Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Excellent! Thanks a million Cointreau, I'm really looking forward to it :)

pocketandsweet · 30/07/2013 11:39

onelittlelady. The fbs of Y, Korres and the gorse sample are finally on their way to you. I hope you like them.

wiltingfast · 30/07/2013 22:32

O god, my Tauer discovery set arrived today and I don't quite know what to make of it! I got:-

Carillon pur un ange
Rose chypree
Noontide petals
Vetiver Dance
Reverie au jardin and
L'air du desert marocain

Carillon is crazy stuff, cannot BEAR it. Rose? Rose? ROSE you say? Oh and lilac? With some lily and leather? Well it's vile. I'm sorry. It's like a weird air freshner over something medicinal and a relentless CLEAN note under it all just to up the headache stakes a bit.

Sometimes I get a whiff of lily. Just a whiff.

In most of them I am getting a strange background smell that actually makes my tongue tingle. All weirdly clean. I thought he was supposed to be an orientalist at heart? I thought these might be too sweet for me but they are possibly too industrial.

Now I haven't tried the Lddm yet. My nose is spent for tonight... Am also a wee bit poorly (recovering from nasty nasty gallstone attack) so am possibly bu.

So aibu? Come tell me what I am missing! ;)

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2013 00:13

I have a love-hate thing with Tauer. I adore LADDM, and also like Vetiver Dance and Rose Chypree, but found Reverie au Jardin and Orange Star utterly choking.

SOTD was SL Un Bois Vanille; not the obvious summer choice, but it wasn't exactly summery today.

Fuckitthatlldo · 31/07/2013 12:04

I absolutely adore L'air du desert Marocain. If I had to re-locate to Mars and could only choose one perfume to take with me, it would be that one. I was in rapture the first time I smelt it. It was the perfume I had been waiting for all my life. Tauer is an indisputable talent - no doubt about that.

I also really enjoy his Incense Rose. The rose is really radiant and beautiful over the smoky incense.

But I don't like them all, not by a long shot. His Pentachord Auburn was just plain nasty IMHO, and the Incense Extreme didn't do a huge amount for me either.

I'd be curious to try Lonestar Memories on skin. I smelt it on a paper strip in Les Senteurs once, and found it... interesting. Loads of birch tar. Very challenging.

I ordered a full bottle of Mona di Orio's Vanille. Couldn't wait. My friend is picking it up from the sorting office today for me. Am so excited and happy to have it as part of my collection. The bottle is really gorgeous too. I try not to be swayed by packaging but...

SOTD: Coromandel. Very beautiful it is too.

ToysRLuv · 31/07/2013 13:11

So, it turns out I've got rosacea. Angry I thought I left shite skin behind in my 20s.

I got a gift card to a Boots type chain here, so bought Opium Vapeurs from the rather limited selection. I am happy, though. It's very nice. Incensey, but fresh.

wiltingfast · 31/07/2013 13:27

Aw crap Toys that is the pits :( they thought I had that at one point and put me on some drugs for it but no, seems I just have v red cheeks! Hope they can manage it for you.

I'm toying with a purchase of Le Temps d'une fete myself, especially as word is it is possibly being discontinued. It's only ?35 online....

Couldn't face more Tauer adventures this morning so am wearing peaceful calming 28 La Pausa...

ToysRLuv · 31/07/2013 13:45

I've "fortunately" got the pimply type, it seems, so it can be treated with antibiotics. They are going to wait for autumn to give me any, though, as they make your skin sensitive to the sun, so you could end up going from the frying pan into the fire..

I love LADDM (dry down) and like Maroc, Une Rose Vermeille and (on some days when I am feeling adventurous) Lonestar. Hate pretty much everything else by Tauer. And I sooo wanted to love Incense Rose, but I HATE it. Ditto Incense Extreme. I had to scrub Auburn off after half an hour of trying to get into it and feeling increasingly nauseous. Pentachord White is a bit better, but still unwearable.

wiltingfast · 31/07/2013 14:13

ok, inspired by fuckit have ordered a sample of Mona di Orios vanilla from that parfumeries des fontaines website! Can only be better than the carillon nightmare I endured yesterday!!

?9 for a sample? Am a bit worried what a fb might cost!!

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2013 21:57

Ooh, I forgot Lonestar Memories. Weird, but utterly wonderful, although I always wonder whether those around me are enjoying the scent as much as I am.Grin

SOTD was Guerlain Apres L'Ondee. My favourite Guerlain.

OneLittleLady · 31/07/2013 22:01

Just seen your post pocket thank you Thanks I shall wait excitedly for the postman Grin

wiltingfast · 31/07/2013 22:57

Am actually relieved to see Tauer is a bit divisive, really wanted to like them but couldn't even look at the box this morning Blush think I'll put them away for awhile once I"ve tried laddm. Happy to pass them around if anyone fancies them? Let me know.

And oooooo, mystery samples arrived today! Had to try no 3 first since cointreau seemed so enamoured!

Mmm, def v pleasant Grin from bottle get vanilla maybe? Warm scent with a light sparkle to me. On skin gosh, v light, much lighter than I expected ok dabbed on some more, still seems v light and floaty, fresh too, but a hint of warmth. Not the faintest idea what it is... Reminds me of issey perfumes fwiw!

