfumes, they feel so great, and use them exactly like Science. Dries is a great cool weather work perfume for me - a bit like a protective layer or a magic shawl.
Teta GGGB is a typical Kilian - a pretty tame and conventional mainstream idea executed really well with great ingredients. It's really dispersive and I keep a vial for myself for cold, rainy days.

This thread is getting so eclectic! Many of you are wearing überniche stuff I have never even tried Grin

SOTD AA Figue Iris

OP posts:
BridgeMix · 03/04/2014 17:21

Frugal, I may come back to Dries in autumn… to be honest, I'm liking it but feel that it doesn't really last, or project - for the cost of it, it should!

teta · 03/04/2014 20:47

Wore Miller Harris 'Terre d'Iris today. It was cold here today and this smells warm to me.The base notes are powdery rose and smell like the pot of rose talcum powder my Mum used to buy me ( with a huge powder puff) when I was a child.I'm missing my scented early evening dog walk tonight as the weather is horrible tonight ( last night the hedgerows smelt magical).

cressetmama · 03/04/2014 21:03

SOTD is Odin's 11 Semma from Nose. Huge thanks to the clever person who found this. I have two new favourites, one in each of my perfume dimensions...... Thanks

FrugalFashionista · 03/04/2014 21:03

Bridge it was over 20C here yesterday and in the evening my usual winter lite ambers, orientals and vanillas smelled totally off, a bit suffocating. Time to revisit to colognes, greens, irises...

Teta iris notes have a split personality. Dry and papery, cool and carroty, or warm and powdery. Iris Poudre and Dior Homme are of the last type... You seem to have found quite a few things you love and are also learning what you dislike. Most important, you seem to love the exploration!

FrugalFashionista · 03/04/2014 21:18

Sorry about failure to proofread!

I'm so glad the Nose.fr experiment is working out! They make super-niche affordable and fun!
Please keep them in business Wink

And no, I'm not receiving any kickbacks from anyone - and I am not on Kilian's payroll though I've briefly met him in a party and he is pretty cute (Francis K is way cuter though) Wink I only recommend perfumers and brands that I personally like or feel curious about and try to stay shtum about 'fumes I dislike. I love perfume and want to share the good stuff...

Tom Ford Lys Fume today. When it went on, I was a little concerned it might be decomposing lilies, but it has settled into something very special. Quite grown up too, so fitting for the work I have on today when I need to pretend that I know what I'm talking about!

Come on Frugal, spill on your perfume dislikes!

ArsePaste · 04/04/2014 10:08

Today I'm wearing Aqua Manda over a base of Tom Ford Neroli Portofino body oil. Thought it would be all summery. But, alas, I'm FREEZING.

FuzzLightbeard · 04/04/2014 12:14

Bridge my username is a result of my DCs obsession with Toy Story films and DS1 mixing up his letters Grin

SOTD is Bois Blond by Parfumerie Generale, I too was hoping for a sunny day ArsePaste and thought I would test this based on the supposed notes of grass and hay. Actually I'm finding it more warm, ambery and woody and in the later stages, reminds me a lot of LADDM. I think it's a little too on the masculine side for me

teta · 04/04/2014 13:32

I've just sprayed myself with Heeleys 'Iris de Nuit' - pungeant 1960's hairspray blasts out violently. Its the first Heeleys one I dislike.Sel Marin smells like a jar of cockles,Hippie Rose is absolutely gorgeous and Cardinal is stunning in an incense type of way.As you can tell I'm having a bit of a James Heeley moment.Grin.Not helped by the easy and tempting samples at Nose.Frugal please do tell!

wiltingfast · 04/04/2014 14:06

I love Cardinal!

SOTD is pc02 also courtesy of Nose Grin, it's really growing on me though dh said i smelled like blackcurrant jam... funny I don't get jam at all but bergamot and spice, maybe some honey

FuzzLightbeard · 04/04/2014 17:31

Frugal please could I pick your brains? I know someone who is off to Rome on holiday in a few weeks and they will try and buy a bottle of L'Erbolario Meharees for me. Do you know if you can buy it at the airport as that would be easiest for them. Thanks muchly Smile

FrugalFashionista · 04/04/2014 20:03

Fuzz there is a pharmacia at Fiumicino T3 C/D and l'erbolario is often sold in pharmacies and erboristerias. Cannot remember what they have. If she is not successful, let me know - it can send it to you.

SOTDs Le Temps d'une Fete (much nicer dabbed than sprayed - it was deathly strong sprayed, a common theme among Nicolais), then AA Figue Iris for a party, now Shalimar sur le route du Mexique (or whatever, one of the longest flanker names in history) which I really like. The only problem - only 70+ women wear Shalimar around here so I have to enjoy it in private. I was inspired by a lady on the tram who looked at least hundred years old who wore you know what Wink

FrugalFashionista · 04/04/2014 20:09

Oh and I love Heeley. He can even do an aquatic perfume that I enjoy Wish he had the powerful distribution Jo Malone has - we'd all smell much better as a result! Wink Will dig out my L'Amandiere soon.
Cardinal is very close to Avignon iirc but not a carbon copy. The Comme des Garcons Incense series is pretty wonderful too.
