Have you used the Brazilian Hair Straightening / Blow-Dry Home Keratin Treatment from Amazon?

I have read lots of threads about this kit and people seem to rave about it to reduce the frizziness in hair but I remember reading a while back that some contain formaldehyde and I concerned that this one contains it. I have read the ingredients but am unsure if formaldehyde goes by other chemical names?
Just worried I'll do damage to myself for the sake of frizz free hair.
Any ideas?

Did mine today too, and did the blow dry outside thing! Great minds and all that Wink
I couldn't be faffed with putting the stuff on with the brush so I just whacked it on with my hands and rubbed it in and then combed it through. My hair smells and feels lovely but I do resemble an Afgahn hound Grin

Grin Grin It's a good look!

Reporting some bad news though I'm afraid. I mentioned before that my hair feels a little greasier than before I did the treatment. However, it's even worse now! I washed it for the second time on Monday and my hair today literally looks like someone has poured a generous amount of chip pan fat on my head Confused Not a good look, I'm sure you'll agree.

Not sure if it's just the treatment or the shampoo and conditioner........or both. Does anyone else use the keratin kits one? I know one or two of you do.

Also, even though my hair looks in much better condition overall, I find it breaks off easier. I remember a hairdresser telling me years ago that too much keratin based products can have the opposite of the desired effect and make your hair more brittle. I'm used to bits breaking off as I've got a really bad habit of touching my hair, but this last week or so, I've noticed that quite a lot of my hair breaks when I pull it. I'm only pulling very gently and it's only the unhealthy, split ends which are snapping off, but nevertheless, it's a little unnerving.

Anyone else had this?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 10/07/2013 17:10

oreo, have you tried using no or hardly any conditioner? the conditioner might be too heavy.

and re the breakage; it sounds like you need a good cut. if you have split ends anyway they will become brittle over time. do you have a regular hair cut?

oreoaddict · 10/07/2013 18:27

coco, I definitely do need a good cut, but I'm soooo desperate to grow it really long. I'm being greedy really, cos it's already half way down my back! Grin I'll get a trim soon though.

I actually used less conditioner this time, as in a couple of pea sized blobs. I did use more shampoo this time though and that's it's quite conditioning isn't it?.... I just didn't feel like I got it clean, so I added lots.

You don't use the keratin kits one do you?....

oreoaddict · 10/07/2013 18:28

Oooops, typo! *that is quite conditioning

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 10/07/2013 19:57

no i use tresseme. you need a cut asap Grin

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 11/07/2013 13:53

Right. My 72 hrs s up at 3pm tomorrow but I'm going to wash tonight in an attempt to keep more volume as I don't want it to be flat or straight, just easy and non frizzy. Anyone else done this?

SofaCanary · 11/07/2013 14:32

Oreo I used the keratin kit shampoo and conditioner twice and chucked 'em in the bin! My hair felt strangely course and wooly when wet but then oily and coated when I'd dried it, bloomin' gross.

I switched to L'Oreal Everpure and Pureology, I think you can have too much of a good thing with this keratin malarkey.

oreoaddict · 11/07/2013 15:39

Sofa, thanks for the tip. The first time I used the keratin kit ones, my hair felt really clean and probably lasted as long as when I used the normal shampoo etc. This time though, yeah, my hair felt oily and coated, just the same! So how are you getting on with this L'Oreal one then? Does your hair feel as clean as it did before your treatment? Do you know if it's definitely salt free, because apparently a lot of the brands which say they're salt free, do actually contain some salt. I agree with what you say about keratin. Having said that, I've just bought some Organix Brazilian keratin, heat defence spray Confused because it was the only spray which said it didn't contain salt. So how long has your treatment lasted so far?

oreoaddict · 11/07/2013 15:50

Sofa, just done some research on the L'Oreal stuff and am a tad confused, although it doesn't take much Grin Which one do you use? There are loads of different ones. Does it matter if you're using a colour protector one, If you don't have coloured hair? Do you prefer L'Oreal or Pureology?

