Jeans and over 50 women

I'm 45, I live in jeans, long sleeved t shirt and hoodie, in winter when not dressed up.

I can't conceive of suddenly stopping doing on my 50th birthday.

What do the older ones of you or your younger mums wear?

I realise I only see older women (to know their approx age) at church and WI where they are dressed up.

My mum is much older and has never worn jeans, DMIl was ten years older still and only wore trousers when riding.

What do 50-60 yearolds wear on an ordinary Saturday?

My parents & PIL are in their early sixties. They all wear jeans but in different styles.

DM wears jeans, with sensible but trendy flats & lots of per una flouncy top, cardie, beads etc. on top. She's a retired teacher and she and all her friends still cling to the per una uniform Grin

I couldn't be arsed with the per una flouncy stuff myself but fashions aside it's been the sort of thing she's gravitated towards since her late 30s. Not sure why she'd suddenly change - nothing wrong with a well fitting pair of jeans.

IME the point at which decent jeans, good fit etc becomes really important is well in advance of 50. You can look fab at 50 or like a sack of spuds at 18 in jeans.

Good so I'm not alone in deciding to grow old disgracefully and keep my jeans.

I'm a short 16 so I look like a sack of spuds in loose jeans and a carrot in my favourite skinny ones and I don't care.

Just so long as I'm not suitably dressed for lunch in Waitrose café I'll be happy.

Never occurred to me that I should stop wearing jeans just 'cos I turned 50 Confused Am now 52 - but still don't see why I should stop Hmm

Have recently got back in to a pair of Size 12 bootleg jeans having lost over 2 stone. They're wearing out so I need to buy a new pair. Thinking of getting some skinnies , especially if I can continue my weight loss.

My mum is 62, and she wears jeans. She wears some that fits her figure and that aren't too young - and she combines it with tops that make her look very elegant and not too young. Same with shoes - she goes for classic shoes or boots in good quality. You'll only see her in trainers or sportswear, when she's out for a run.

I think her favourite pair of jeans are dark blue with straight legs. I think she has black ones too.

DM Link so ageism ahoy - but Lauren Hutton looks great

My dm stopped wearing trousers at 50 as she said older women looked awful in trousers:) she never owned a pair of jeans and always wore cords or trews, with loafers or sandals ( not sparkly!) she is in her 70's and has always been a slim size 8-10.

She is very old fashioned though with strange outdated ideas, such as long hair should be cut short after 40 and flowers in the hair is for teenagers, ditto any type of fashion handbag, trainers should only be worn at the gym or for sport, and lastly why don't I wear little heels to please my dh ( even though he is a work and I have small dc so impractical anyway)

If there were more like her, there would be no fashion industry, everyone would have bought everything they needed by the time they were 21, and could pop to m&s for essentials:)

Jeans are fine at any age, as long as you get the right fit and are comfy. Some people have it drummed into them that jeans cannot look smart and are on the same level with trackies. MY mum wears jeans and looks smart and well groomed.

Things that do bother me for older people i.e not a teenager, are IMVHO...Bunches (I have seen these on much older women- not a good look). Leggings with top that does not cover bum/ camel toe and full tracksuits (unless you are a p.e teacher or gym bunny.)

Oh Jings what a start to the day.... I'm over fifty, wear jeans but Asda specials today not 'quality', I wear my hair in (low) bunches frequently, and everyone's referring to me as an 'older woman'...

Don't worry, GleamingHeels - there are plenty of us on Mumsnet. One day, I hope, all the casual ageism that exists here will stop.

I know BIWI, I know... I just haven't yet got my head round being old enough to find ageism directed at me!

Anyway, back on topic, there's nothing wrong with Asda Skinnies for those of us without 'quality' budgets, aged or otherwise

I often see threads that start "I'm 25, am I too old for Converse" etc. To be honest I choke on my Horlicks.

It's difficult for some people to understand that the way you are inside (and out), doesn't change once you pass significant birthdays.

I have a friend who was 50 last year and goes on rather a lot about being old, even though I am older than her and anyway she looks great.

One of the problems she has is that she has three daughters in their 20s with whom she tries to keep up and lets face it, she can't.

She's a beautiful 50 year old, but she'll just get more and more unhappy if she strives to look like her daughter's sister, which she does for some reason.
She looks groovy in jeans too.

Maybe the very anonymity of "gathering points" like Munsnet will help some of the youngsters people to understand that we are all people and not defined by our age.

But I have my doubts - ironically because it is only with age that you come to realise that! Grin

I do think you go through a stage of wondering if you are too old to wear certain things, like short skirts - ironically at an age when you are not too old to wear them - then you get beyond that and realise that you can in fact wear anything you like.

My dear dad started wearing jeans in his 60's. He wore braces - under his shirt - to keep them up. He looked like Jim Royle only worse. My mum won't wear jeans, thinks they look daft on older women - so she wears tapered always a tiny bit too short trousers instead Hmm

It seems there's an "Am I too old for jeans/skinny jeans/long hair/short skirts/denim skirts/denim jackets/converse/shorts/dark lipstick/hoodies/etc/etc" thread every week on S&B.

Can we just say No to all these? It's what you like, are comfortable in, flatters you, and so on.

I'm over 40 and enjoy my clothes and wear what I like - and hope to do so for many more years!

Jeans can be fine on anyone provided the style chosen suits the wearer's figure.

I look awful in jeans of any kind so I won't be bothering unless I lose 2 stone but having said that my mum is probably 4 stone overweight but looks good in jeans (she is a petite apple shape so carries lots of weigh on top but has quite neat legs and bum). She is in her 60s and wears very dark blue ones with a bit of stretch, and then layers tops that cover her middle. Looks good. I am a big pear shape so all jeans just emphasise my tree trunk thighs and big bottom.

50Shades - I get tired of going on to those threads and repeating the same old mantra!

I find it bloody depressing that young women are so keen to dismiss older women.

my mum is 62. she wears jeans. she is not fashion conscious whatsoever, cheap stuff from charity shops.
she looks fine.

I can not imagine not wearing jeans ( I'm 38).
if I make it to 80 or 90 and can put them on I'll wear them.might need stretchy ones by thenGrin

Mil's over 70, never worn jeans, wears tracksuits for gardening but skirts only otherwise.

What a relief - I thought this thread would be full of people telling me I am too old to wear jeans.Ironically at the point when I had decided maybe I should dress a bit more "grown up" I looked older - and not in a good way! (probably due to poor taste in clothes and the desire to spend the money on something else rather than clothes!)

There was a thread a while back where the OP was critical of her Mum for attending playgroup in jeans - surely by her age, which I think was late forties, she should have moved on - maybe to some smart linen trousers and a little cardie? Grin
I have probably misrepresented a bit as it was a while ago but I remember opening the thread expecting this to be about an 80yearold (still perfectly entitled to wear jeans of course!) and being gobsmacked when it was referring to someone a few years younger than me...

Yes, my aim was definitely to get support for wearing jeans, hoddies, long boots, short boots and trainers.

I have no wish at all to turn into a lady who lunches in nicely cut trousers and blazer or cardigan with embellishments.