ToysRLuv · 01/08/2013 00:52

Wilting: Since you're the last one (and I reckon you can keep the samples, as well- have got other deals with Fuzzy and Cointreau to make it fair), I can reveal here what number 3 is: Comptoir Sud Pacifique-Coco Figue. It's light, creamy and figgy. I quite like it, especially in hot weather..

CointreauVersial · 01/08/2013 12:58

In honour of the Tauer chat (and because I'm wearing green today), SOTD is Vetiver Dance.

I always get a gingerbread note from vetiver, and find it very moreish.

CVSFootPowder · 01/08/2013 15:50

I've been complaining about being unable to find a summer fragrance that I adore.
Well - right under my nose - and has been since 1974 - I've found it.
Chanel Cristalle.
Purchased the EDP today and can't stop sniffing myself. Love it.

I love LADDM and am enjoying reading the Tauer chat.

OneLittleLady · 01/08/2013 16:02

Thank you pocket my package arrived this morning Thanks

My, Y is a foxy one isn't she? I had one tiny squirt this morning and I can still smell it

wiltingfast · 01/08/2013 21:46

Oh Cristalle IS gorgeous! Enjoy :)

Now you've told us what it is I can't believe I didn't identify the coconut!

Ok no 2 tonight, hmmm, v ladylike this one, think I get some citrus, am going cautiously say maybe lime? Mmm I really like this one, and there's a bit of depth to it too, not sure what though. I think some light fruit too, maybe apple?

Lovely! Tell us what it is Toys please!

wiltingfast · 01/08/2013 22:13

Btw anyone tried carthusia Via Camarelle? There's a fb on my local second hand website for ?25... Notes look good to me on fragrantica.

No 2 is gone v sweet now, a bit like apple drops on me.

ToysRLuv · 02/08/2013 07:44

Wilting: Number 2 is The Body Shop Tobacco Flower. No idea what the notes are, but would guess magnolia, tobacco and caramel? your guess is as good as mine! The best thing to ever come from th Body shop and therefore discontinued Confused I've got two bottles to keep me going..

SOTD: Opium Vapeurs, again. It's very nice. Lovely in fact. Just right and nothing like Opium, which to me is a bit stuffy and old-fashioned.

ToysRLuv · 02/08/2013 07:45

Wilting: You're probably right about some fruit in it, as well.. Who knows!

pocketandsweet · 02/08/2013 09:07

Haven't been around much as I've been to busy getting my head around moving... This morning I put on Mure et Musc Extreme from my L'A P sample set ( which I have been trying to use up because those adorable but ridiculous sample bottles won't survive a transatlantic shipping container). I had previously completely written it off as not me at all and now I surprised to find I keep sniffing at it with increasing affection.

Fuckitthatlldo · 02/08/2013 21:10

Ok, so I feel I am about to commit perfume heresy here...

But Fracas? Really?

I ordered a sample, despite knowing from the notes that it wouldn't really be my kind of thing, (am not into floral perfumes as a rule, particularly not white florals.) But I wanted to smell it because, you know, it's a classic, and everyone goes on about how good it is, and sometimes it's good to get out of your comfort zone and so on and so on. Maybe this would be a floral I could learn to love...

...And well. I have never smelled anything so deeply disgusting in my life. Ugh! It's revolting! It smells as though someone has taken the kind of esters you find in pear drops, and mixed them carefully into a little bottle of nail varnish. It actually makes me feel nauseous and as though I'm on the brink of developing a migraine. An out and out scrubber IMHO.

I don't get it. Really really don't get it. Someone please come and tell me how wrong I am.

On a slightly more pleasant note, La Fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens is a very pleasing rose scent - real and round and jammy, with a little something spicy and peppery underneath. I like it a lot. Full bottle worthy I'd say, particularly if you love rose.

Wazamba by Parfums d'empire is very interesting. Captures the scent of a fragrant pine forest with absolute precision, then slowly morphs from pine needles to burning incense as time goes on. Very clever perfume, but not sure if I'd actually want to wear it.

Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle is also full of roses, with some... er... other stuff too. Very pleasant and clearly of a high quality, but just not for me. I find it a little dull honestly. Much prefer La Fille de Berlin. La Fille de Berlin knows who she is.

Fuckitthatlldo · 02/08/2013 21:25

Ooh Wilting, I hope you enjoy your sample of Vanille Smile

Definitely give it more than one wearing. The first time I put it on, I found the initial blast of petitgrain and booze in the top notes a little much. It took me a few goes to really appreciate the whole delicious journey.

I'm now thrilled with my full bottle. It was expensive, it's true, but worth it I think.

I've asked for a full bottle of Muscs Koublai Khan for my birthday. Gotta love a bit of skank with your musk!

CointreauVersial · 02/08/2013 21:32

Fuckit - I tried Fracas for exactly the same reasons as you did, and I loathed it too. And the smell got everywhere.

SOTD was Still Life by Olfactive Studios. Gorgeous sharp citrus with galbanum and rum Confused to follow. Really lovely.

Fuckitthatlldo · 02/08/2013 22:19

So it's not just me Cointreau. That's a relief. Was beginning to think everyone else was smelling something I wasn't. Apparently Madonna, Uma Thurman, and Courtney Love all list it as among their favourite fragrances. All I can say is ??????

Saw Un Bois Vanille was your SOTD the other day. Have just received a sample of that to try. I'm really looking forward to it. Have you bought a full bottle? What do you think of it?
