Have you used the Brazilian Hair Straightening / Blow-Dry Home Keratin Treatment from Amazon?

I have read lots of threads about this kit and people seem to rave about it to reduce the frizziness in hair but I remember reading a while back that some contain formaldehyde and I concerned that this one contains it. I have read the ingredients but am unsure if formaldehyde goes by other chemical names?
Just worried I'll do damage to myself for the sake of frizz free hair.
Any ideas?

Hope all goes well with the big reveal oreo

I wash it approx every 3 days. After washing it this morning, I blow dried it and didn't need straighteners, and it's still very smooth. Earlier in week I left it to dry naturally and would say that this was when I noticed the curl returning.

I would still recommend this product though, I would never have been able to blow dry it like this before treatment.

Hopasholic · 04/07/2013 13:41

Yes. musttidyup < which is what I should be doing, the Amazon one

oreoaddict · 04/07/2013 13:44

Ok, so washed my hair. I have to say when I first started drying it, I could still see a fair amount of frizz, but when it was completely dry, it looked really smooth, shiny, straightish and almost frizz free. I haven't needed to use my ghd's at all, which I'm really happy about.

I really hope this lasts. I decided last minute to order some of the keratin kits shampoo and conditioner and my hair feels very clean. I was concerned that the salt free shampoo wouldn't clean my hair as thoroughly, but it has.

I guess only time will tell if it lasts the full 3 months, but at the moment I'm very happy with the results.

Are you still supposed to use heat protective spray though? Or does the keratin kind of work as a built in? heat protector?

Purpleknickers · 04/07/2013 13:53

oreo I use keratin heat protector on it, I would never let GHD's near my hair without heat protector

I am now 6 weeks in and results are still good Smile

Nagoo · 04/07/2013 14:27

.

oreoaddict · 04/07/2013 16:02

purple 6 weeks and still good results!Smile Whoohoo! What shampoo and conditioner do you use? Tbh, I think I'd be more than happy if I get 2 months out of it. I think 3 months is possibly unrealistic. I've read some reviews where they say they've got at least 6 months out of it! I would be over the moon! Grin

Which brand of heat protective spray do you use? Didn't know they did keratin ones.

oreoaddict · 04/07/2013 16:04

Nagoo, well said! Grin

Hopasholic · 04/07/2013 16:06

Ooh this thread made it into the mumsnet 'swears by' Email.

nagoo are you spying on our swishy hair? Don't be shy...... Grin

Nagoo · 04/07/2013 16:31

Sorry Grin I needed to mark my place before I ran off to school Grin

I am going to have a good old read now.

I am interested since bleaching the fuck out of my hair in al ill-advised ombre attempt I would like to not have to chop off all the frizzy bits Hmm

Nice swish Hops Grin

DisappointedHorse · 04/07/2013 18:57

Ok, I am halfway through. I've just washed and dried my hair with the clarifying shampoo and about to embark on stage 2.

The clarifying shampoo has made my hair feel really soft and bouncy!

Purpleknickers · 04/07/2013 19:03

oreo the organix Brazilian keratin shampoo and conditioner same brand heat protector.
If you got your kit on amazon just look at the bit where that say customers that bought this also bought this .. If you know what I mean? There are loads of products recommended

I'm hoping for at least 3 months out of mine

oreoaddict · 04/07/2013 19:06

Horse, yeah I was impressed with the clarifying shampoo actually. I was expecting it to leave my hair really big and frizzy, but it didn't. Let us know how you get on Smile

DisappointedHorse · 04/07/2013 19:46

Right now I'm waiting to start drying it and its making my eyes sting like crazy. The innocuous and pleasant smell is now less so.

It also feels slightly burny on my scalp, no worse than hair dye though. And no of course I didn't do a patch test.

awaywego1 · 05/07/2013 11:09

Hey ladies-quick bit of advice if possible?
I've got very thick coarse wavy hair with a thick shortish fringe. I've used a keratin treatment before and it worked well-made it more manageable rather than straight. I'm going camping this week and don't have time to do it all really as it takes ages with my hair but wondering if I could just do my fringe? Or would that look wierd and/or not work? I can tie my hair back into a bun but its the fringe that looks horrendous without straightening! Any thoughts gratefully received Grin

oreoaddict · 05/07/2013 12:20

Hmm not sure just doing your fringe would look right. I'd just go over your hair with straighteners for now and then do the whole treatment when you get back.

DisappointedHorse · 05/07/2013 15:22

Ok I'm all done.

