Have you used the Brazilian Hair Straightening / Blow-Dry Home Keratin Treatment from Amazon?

I have read lots of threads about this kit and people seem to rave about it to reduce the frizziness in hair but I remember reading a while back that some contain formaldehyde and I concerned that this one contains it. I have read the ingredients but am unsure if formaldehyde goes by other chemical names?
Just worried I'll do damage to myself for the sake of frizz free hair.
Any ideas?

Morning ladies I use the organix keratin shampoo and conditioner plus the heat defence spray and I can honestly say they are no different from ordinary products in the way my hair responds.

When I shampoo it, it does feel coarse and wooly but once its conditioned it feels soft and sleek again. The shampoo lathers well and the conditioner feels a bit odd at first because its a bit rubbery. All products smell lovely just like coconuts.

I am now ell into week 9 and I still only wash my hair every 3 days, the only bit of frizz is where it has grown in the 9 weeks

oreoaddict · 17/07/2013 11:06

Purple, I bought the organix keratin smooth spray, assuming it was a heat defence spray, but when I got it home, realised that it didn't say anything about heat defence and it was more to aid smoothness when straightening. Is this the same one you have? Week 9 and still no frizz?!Smile Impressive! I have 8 weeks in my head, as a goal before frizz starts returning. Anything after that is a major bonus as far as I'm concerned!

Any more updates?...

I did mine again on Thursday because I wrecked it in the pool on holiday. However, my hair is much greasier than last time. Has anyone washed it out earlier than the 72 hrs? I am scared to wreck my hair permanently but feel disgusting today. Batiste didn't help much last time.

oreoaddict · 20/07/2013 11:38

prima, what did you wash your hair with? My hair is definitely greasier than it was before I did the treatment, but overall, I'm still happy with it. If it weren't for batiste, I'd probably have to wash my hair every other day now. But then I suppose it doesn't bother me as much having to wash my hair more, because it takes a quarter of the time to style. Well, it styles itself really. I don't let it air dry because it would take all day, so I just blast it with the hairdryer for about 10 minutes and that's me done. Does your hair feel in better condition now? Forgetting the grease, that is.

oreoaddict · 20/07/2013 11:40

Oh and do you think you might have used a bit more this time? Did you get it close to your roots? When did you do it last? It could just be that you've over keratined. I know they say it's safe to use once a month, but I would have thought that would be too often. Maybe it will just get less greasy as time goes on.

oreoaddict · 20/07/2013 15:59

prima, I read your post wrong I think. I thought you meant you already had washed it, even though you clearly said you hadn't, when I read it back Grin

How many times did you wash your hair with the purifying shampoo before hand? If you haven't washed it yet, I wouldn't worry too much. I wouldn't wash it before the 72 hours though.

I'm going on holiday in October, but I think I'll just tie my hair up in a top knot and try my hardest not to get it wet. I'll probably fail after the first day though. I guess when you're on your holidays you don't want to have to worry about your hair do you.

primallass · 22/07/2013 20:18

Sorry have just come back to this. I did manage to sit it out for the 72hrs and it is better again. It was far more greasy the second time round though.

My hair is chin-length and we were at Center Parcs so there was no avoiding getting it wet.

oreoaddict · 23/07/2013 13:13

Glad your hair has gone back to normal prima. Bet those 72 hours felt much longer Grin Did you put the same amount of treatment on this time round?

Do you mind if I ask which Center Parcs you went to? I live round the corner from one.

oreoaddict · 26/07/2013 13:39

Hey fellow Brazilian swishes! Grin

So how is it swishing? Thought I'd give an update and hopefully hear some of yours.

Ok, so I've been really really pleased with it overall, except for the fact that my hair get's greasy quicker than before, but I've already mentioned that several times I think Grin

I've been really happy with the reduced styling time, smoothness and of course, the no frizz, which is by far what I was happiest with.

I had a few problems with the keratin kits shampoo and conditioner in the beginning, but in the end, I decided it was the best of a bad lot. I just don't put very much in and I don't put a lot of heat on the roots when I'm drying, so it lasts a little longer.

So I have been really happy.....that is, until this morning Sad When I was drying it, it still felt really smooth and glossy and I was still feeling quite smug at how I'd be finished in 5 minutes with no need for any GHD's, again. However, once my hair was completely dry, I noticed that it was really bushy and quite frizzy towards the end. Looked kind of frazzled and brittle........like it used to. I'm not saying it's back completely to the way it was, but I'd say it's getting there and after 3 1/2 weeks Confused I'm obviously not very happy.

I remember coco and hopas saying that it was wearing off slightly after 3 weeks, but that was more about the curl coming back, which mine has pretty much after the second time I washed it. I wasn't bothered by the curl coming back though, I just didn't want the course, frizz to come back so soon, well ever! But realistically I was hoping for at least 2 months, before I had to consider doing it again.

I really don't want to do it again already!

So anyway, just thought I'd share.........and moan Grin

How's everyone else getting on? Better than me I hope.

Oh and I did add a few drops of that extraordinary oil the last couple of times I washed it. I read the ingredients and it didn't say it contained salt. Wondering if that had anything to do with it.

Purpleknickers · 26/07/2013 21:21

I am just starting to notice now in week 11 that my hair is frizzing a bit in this humid weather and also it's looking not so shiny and swishy.

