Have you used the Brazilian Hair Straightening / Blow-Dry Home Keratin Treatment from Amazon?

I have read lots of threads about this kit and people seem to rave about it to reduce the frizziness in hair but I remember reading a while back that some contain formaldehyde and I concerned that this one contains it. I have read the ingredients but am unsure if formaldehyde goes by other chemical names?
Just worried I'll do damage to myself for the sake of frizz free hair.
Any ideas?

god so do i! its the 3 days im worried about. I've never been able to go three days without washing it. but in the grand scheme...

oreoaddict · 12/06/2013 22:40

Yeah I guess. Do you normally use dry shampoo?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 12:19

im done... my conclusion...

clarifying shampoo smells lovely and cleans your hair very well. squeaky clean. but dry and difficult to comb after due to lack of conditioner i guess.

after initial drying hair was very dry

keratin was very easy to apply and a little goes a long way.

the clips in the box are very good and secure.

wasn't particularly difficult to dry afterwards either. maybe i didn't put enough on but by the time id finished applying to last section the ones i did in the beginning were drying by themselves.

after drying, hair was smoother but still 'big'.

after straightening, very smooth and shiny. doesn't look greasy at all but definitely feels like there's something on it.

i also didn't have any gloves in my box so i did it with bare hands. hands feel soft. i got it on my scalp and my face and no irritation. stuff smells like banana.

took about and hour and a half start to finish with just below shoulder length hair. but i am skilled in doing the back. not too potent when straightening either.

now for the difficult bit waiting til Sunday...

any questions? Grin

Coconuts thanks for the summary!

My hairdresser told me that it's perfectly fine to use dry shampoo if you need to by day three. I did that last time with no noticeable problems.

I am definitely going to get the kit based on this thread. Thanks, ladies.

Wenchelda · 13/06/2013 14:12

I normally wash my hair 2-3 times a week, no noticed any difference in greasiness or otherwise since having the keratin on (though I only washed it out on tues so maybe too early to tell)

My hair definitely wasn't flat during the 3 days - despite having to straighten it so much initially and a couple of extra times I get rid of kinks. It actually looked really good the whole time - in fact, I lasted 4 days before washing and I could probably have even gone one more!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 14:13

ill need to dry shampoo it by Saturday as its starting to feel a bit heavy already. i just have naturally oily hair tho.

Pinkflipflop · 13/06/2013 14:18

How are people managing to shower/wash face etc without tying hair back?

Also, I got my hair coloured/ lowlights yesterday, how long do I need to wait?

Great summary coco

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 14:24

you can apply on top of colour but be warned i was just comin on to say it has certainly lightened my hair by a couple of shades. it was a deep chocolate applied about three weeks ago and it definitely looks a lot lighter today. you have to wait two weeks after doing the keratin before you can re colour.

im about to go out in the wind to do school run so bound to come back with some kinks in. ghds are going to be on overload this weekend Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 14:24

shower cap, pink?

Pinkflipflop · 13/06/2013 14:27

I wonder would it turn highlights a yellowy colour?

Never thought of shower cap! I was panicking that you absolutely can't get any kinks in the hair, but you say you can just ghd it if you do?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 14:31

yes if it gets wet or kinked re dry and re straighten.

ill be using a shower cap as i have a fringe so need to jeep it off my face for washing.

not sure if it would yellow them as im brunette. how often do you have a colour? can you stagger it between your next colour?

oreoaddict · 13/06/2013 16:05

Cheers coconuts! Sounds like so far, you're impressed. I think I'd be like you with feeling like I need to wash it sooner rather than later. I have naturally oily hair too, but then thinking about it, it could just be because my girlfriend won't stop touching it!Grin She's been away for a few days and my hair feels much less greasy. I might have to mention it Hmm

My hair is really long and thick. Do you think it might be a better idea to get some help? The only problem is, I don't really know anyone who is hair savvy, so it might be a bit risky. Tempted to get it done professionally, but then because I have so much hair, the price tag is going to be pretty hefty. Just don't know.

How do you know how much to apply though? They say don't saturate, but surely if you're covering your hair with the treatment, it's going to feel pretty saturated.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 16:18

if you're local to me i would do it. i don't know how you know but you instinctively know how much to put on. you can feel if its dry and doesn't have enough on. i too had the same worries but the brush makes it really easy to apply. you only need to dip the end of the brush in a tiny bit and spread it down. then smooth it between your fingers and you can feel if it needs any more.

if you section it well enough its really easy Smile

oreoaddict · 13/06/2013 16:37

coconuts that would be brilliant if you were! Smile I bet you're not though, I live in Nottinghamshire. I haven't spoken to many nottinghamshireites on here Grin

The idea of washing it just with shampoo and no conditioner, makes sense obviously, but my hair is inevitably going to look like a birds nest. I'll try to look forward to the end result at this stage Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 16:57

you can't tell i haven't used conditioner because the treatment is so nourishing that's acted like the conditioner. so its like I've shampood and conditioned but dried it inbetween if that makes sense. its softer than ever now.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 16:58

im lincolnshire so not overly far but too far for this Grin

oreoaddict · 13/06/2013 17:01

damn [pouting smiley]

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 17:18

oh and another point:

if you can't find the gloves in the box, like me, look on the back of the instructions Grin

honestly oreo just go for it Smile

oreoaddict · 13/06/2013 18:09

Thanks for the tip coconuts. I think I just might Smile I rang round a few local hairdressers today, just to enquire about prices etc and one place said "Brazilian blow dry? Well our blow dry is better than a Brazilian" Hmm Thought it might be cheaper locally, but I'm starting to think it's all or nothing, as in, I either do it myself, or I go to a top salon and pay about £200! It's starting to sound like a no brainer.

God I wish I was friends with a hairdresser!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 18:21

honestly it isn't difficult Smile

oreoaddict · 13/06/2013 20:40

hmmm I guess I should just give it a go.

I know I keep going on and on, but isn't it really hard to keep it away from your scalp? Did you really not find the fumes too harsh?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 21:49

no honestly. it doesn't seem chemically. its just like a big pot of conditioner. less offensive than hair dye.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/06/2013 22:04

and re the scalp... if you hold the section you're painting perpendicular to your head it's easier to avoid the scalp. but i definitely got it on my scalp when i combed it through and im not bald yet Grin

oreoaddict · 14/06/2013 08:55

coconuts, update?.......

Hopasholic · 14/06/2013 09:29

Right! Today's the day! I'm having it coloured in 3 weeks so want to give it chance before I have it done.

My hair is boob length, naturally curly/frizzy and i don't really suit the flat as a pancake look so I'll report back (in 3 hours time I guess!)

Off for a shower to shampoo with the clarifying lotion.
