DH says my skirt looks like I'm 'someone over 50 trying to looks young'

I'm 31 Confused is he right?

It's similar to that link (only no fancy cutting of material at the side like that one and mine's a tad shorter)and I'm wearing it with thick tights, flat boots and a v neck blue cashmere top. He's made me doubt myself now as I've had it in the back of the cupboard for a few years but haven't worn it very much at all and am having a bit of a wardrobe crisis in general (I feel too old for the yoof clothes but not old enough for my granny knits and struggle to know what style is mine anymore after losing alot of weight and things hang differently)

I should add. DH is by no means a fashion guru and his idea of having a coordinated outfit is to wear top to toe of exactly the same shade of green Hmm

Yes sorry he's right!

BunnyLebowski · 29/09/2013 09:24

He has a point.

Denim skirts = instant frumpdom.

Reastie · 29/09/2013 09:24

noisytoys · 29/09/2013 09:25

He's right Sad

littlemisswise · 29/09/2013 09:26

No, I don't think so. At least I hope not. I see loads of women wearing denim skirts with opaques and boots, and I wear that 'look' too. I'm 42. tell him to fuck off

Reastie · 29/09/2013 09:26

I already did death

Well, I'm off out in a min but coat will hide the skirt. Might go back to the back of my wardrobe....

It's not "too young" for you. I can kind of see what he means though.

It could be worn by someone wo was 50, trying to look your actual age, because that's what 30 year olds wore when they were 30.

Or something. Maybe.

It's not offensive but I think it's rare that a denim skirt looks flattering. It's the thickness and unyieldingness of the fabric. Does it sit nicely at the waist? Does it ride up at the waist when you walk and try to twist itself round? Maybe I've just had bad experiences with them.

Reastie · 29/09/2013 09:27

Maybe it depends on you you 'wear' it Hmm

Another one who agrees with your DH..... sorry. It would work with thick tights/leggings only if it's a mini IMHO. Get your scissors out! Problem solved.

You're welcome Smile

Reastie · 29/09/2013 09:29

Trills I think you've hit the nail on the head in a way. I have no idea on fashion anymore and I've fallen into the trap of wearing things I liked/were trendy when I was younger (having lost weight I'm now the same weight I was when I was a teenager so it's exciting to be able to pull off things a little better than I could). I need a style overhaul but can't afford one

My sister wears very short denim skirts and thick tights and looks fab (but then she's a slim 21 year old and can pull it off)

Reastie · 29/09/2013 09:30

good idea bestest

littlemisswise · 29/09/2013 09:32

Wear it Reastie, I bet you look fab and better than him!Wink

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 29/09/2013 09:37

Sorry,he's right. The only women I see wearing skirts like that are in the 45-55 bracket.

BestestBrownies · 29/09/2013 09:38

Congrats on your weight loss OP!!!

To find your style, just dedicate a day to 'shopping', possibly with a trusted friend. By that I mean you don't actually buy anything, just try on LOADS of things. Try on stuff you don't think you'll like (this is where the trusted friend comes in handy for picking up things you think look shit on the hanger). Take photos on your phone of the stuff you like/suits you and then find it cheap on ebay.

Simples.

Fairylea · 29/09/2013 09:38

I think it would work if it was shorter, like a longer mini if that's what yours is like..? Obviously with the dark tights.

At 31 you should still be shopping in the same shops as you did in your 20s! 31 is no age at all... look at Kelly brook, sienna miller, Miranda bloom - ok so they're stars but they're all early 30s. Can you see them agonising over wearing an outfit and wondering if they're too old for it? Nope. So stop it and wear what you like.

SundaySimmons · 29/09/2013 09:39

Me no like!

Trills · 29/09/2013 09:41

It's not horrible. Just a bit dull, really. I can't exactly claim that I never wear dull things on my bottom half. Yesterday my bottom half was wearing dark blue jeans and converse.

If you like it then it's not exactly the end of the world, the fashion police won't come and get you.

Trills · 29/09/2013 09:42

If you've lost weight and want to know what suits your shape try Dressipi - put in your measurements nad it will show you things that suit your shape. Then click "like" and "dislike" a lot, because not all of it will be to your taste!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2013 09:43

I'm wearing a denim mini and navy opaques today, and will probably wear boots when I go out (ankle boots). I think if you want to wear a longer denim skirt without it looking frumpy, it needs to be tight and midi-ish - I just got a fab dark denim tube skirt from Topshop and it looks good with navy opaques and heeled tan slouchy-ish ankle boots.

Personally I dislike denim skirts with black tights and/or black boots, because I think that look is a bit Eastern European prostitute.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/09/2013 09:45

Tell him to fuck off. If you like it, wear and everyone else can get to fuckery.

Kirrin · 29/09/2013 09:48

If its any consolation, my DP once told me my long skirt made me look like "Margaret from the village" he had a point

aStitchInTime · 29/09/2013 09:50

So I should ditch this denim skirt too? (Sorry for butting in on the thread!)

Am having a cleanout today.