It took a while but my hair is smooth and shiny now. I didn't wake up with vertical hair this morning so it looks ok even on day 2 with a bit of help from my GHDs.

The worst part was blow drying it, my eyes and throat were really sore. The fumes were dreadful! Straightening it was ok though. It did look slightly fluffy after I'd re-straightened it this morning so I whacked on a bit more keratin on some parts and repeated. Hopefully it'll be ok!

Right now, it doesn't look much different to how it usually looks when I've washed and straightened it. The proof will be after I've washed it. I'd be happy if its not totally straight, just not to have to battle with the hair straighteners for half an hour a day to get rid of the fluff.

oreoaddict · 07/07/2013 11:43

horse, yeah I found the fumes really bad too. At one stage I didn't think I could carry on because my eyes were streaming so much, but eventually I just shut my eyes and also, I didn't breathe through my mouth.

Not sure if it should have looked fluffy after you'd done the treatment and I'm not sure if it's ok to put more keratin on. Did you feel like you hadn't put enough on before?

My hair is definitely greasier since doing this treatment, but it's worth it because the condition is so much better. It kind of feels greasier than it looks iyswim. I'm just going to get through a hell of a lot of dry shampoo!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 08/07/2013 18:49

had my hair coloured and cut today. hairdresser was impressed with condition and manageability of my hair. she uses a different Brazilian blow dry when she does clients and the one she uses can be washed within an hour and is from France. ill get a link...

Hopasholic · 08/07/2013 22:41

Oooh! Sounds interesting coconuts. My hairdresser said same about the condition of mine. She uses one called 'La Braziliana'

carriedaway · 09/07/2013 11:31

'Bush head' reporting in!
Well it has been a week now since I washed off and I am really pleased!
Don't know what I do when I'm asleep but I had bed hair every morning when the keratin was on so had to do squill straighten to look presentable. It felt fine & didn't look too greasy til the last day when I just put some dry shampoo on the front and it was fine. I usually have to out a lot of serum on and was worried about going without but it didn't need it.
I washed off after my couch25k run (bloody mumsnet inspiring me to better myself Grin) and quickly blasted it before tea. Usually that would mean frizz overload but it was only a tiny bit frizzy and then smoothed very easily when I ran the straighteners over it.
I am using the tresemme keratin shampoo and conditioner and actually feel it had improved over the subsequent washes. It is a bit flatter than before but I have thick hair and just dry it upside down and that seems to do the trick. My hair definitely feels swishier, softer and in better condition. It is overdue a cut and I think it will be even better after that (will be interested to see if my hairdresser notices)
A few people have commented that it looks nice without promoting and DH, who thought it was a waste of time, has begrudgingly agreed that it has worked!
The best thing for me is that it is now so quick to straighten and look presentable, which is saving valuable time in the mornings before getting out with the DCs. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who is tempted - thus may only make sense to people who have lived with frizz balks for years but it is not a 'wonder product' in that I now have shampoo advert cat deely type hair, however what I do have is 'normal' manageable hair which is all I wants for years and so to me that is genuinely amazing Smile

carriedaway · 09/07/2013 11:32

Sorry for the typos - on mobile!

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 09/07/2013 18:11

I did it today! Not too hard to do. Used about 1/3 of the tub so I might've been a bit stingy. Had a cut and highlights first with a fringe put in so look a lot different! Dried it outside so no problem with fumes. It's very straight and flat at the moment but not lank it looks fine if you like that straight look. I'm a big and bouncy fan myself so look forward to seeing what I can do with it after a wash on Saturday morning.

SofaCanary · 09/07/2013 18:24

Drying it outside is a stroke of genius, MustTidyUp (love the name!), did mine back in Feb and could do with doing it again but the thought of the fumes, and the faff, has been putting me off.

Anyone know if I should highlight before or after?

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 09/07/2013 19:02

I had mine highlighted today. Before. Can colour before keratin but not until 2 weeks after keratin.

DisappointedHorse · 09/07/2013 19:54

I washed mine yesterday and I'm really impressed, blasting it with the hair dryer leaves it absolutely fine. I certainly wouldn't be afraid to leave the house. A quick flick with the straighteners leaves it looking like glass, it is VERY straight though.

Right now, it feels like a miracle. I've been in London in the heat today which would normally leave me with ridiculous fluff. Nothing, it hasn't moved. I'm not even waking up with bed head!!

Lets see how long it lasts. Beware of Tresemme Keratin Smooth heat protection spray though, it contains salt. I'm glad I checked as I own it already and would have just used it.
