I hope this is still acceptable!

Dresses are so, so short everywhere!

Leggings mean I don't have to fake tan Blush and keep me warm!

Will you be wearing leggings this summer?

freedom love it! That's exactly what I was going to say!

FreedomOfTheTess · 25/05/2013 14:17

abuhamzamouse - thanks.

Rather be offended, I've just laughed at the posters who have expressed "horror" and "disgust" at wearing leggings under dresses, or at leggings in general.

If people can get that worked up about clothes then I pity them.

I reserve my horror and disgust at things worth getting worked up over.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2013 14:39

Cba to read the thread but no, no and thrice no.

MollyBee · 25/05/2013 14:57

Am I the only person in the world not to own a pair of leggings? I really don't get them, it's like going outside in your tights.

feralgirl · 25/05/2013 15:05

Always wear leggings under shorter dresses mainly as my legs are vile. I wasn't aware it was a problem. I don't care if it's dated, it suits my slightly grungey style and I like it.

MiaSparrow · 25/05/2013 15:12

I thought this thread meant FOR TODDLERS.

Um, no.

ThenWeTakeBerlin · 25/05/2013 15:13

I wear jeggings under dresses, what do S&Bers have to say about that?

I'll continue wearing them whatever.

Startail · 25/05/2013 15:24

DD2(15) is doing today. Although she hasn't much option the dress is too summers old and she's grown.

SingingSilver · 25/05/2013 15:32

I appear to be inheriting my mothers varicose veins, and I also have an ongoing problem with the dry skin on my knees, so leggings it must be. Not for me, for the viewing comfort of the public.

ToastedTeacakes · 25/05/2013 15:38

It isn't always about shyness or hiding supposed flaws either.

Some people might prefer to wear them for discretion, esp those with small kids, etc. Not everyone wishes to bare their legs right up to mid thigh just because the sun shines, in the same way you might not particularly wish to bare arms. British weather most often demands some sort of quick cover up option (if i go out in a sleeveless dress you can guarantee in a few hours that cardi will be needed to fight a passing rain squall or nippy breeze).

I don't own a pair of leggings, nor do I have children, but I like them (both :) )

ToastedTeacakes · 25/05/2013 15:42

And to be honest, I generally tend to think they look nice on most figures. I am a fan of fashion, but don't particularly follow it and certainly never judge other people's choices. I have my own preferences, and leggings don't suit my style, but I do occasionally wonder about buying some when I see other people looking good in them.

Basically, they are a great option for when you don't want to wear pants, wish to show your legs off to some extent, but not entirely bare. It's simple really, they're pretty inoffensive.

FreedomOfTheTess · 25/05/2013 15:46

Toasted - excellent points.

I have very long legs - it comes with the height (!) - and while they're nice legs (when I'm not pregnant), I'm not someone who is confident in showing my bare legs off.

I cannot stand wearing tights (but I do if the situation is appropriate), leggings offer a compromise for me, as I can show the nice shape/tone of my legs without exposing the flesh.

freerangeeggs · 25/05/2013 16:09

I can understand why people might want to wear them but I think it looks a bit cheap and dated. It's worth finding an alternative.

Maxi dresses/skirts and everywhere just now and some of them are lovely. Lots of light jersey trousers in Topshop etc. Or leggings with a long top, which looks fine and is probably more comfortable (cooler) anyway.

TheHumancatapult · 25/05/2013 16:12

Yes but as in a wheelchair I have to wear something as very hard sit ladylike

FreedomOfTheTess · 25/05/2013 16:14

Freerangeeggs - finding maxi dresses when you're 6ft 4 is a struggle, and most shorter dresses look like tunics on me anyway!

Although having said that, like I said before, I don't give two hoots what other people thiink. I just care about whether I'm comfortable.

TAMMY2712 · 25/05/2013 17:01

Despite having crap looking legs, if going to wear any dresses this summer it'll be a maxi-dress. Don't think i would wear leggings

AmberNectarine · 25/05/2013 17:11

I do not, I have one Malene Birger tunic dress which would be indecent worn bottomless (sometimes throw it over a bikini on hols) but I wear skinnies under it. I very occasionally wear leggings with a long vest for lounging but I find that they make me feel frumpy.

For the record I have seriously awful legs, so I just don't get them out. Dresses are knee length or maxi, but mostly I wear cropped skinnies.

Laquila · 25/05/2013 17:19

www.thewhitecompany.com/clothing/dresses-and-tunics/

I would wear pretty much any of these with dark grey, navy or black ankle length leggings and sandals in summer, if it wan't warm enough for bare legs. I would never wear them with nude tighta in the summer. I'd also happily wear them with a cardy and long boots or suede ankle boots in the autumn/winter. Am I a disappointment to you all?!

Nehru · 25/05/2013 17:35

no no no its the ugliest thing ever

Just wear some trousers ffs

MiniPenguinMaker · 25/05/2013 17:50

Ooh yes, I certainly will be.

Apparently being pregnant (third trimester, baby!) is a good "excuse" for this shocking legging and dress wearing. But I don't need an excuse. I think this is such a cute look anyway, with the right dress and the right leggings. I go for boring black and ballet flats, but I see lots of more thrilling colour combos worn by bright young things in London at the moment so I guess there are better sources of colourful leggings in our fair capital.

Plus, it's bloomin' freezing in this country at the moment.

Mumsyblouse · 25/05/2013 19:16

Lots of the girls at uni are wearing this look, or longer jeggings, I think it looks nice, I don't wear it as it's too young for me!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 25/05/2013 20:28

I wear dresses with leggings as my legs look like uncooked chicken. And with fake tan they look like uncooked chicken that's been fake tanned.

It's warm, comfy and you can take them off if you get really hot. Or brave, in my case.

AND I wear maxi dresses when it gets really hot. Grin

showerhead · 25/05/2013 20:38

feralgirl me too! wear your leggings with attitude! Most dresses (not all- but most) can look great with leggings if they are worn with attitude. I have a slightly grungy style and will be rocking a summer dress over leggings, with a belt and a cardi to top it all off- removing such items as weather demands. I do care what i look like but comfort very important too, and i really couldn't care less what anyone else thinks!

Boomba · 25/05/2013 20:39

sometimes, I wear jeans under a dress!! Shock

AmazingDisgrace · 25/05/2013 21:04

I will be. My legs are blue white and I'd cause multiple pile ups with the sun reflecting off them otherwiseWink