Not sure I want to Brazilian it again already and a tiny bit of me wants to sometimes embrace my waves with urban fudge sea salt stuff now and again. But I know if I do then I've ruined it .. Decisions decisions.

trickydickie · 26/07/2013 22:54

It has taken me a while but think I have managed to read through all the posts on this topic. Oreo - what a shame that it has only really lasted 3 and a half weeks. Considering the time it takes to apply the treatment think I would be a bit disappointed.

I bought the kit today on amazon. I will give anything a try to get rid of my coarse, frizz, pubic hair like hair. I am getting highlights next Saturday so may apply it the Thursday after or might have to wait til Saturday 17th August.

I will update once done.

trickydickie · 26/07/2013 22:55

Has anyone applied this treatment just a few days after highlight/colour? Was it all ok>

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 27/07/2013 10:37

I did it same day. It was fine.

trickydickie · 27/07/2013 17:42

Thanks MustTidy. I might do it on the Sunday (the day after highlights then). As I need someone around to watch the kids while I spend hours applying lotion and straightening.

macandcheesewithbaconbits · 28/07/2013 14:56

Oreoaddict
I am in a same position. 4 weeks in and it's frizzing up again and the ends don't feel good- dry and tatty.
I also realised that I was using frizz ease and mythic oil. I am so used to putting them on my hair after I wash it, I hadn't even realised that they may contain salt and interfere with the treatment.
I have been using the correct shampoo. Feel a bit silly.
Do you think it is too early to repeat the treatment?

FoxPass · 28/07/2013 20:11

I did mine a month ago and am already fluffing up in humid weather. It has drastically reduced my frizz but I still do have to at least straighten it to get it looking nice, nowhere near as much as before though.

I have very fine hair and I lost a lot doing the treatment, it just comes out really easily :( I am also more greasy than before, I can't go longer than a couple of days without washing.

It's great to be frizz-free, but not sure it's worth it.

oreoaddict · 28/07/2013 20:30

Mac, it's not too early apparently. Once a month is safe, but tbh, I don't think it's a good idea. If you're having greasy hair syndrome, like me, then my guess is it would get even greasier. I've checked the ingredients on the oil and it doesn't say anything about salt, but then I heard a lot of products say they don't when they do.

I'm going to stick it out for another couple of weeks at least. I believe the pros outweigh the cons, but that isn't to say the cons aren't relevant. I only really have one day when my hair feels clean and my ends are already feeling like straw. However, my hair overall is so much easier to maintain

macandcheesewithbaconbits · 29/07/2013 13:36

Yes I think I agree I will wait. I think the shampoo makes it greasy.

AngieM2 · 29/07/2013 19:48

Ladies, desperate to try this BUT....how do you all cope with the three day 'no wash' at the start? How does your hair know its been 3 days? Sorry if that sounds daft! How would i go to work or the gym? (Have long hair and have to tie back for both) help?

QueenofWhispers · 30/07/2013 10:35

so...i used to do this (at the salon, but will do it at home now that I've read this thread) after I had my son.

...wondering if I can use this during pregnancy?

oreoaddict · 30/07/2013 13:50

Angie, I'm afraid it's just something you have to do. You can use dry shampoo on day 3 and honestly, you won't find those 72 hours as hard as you think. I assumed because I was putting on an intense treatment and not washing it out, that my hair would feel chip pan like, but it didn't, it felt clean. As far as tying it back goes, I wasn't that strict with that tbh. I claw clipped it half back when I was just sick of it falling in my face, which was about 5 minutes after I'd finished straightening it! I wasn't that concerned as it wasn't the straightness I was bothered about. I just wanted it smooth, but I guess it depends on what you're hoping to get out of it. Having said that, I didn't notice any unsightly kinks where I tied it back.

Queen, no, definitely not safe to use while pregnant. Although it doesn't contain the dangerous chemical formaldehyde, it is still pretty potent and it does contain other chemicals which could be potentially harmful to your unborn baby. This actually includes infants in general. They recommend that you don't do the treatment if you have young children around, so ideally do it at a friends or if you're child/ren are away for at least the day. I guess they say the same about dying your hair in pregnancy though, don't they. Make sure you really ventilate the room and ideally, when you're drying the treatment into your hair, do that part outside to avoid the chocking fumes. Be warned, they are pretty strong. It felt like someone was rubbing onions into my eyes!

Good luck both of you anyway. Hope it goes well if you decide to do it.

D0oinMeCleanin · 05/08/2013 17:02

Does anyone who uses this go to the gym regularly?

I'm doing mine today but am due for a PT session tomorrow and I always get really sweaty (my hair is usually soaked with sweat) I know I can't wash it or tie it back but could I wear a towelling hair band or will I ruin it? I don't wanna walk around with sweat stinking hair for three days.

nobodysfool · 06/08/2013 08:41

Can I ask ladies which is the best high street shampoo and conditioner?

OP posts:
oreoaddict · 06/08/2013 17:43

DOoin, no definitely not a good idea to put a hair band on. If you sweat that much, I think you may just have to stay away from the gym for a couple of days.

Actually, whilst we're on the subject of sweat (nice Grin) does anybody find that their treatment wears off quicker if you sweat a fair bit? I just find that with the hot nights, I wake up with damp hair at the back and I just wondered if maybe the salt in the sweat is stripping off the treatment. It makes sense considering you can't use hair products with salt in them.
