Have you used the Brazilian Hair Straightening / Blow-Dry Home Keratin Treatment from Amazon?

I have read lots of threads about this kit and people seem to rave about it to reduce the frizziness in hair but I remember reading a while back that some contain formaldehyde and I concerned that this one contains it. I have read the ingredients but am unsure if formaldehyde goes by other chemical names?
Just worried I'll do damage to myself for the sake of frizz free hair.
Any ideas?

I'm gonna purchase it today! Scared to use it tho!

Hopasholic · 06/06/2013 22:35

Well mine's come today! Quick question. I have very frizzy curly hair. I look like a mixture of Anita Dobson & Brian May if I leave it untamed. Sad
Sometimes I use GHD's to straighten it but more recently I tend to use my Babliss big hair.
So question is....... Will I still be able to style it curly with the babyliss?

Purpleknickers · 07/06/2013 01:30

Yes you will but you must leave it the full 72 hours before you wash it. It's not a straightening produce its a smoothing product. 2 weeks in mine is still soft and shiny but if I wash it the waves comes back just not all frizzy and coarse.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 07/06/2013 12:21

mine is taking ages to come. Angry

Pinkflipflop · 07/06/2013 12:28

I would love to see a before and after picture!

Wenchelda · 07/06/2013 12:54

I'm doing mine today .... Eeek! Not looking forward to all the faff but definitely excited about lovely shiny smooth hair by Monday :-)

redhappy · 07/06/2013 14:15

Doing mine tonight. Well, my friend who is hairdresser us doing it for me. Minot using the same kit as everyone else, I found someone selling single use quantity bottles of professional kit so we're using that. Found a brand called innoar, it says you can wash after 24hrs, but I'm going to wait three days. Will take pics and post later! I have got LOTS of shiny stuff in my hair at the moment so the before pic will look better than it normally does!!

Wenchelda · 07/06/2013 20:59

Right I've done mine :-) My hair is just below shoulder length and is fairly fine, but there's a lot of it (if that makes sense?!) It took just under 2hrs from start to finish, so not too bad. It was a bit awkward trying to apply the keratin at the back, so I can see why it would be easier having someone to help, but it was manageable and I figured as it has to be combed through after applying, I didn't have to be too accurate with "painting" it on! I used about 2 thirds of the jar, but think I could've done it with less, I was just a bit paranoid about not doing it right so probably used more than was necessary. It looks great at the mo, but then usually does when it's freshly washed and straightened. The real test will be on Monday when I can wash it ... Despite everyone's reviews, I still can't quite believe that it's going to be this lovely and soft/smooth/swishy with little or no straightening involved. If it is, I will be seriously impressed!

FrantasticO · 07/06/2013 22:20

Mines is here but I have no one to help this weekend Sad

Don't think I'd manage the back on my own though I'm very tempted to bung it on anyhow

How easy or hard to do on your own is it?

Wenchelda · 08/06/2013 07:00

It was a bit awkward frantastic but not too bad. I did mine in small sections and did it partly by feel and party by using an extra mirror to help look in the mirror behind me. To be honest I just slapped it on wherever my hand landed and hoped for the best ... You have to comb through each section after applying the keratin anyway so I figured any bits I'd missed would get done when it was combed. It seems to have worked fine (though I'm not due to wash it out until Monday so maybe I won't be able to tell properly until then)

Pinkflipflop · 08/06/2013 08:46

What happens if you accidentally get some of it on your scalp whilst combing through?

I have this sitting on my bookcase and I keep eyeing it up but am worried in case my scalp burns! Shock

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 08/06/2013 14:34

did any of you do the patch test or did you just get on with it?

mine has just arrived... but need to do it when i haven't got the kids... Thursday. if i so it Thursday then i can wash Sun night so im all glamorous and swishy for mondays school run Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 08/06/2013 14:38

pink, re the scalp, i don't know is it that potent? surely the roots need doing?

also another question, after you'd all applied the stuff to a section did you leave that section hanging on your back or did you put it in a clip while you did the next section?

its going to be impossible for me to keep it off my skin because i have a fringe so i guess the scalp isn't a problem.

Wenchelda · 08/06/2013 18:00

I didn't do a patch test - I regularly dyed hair so figured I'd probably be ok. I also wasn't that careful about avoiding my scalp and anywhere it did touch my skin, it didn't burn. It really really stinks though - not a horrible smell, just wry sickly sweet but it did make my eyes water quite a lot, despite being in bedroom with all the upstairs windows open.

When applying the keratin, I just left each section hanging as I did it, then blow dried the whole lot when my entire head was done.

Wenchelda · 08/06/2013 18:01
  • very sickly sweet, not wry sickly sweet. Stupid phone.
ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 09/06/2013 20:27

I've dyed mine loads to so ill just get stuck in.

i was worried about it staining if i left it hanging but since seeing the colour of it im not so worried about that now.

i watched a couple of you tube videos and they contradicted each other as to how much to apply to each section. how much have you all used? has the hair felt dry/damp/wet after application before drying?

Wenchelda · 10/06/2013 07:44

My hair was very wet after applying the keratin - more or less the same wetness as if I'd just washed it. I think I probably used more keratin than I needed to (about 2 thirds of the pot on my just-below-the-shoulder hair) but I was paranoid about it not working!

oreoaddict · 10/06/2013 12:39

Oh I'm getting really confused with this now! Confused

If it's just smoothing treatment, then why is it advertised as a straightening product?

oreoaddict · 12/06/2013 09:08

Any updates?

iloveweetos · 12/06/2013 16:08

So i bought this and too scared to use it haha!

Ive read up thread that the hair isnt overly greasy in the 3 days but can i really go to work like it!!! lol

oreoaddict · 12/06/2013 16:50

weetos(another chocolate addict Grin) this is actually what's putting me off the most. That and the chemicals. The idea of not really being able to touch my hair for 3 days and having it poker straight and flat to my head for that long fills me with horror! I know it's only for 3 days and in the long run it's probably worth it, but nevertheless, not liking that idea.

Oh and I've been watching a few more youtube clips, reviews etc and one thing that kept coming up on the cons, was that in general, it made your hair greasier. I would have thought because it's such an intense conditioning treatment, which essentially is in your hair permanently. Has anyone else found this? My hair needs washing every 3 days and that's with a dry shampoo top up on day 2.

Wenchelda · 12/06/2013 19:31

Mine was totally fine in the 3 days - in fact I actually left it in 4 days altogether.. Was due to wash it Monday night but was going swimming Tuesday so didn't see the point. Waited until after swimming then washed it. During the 3 (4) days if say it actually looked better than it normally does. Not greasy at all (only very slightly by day 4), was lovely and smooth/straight but not flat. When I did finally wash it, I just left it to air dry - it still went a bit "fluffy" but nowhere near as frizzy & "big" as if I'd left it to air dry pre-keratin. Feels very soft and I imagine will only take a few mins with th straighteners, though I haven't felt the need to use at all yet :-)

oreoaddict · 12/06/2013 19:51

wench how often do you normally have to wash your hair? Did you do it yourself? Was it really not flat? I can't imagine how it wouldn't be if you flat iron each section 7 times at least!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 12/06/2013 21:54

oreo i am doing mine tomorrow. i have naturally quite oily hair and have to wash every other day at least so ill keep you posted how it goes.

oreoaddict · 12/06/2013 22:25

Cheers coconuts. Hope it goes well!