SofaCanary · 11/07/2013 16:14

As far as I know all the Everpures are salt free, not sure which one I have and I can't be arsed going upstairs Grin It's nowt special but I find it lighter and less moisturising than the Pureology so it's nice to alternate between the two.

My hair seems to prefer Pureology, I'm using the hydrate range. Now it is pricey but you really don't need a lot. I find it better to do two shampoos with only a 10p sized blob each time, rather than one shampoo using a big dollop iykwim.

I did the treatment in Feb and I'm still pretty much frizzle free although the new hair growth at the roots looks scruffy now so I tend to run the straighteners over them. I do only wash my hair once a week though (minging I know) so that's probably why it's lasted so long.

HTH a bit Smile

DharmaLovesDraco · 11/07/2013 19:06

Have you washed it yet MustTidyUp? I'm tempted to wash tomorrow morning......

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/07/2013 20:35

I've been lurking for ages and finally got round to ordering the kit which arrived yesterday. Roped my mum in to helping me do it today - will keep you posted!

DharmaLovesDraco · 11/07/2013 20:42

I really, really want to wash my hair, not because it feels greasy but because it is so god damn FLAT!!

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 11/07/2013 21:09

Bloody hell just typed and lost a long reply.
All washed and styled. It's fine but flat. Soft and shiny. But flat. I prefer it big and even though dried it with te BBH it didn't hold the curl as it would do usually. Although it has a bit of a wave so much better than the afghan hound look.
Next wash I'll use less conditioner and no oil and maybe some sort of volumising product (do most contain salt?)
Will be interested to see what it's like in the morning though a it usually puffs up overnight.
Glad I washed it out today!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 15/07/2013 20:32

Any updates anyone?

Oreo, did you scrap the keratin kits shampoo?

MrsAlwaysRight · 15/07/2013 21:56

Washed it this morning which was a relief with all the hot weather- I didn't venture out in public at all yesterday as it looked so gross!

Gave it a quick blast with the hairdryer before work and it looks pretty good, very smooth but quite a lot flatter than normal (usually very big and frizzy if left to dry naturally. So I am pretty impressed so far Smile

Can anyone recommend a heat protection product that's suitable?

oreoaddict · 16/07/2013 09:06

coco, well I haven't chucked them, but I made the hideous mistake last night of washing my hair with that joico one and my hair is thick with grease! Confused Honestly, I'm not exaggerating. It doesn't lather at all, so I had to wash it a couple of times, but even then, you just don't feel like you're getting it clean at all. When I was drying it, I just thought it was taking a bit longer than normal, but then realised that the wet wasn't water, it was just grease! I'll be washing it again later with the keratin kits one, only because haven't bought any others yet. How's yours going? How's the scalp? Grin

Mrs, glad you're happy with it Smile I'll be watching with interest regarding the heat protection spray. I still haven't found one. I don't straighten my hair anymore because it dries straight anyway when I blast it with the hairdryer now, but I'd still like to put something on it before I blow dry. I guess you're still damaging your hair, aren't you.

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 16/07/2013 12:13

I'd say I'm reasonably happy. I used a normal shampoo at the weekend to try and introduce a bit more oomph. It's great if I want to wear it up, just leave to dry and it goes up nicely without looking frizzy but it's a bit flat down. I wanted to do it so it was easy for holiday, which it will be.
I use the organix shampoo and its easy to lather and not greasy - I don't really suffer with grease though. oreo why not try a little normal shampoo in the roots and sodium free through the ends?

oreoaddict · 16/07/2013 15:16

Must, that's weird! I was just about to ask if anyone used normal shampoo for the roots and sodium free everywhere else. Guess I could give it a go. You say your hair is quite flat now, do you have a lot of hair? Thought you said you did.....

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 16/07/2013 15:58

I have a lot of hair but the hair itself is quite fine so with no volume at the crown it looks a bit rubbish.
