Hi there Maredebois and welcome.

Some thoughts....If you are a classic' then that essentially is what you must be but you can ring some changes by looking at texture and colour. If you like a classic navy cardigan then look at unusual weaves and knits (Stella very good for this). Look for changes in cut- dropped shoulders, bracelet sleeves worn with a different colour skinny thin T underneath. Look at unusual pleating (Marni are great at this), embellishment (Marni again) and different lengths. Look for colours you wouldn't normally wear but like and buy them as inexpensive T's that you can try out without wasting a lot of cash if you find they aren't feeling 'you'. I love a flash of deep pink or Fuschia under a navy sweater or top, a flash of orange under Olive and deep red with olive green.

Same with pants. If you like a skinny cut then try on some skinny pants in different fabrics and colours. Try a mercurised cotton for Summer in a smoke blue or Airforce blue or a soft grey. Not too much of a change from a jean- won't frighten the horses so to speak until you get used to it. Experiment with Sailor pant cuts too -they look lovely with skinny T's or slouchy ones. Dark Olive Green is a more offbeat classic shade and lovely in the Summer and looks good with a Breton top.

What is your body shape may I ask?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 28/01/2014 22:31

Dry I was about to click your link when I saw the name of the site - sounds horrific! I am pretending I never saw it but I'm going to send it to my brother who lives breathes and sleeps cycling.

Welcome maradesbois! You sound a bit like me, am also quite classic and struggle with casual wear (I work in an office and am reluctant to spend more on things I only wear at the weekends, except for jeans).

Umlauf Yay, I remember Wendy did several looks with some last winter, they looked good. Here

AmberNectarine · 28/01/2014 22:35

Right my three loves:

Equipment zebra print shirt
Alex Monroe prawn necklace
Jimmy Choo glitter high tops/Marant Wedge high tops
Tibi Lobster sweater
McQ hummingbird skirt

Ok that's more than three

Don't works:

LKB black shift dress
J Brand Houlihans - wrong colour, don't have the legs
Tiffany key locket pendant thing - DH bought it for me, so wrong but I wear it occasionally out of guilt.

maradesbois · 28/01/2014 22:53

Thank you for welcomes and mignonette's helpful comments, plenty of good ideas there to try re. shape, colour and fabric. Body shape is quite well proportioned size 12, am fairly tall (170cm), long legs & arms, less confident around the middle but am in process of trying to shed a stone which think is another reason why I'm reluctant to put too much money into clothes at the moment apart from coats. Having said that I picked up this little number www.theoutnet.com/intl/product/417092 at Bicester for a steal (half the outnet price) and the cobalt blue is a bold move away from navy for me!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 28/01/2014 22:59

^^ I lol'ed!

Re style analysis, this link is quite good and if you know what you like wearing, you can get an idea of what else might suit you.
Personal Clothing Styles

Must go to bed soon as DP has "Botched Bodies" on and I am trying to avoid looking.

MarshaBrady · 28/01/2014 23:05

MarshaBrady · 28/01/2014 23:07

Mignonette · 28/01/2014 23:34

This month's American Vogue has letter from Mumsnetter defending the site after Kate Winslet and Vicki Woods called it whiney in her interview!

Mignonette · 28/01/2014 23:36

Oh and another love -

Rag & Bone pleat and fold dress in petrol blue.

And one more

Pour La Victoire snake brogues.

Mignonette · 28/01/2014 23:36

Last- Creatures Of The Wind metallic pink and sand shimmer embellished skirt (on my pin)

Umlauf · 29/01/2014 08:35

Hello marade welcome! Lots of fantastic advice by mig . Your style sounds lovely. love that Stella jacket, the collar is fantastic, great find. I also love the petit bateau marinieres.

Interesting link blair it says I'm a romantic.

I am risking the AR CS and ordered bargainous leather shorts seeing as I'm sending the coated skinnies back. If they fit, I shall need lots of help styling them. I'm thinking at the moment with tights, black ankle boots and a heavy Breton perhaps? Would love to wear them in summer without tights a la Pinterest but surely they'd get all hot?!!

shopafrolic · 29/01/2014 08:39

Morning all
Welcome maradesbois - you probably know how much I love a lurker but especially one whose favourite brand was Aubin & Wills (I didn't dream that did I?). Are you on Pin?
I am 5ft 10, size 12 and a classic dramatic - lots of bits on Pin but I need to get better with texture. Have you had your colours done?

Annianni · 29/01/2014 08:48

Welcome Maradesbois.

I had some leather shorts Umlauf 20 years ago
I loved wearing them with opaques, and bare legged in summer too.
Mine were lined, and I don't remember them being too hot. unlike all the sweaty pvc that I also wore

Annianni · 29/01/2014 09:10

Sleep... I'm not dieting, honest!
Diets don't work (for me)

But I have almost given up diet coke, having very little bread, but lots of eggs, porridge and home made veg soup for breakfast and lunches

Plus a normal meal in the evening.

And lots of manic exercise biking throughout the day.

Started on the 28th of December and i've lost 10 pounds so far

MarshaBrady · 29/01/2014 09:30

Well done Anni on the pounds and the food. Sounds nice.

Umlauf I like them, will suit you I think. Yep I'd keep the rest of the outfit pared back and simple.

My work wardrobe is utterly pitiful as in non-existant. Am cobbling together monochrome - pale skirt, Filippa K jumper or acne one and white shirt. Black wolford wool tights and black pettys or Lanvins.

I should buy something. A pencil skirt maybe. But by the time I get paid the last thing I want to spend it on is work stuff.

MarshaBrady · 29/01/2014 09:31

non-existent? Espresso up.

Stokey · 29/01/2014 10:31

Welcome Marade - great advice from Mig - I quite like wearing shirts with jeans to smarten them up a bit. Have got some nice patterned ones from Zara and Mango.

Umlauf says I'm a romantic too , or maybe Ingenue, but am definitely not a fan of long flowing skirts draped with multiple scarfs - think they just drown me.

Work wardrobe Marsha - dresses? I have a couple from Reiss and the DvF which are very easy to wear. I also wear skirts and shirts a lot, which can them be mixed with jeans or funkier jumpers at the weekend.

Stokey · 29/01/2014 10:35

Profits warning from Mulberry today - CEO being blamed for hiking prices since 2012. Guardian using Alexa bag as an example at £4,250.

May mean they bring prices down.

libertychick · 29/01/2014 10:36

Welcome marade. Well done Anni on the weight loss.

Loving the lists - it's a very hard question....

Three loves for me:
-Agnes B heart print shirt (with serious competition from the A&W silk print shirt that the lovely Shop gave me)
-CdC black military style coat

  • Naff Naff studded ankle boots (need a more upmarket version of these)

Three that don't work and not sure why:

  • Gorgeous colbalt blue select femme silk blouse I bought from Shop. I do wear it to work as the colour is great but it feels strange sometimes - possibly because it doesn't have a collar, whatever it is about my neck I seem to need a collar to look smart!!
  • Grey and neon yellow New Balance Trainers
  • Whistles grey Lena jacket - I wore this to death this time last spring but all of a sudden I feel like it doesn't work - no idea why. Possibly not 'waisted' enough.
libertychick · 29/01/2014 10:39

And prepare to yawn - this black skirt and this black skirt arrived yesterday. Both keepers. Considering the ponte one in the navy and white stripe too.
