Jeans and over 50 women

I'm 45, I live in jeans, long sleeved t shirt and hoodie, in winter when not dressed up.

I can't conceive of suddenly stopping doing on my 50th birthday.

What do the older ones of you or your younger mums wear?

I realise I only see older women (to know their approx age) at church and WI where they are dressed up.

My mum is much older and has never worn jeans, DMIl was ten years older still and only wore trousers when riding.

What do 50-60 yearolds wear on an ordinary Saturday?

I am 49 and don't think anything of wearing my jeans still. most of my similar aged friends also wear them. My mum never wore jeans either but I think that was fairly common for that generation.

It does give my teen DD a problem when we both have animal hoodies on and skinny jeans, tucked into long boots as our winter uniform.

I'm 52. On an ordinary Saturday? Either jeans, walking trousers, or a wetsuit. Maybe a skirt or shorts in summer.

Why on earth would you stop wearing your normal clothes at 50?

My neighbour is 64.

She wears jeans, t shirts, hoodies, anything really and she looks fabulous.

You don't wake up on your 50th birthday and think "I'm an old hag - must get rid of my jeans".

My mum still wears jeans at 70 and looks great in them! But they're always smart jeans, she's very tall and slim and she is very well groomed (think 'ladies who lunch'). I on the other hand look like a sack in mine and am not remotely groomed so try not to wear them much...

I'm in the age group you mention and on Sats usually wear skinny jeans (good quality ones) and stripy top with ballerinas or loafers.

Can't imagine I'll ever stop wearing jeans. Why would I?

Often wear similar on Sunday - the women don't 'dress up' at the church I sometimes go to .

My mum is 60 and doesn't wear jeans but she never has. For some reason she hates them. But she wears cords and chino type trousers.

I'm very glad to hear this. I think I know too many 'respectable' older ladies with professional DHs or retired teachers themselves, who have had to look smart for the last 40 years and aren't going to change.

My neighbour (mentioned up thread), is a lawyer. She still works despite her remarkable 64 years (yawn) and is married to a local GP.

You can't get more respectable than that.

It's about feeling easy in your own skin at the end of the day.

She is very open minded, has friends of all ages from all walks of life and isn't still for a moment.

She was wearing a rather lovely and eye catching pair of loafers that she informs me came from The White Pepper.

Turns out this is a site for street cred type clothing for teens mainly.

They look truly fab on her.

My mum never used to wear jeans - she started just after her 60th birthday and I think she looks better in them TBH (she used to go for very uncomfortable-looking trousers that were never the right length for her).

maybe she sees plenty of 'older' women elsewhere but doesn't realise that they are >50!

Something should be done. Perhaps 'older ladies' should be encouraged to wear some sort of label - to render themselves more readily identifiable....

I live in rural middle of nowhereness. Yes I see older women walking round our local town/city, but it doesn't register how old they are, what they are wearing as it might if I sat on trains or buses.

WI, church etc I have time to ponder.

Startail Ok, I'll stop teasing as I now see where you're coming from.

I used to have a much younger friend, from a very rural corner of Europe, who was genuinely astonished to discover that, in urban England, women over 35 actually bought new clothes. In Selfridges and Harvey Nichols! And wore make up!

Trust me on this: the doormen at your favourite stores will not know the date of your 50th birthday. You will still be allowed to wear whatever you like.

Have never heard of anyone any age 'giving up jeans'.

You need to get out more OP :)

All my over 50 friends wear jeans and so do some of my over 80 friends!

It's more about what your bum looks like in them but that should be the case at 20, 50 or 80!

I'm always struck by how ageist some peeps are here.

Eg The comment 'she is still working at 64'

FGS! I have a good friend of that age who still has 1) a 21 yr old son living at home while he does his masters degree, and 2) she herself is doing a p/t masters this year to launch another career despite already having a PhD!

I do think- and am not being rude- that some younger people have a very limited view or experience of what older people do.

My DM lives in jeans and (usually) a heavy metal t-shirt - she is 67.
MiL is the same age and also wears jeans day to day - though she's a little more 'lady who lunches'

I'm 51. Wear jeans when they are clean(ish) and I still have my target size 10 jeans which I am actually quite hopeful of fitting into soon.
You don't change when you are 50. Can't quite believe I'm an adult yet.
I do threaten to run up and down the road naked when ds's refuse to do the dishwasher.
Age IS a state of mind not of dress

I am 50 in a couple of months and I have finally started wearing skinny jeans! I have found Next "relaxed skinny" which are really flattering on me with pumps or my converse and a stripey top or a wee cardigan.

Whilst I try to dress to flatter and hide my fat bits, frankly after years of fashion disasters (curse you "the 80's") I do not give a hoot what anyone thinks of what I wear.

I have just recruited someone on a career change to my team aged 64 and she is drop dead gorgeous ( and wears very tight skinny jeans on her days off)
