Jeans and over 50 women

I'm 45, I live in jeans, long sleeved t shirt and hoodie, in winter when not dressed up.

I can't conceive of suddenly stopping doing on my 50th birthday.

What do the older ones of you or your younger mums wear?

I realise I only see older women (to know their approx age) at church and WI where they are dressed up.

My mum is much older and has never worn jeans, DMIl was ten years older still and only wore trousers when riding.

What do 50-60 yearolds wear on an ordinary Saturday?

Grin I've never been discussion of the day under my normal name.

Once under a temporary nc, being serious, but never as my flippant self.

amazing, one day.
I know a wonderful mum if 5, who is now an elegant, lady who lunches with a beautiful house.

But she assures me she wasn't when she had her DCs at home and a buisness to run.

Lets be honest, these days, all generations are wearing similar clothes. I don't think it matters any more.

but only if we wear matching out fits, white headband scarves and gold loop earrings. Grin

I'm 51 and not only do I wear skinny jeans, I also go clubbing wearing satin shorts, crop tops, mini skirts etc etc. And honestly I look fab:) And I intend to dress like a 20 year old for as long as it makes me feel good.

TCN - most women do not look like you do at 51 though!! I'm 23 and don't look like that!

Thank you SAR Blush. It's funny but when I was in my 20s I always imagined that in my 50s I'd be dressed elegantly and pottering around in the garden - certainly not wearing hotpants and out clubbing till 4am regularly! How wrong was I. Now I'm thinking that perhaps in my 70s I'll be dressed elegantly and pottering around in the garden ... Time will tell I guess:)

Have a look at this for a near 70 year old rocking jeans. Now I realise that Lauren Hutton is not your average oap, but I really think jeans and a white shirt are a universal look good outfit.

50YearsofMaybe I wish there was a like button for your post!

I'm in my late 30s and have just begun to enjoy fashion/clothes etc (although I still loathe clothes shopping). Age is but a number.

I don't follow trends and never have but like picking pieces which I think look stylish...and I look a lot better than I did in my 20s

Don't think I'll ever rock the hotpants looks like catneuterer as I have an arse you could park a tea set on. Still like skinny jeans tho :)

lavenderhoney your comment about 'hair should be cut short after 40' reminded me. My Grandma always used to say that I should make the most of having long hair as you can't have long hair past 25!

I was once told on here by a 20 something that I shouldn't be wearing a mini-skirt at 37 Hmm

I like this Diana Athill quote:
"However old one is, one still feels inside like the person one used to be. It?s a foolish mistake to try too hard to look like that person, but it would be a bit sad to look very much like something else.?

I love Diana Athill, she lived her life the way she wanted. Good woman to take advice from.

my mum has always worn jeans more than I do, she's in her sixties. I think they really suit her and age doesn't come into it. It never occurred to me that anyone would consider not wearing them once they reach a certain age.

wear what you like, whatever you feel comfortable in! there's no rules.

50shadesofmaybe - hear hear! great post, concur entirely with what you're saying.

you can't have long hair past 25!

yet here I'm 38 with long hair.

not intending to cut it short ever again - had a crew cut when I was 21, dyed it steel blue (which was actually black with a hint of blue).

it looked great, but my hair grows really fast, had to touch up roots every 3 weeks!

Startail · 27/06/2013 23:18

My hair grows just past my shoulders and splits, so it's men just past my shoulders since I was 16 (and have up on a stupid short 80's style it wouldn't do) and I intend it staying just past my shoulders until I'm 100

amazingmum. Yes well I've still got very, very long hair. To be fair though my Grandma was born in about 1905, so that may well have been the convention when she was young, she just hadn't moved with the times.

Jeans should be age irrelevant

But I am getting a sense of what the OP means as another 45 year old... I prefer a grungy, scruffy informal look and it does concern me that as I get older I see fewer and fewer potential peers who feel similarly. My jeans are teemed with scruffy chunky boots most commonly. There seems to be a 'pressure' to get smarter and more groomed as you age (perhaps to compensate for being unforgivably wrinkly?) I'd rather not adopt the skinny jeans with ballet pumps / gold sandals look tbh

I am 49, have long hair and wear jeans all the time when I am not at work. Why not? Whose business is it?

There was a thread on here, mthenother week, where someone talked about frumpy women over 50 wearing polyester calf length skirts and plimsolls.... I have never ever worn anything like that in my life, so it nice to discover that none of us conform to their stereotype.

My mum is 54 this year and often wears jeans, she doesn't wear hoodies as I would think of them, but does wear zip-up thick knit cardigans quite often, This sort of thing

Never worn a calf length skirt (not good on short people!).
