How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

I am loving this thread- my nails have been the most neglected part of me but am now sorted with my filing/buffing/base and top coat. Can I ask the nail experts- can anyone recommend any nice spring nail colours? I've generally found Revlon have colours I like in the past but don't know if there are better ones for staying power/colours or if doesn't really make a difference once you do the base and top coat? Any recommendations??

I like buffing my nails as it seems to help them grow very strong. Also, as I am now getting pretty ancient (55) it evens out the ridges that are developing. But I am a bit worried about doing it too often. Can anyone tell me how often is about right?

I've found it doesn't make a difference once you find a good base and top coat. I generally just collect the free nails inc colours when glamour do them free (or when coka cola do a promo). I love corals and pinks for summer though, esp on toes.

Oh crap, I need to make a list from some of these posts!

Trying to stop biting my nails for lent and with the advent of spring (here's hoping) that will kick start me into de-hairing my legs, regular body cream, light touch of fake tan etc and doing feet and toes properly....

I do, however, agree on the whole eyebrows thing. If you do nothing else - keep the eyebrows tidy. If I add on a two minute application of concealer/foundation and some mascara, by giddy I find that just makes me look so much more human!

Oh, and for me, straightening my hair just gives me an instant "she doesn't look a total shambles" appearance.

Need to read this thread properly tomorrow though!!

(I just have absolutely no idea where I will find the time for a lot more but I may just have to!)

Is that OPI Nail Envy stuff really good? Saw it recommended in the mumsnet email... Amazon have it for £7 or so, so figured it is at least worth a try....

What does loreal mythical oil do ?

Report
mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 20:16

Hi Teajunky - thanks Blush

I use the mythic oil everyday - It seperates my layers, keeps my hair shiny and helps keep my hair healthy. It is basically an alternative to Morrocan oil (just cheaper, smell better imho, and doesn't weigh hair down).

anon - it is the only strengthener I've ever found that didn't peel off my nails. I found my nails grew quicker and stronger after 2 weeks of use and for the first time ever I found I was able to grow out the splits and peels I had in my nails - haven't had my nails split or break once in the past year. Also - it stengthens them without making them rock hard (which isn't good for them - they need to be flexible).

Gurl - I think the trick is to use the ridge remover once a week and then the number 4 side when you want to top up on shine Smile

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 20:18

Also anon - be aware there are a few nail envy formulas...the original is shiny, the matte looks natural (and matte!), the maintenance is pointless and they do coloured ones that I've never tried.

Love the idea of a primer .
Eye shadow that is gentle on the lids ....hate pulling and dragging .
AND PLEASE a mascara that wont end up on the upper part of my cheek by lunchtime .

Carpe - happy to share though it will be "the basics"!!!!!

Basics works for me - it's more than I've got at to moment Blush Grin

Foundation I always go for the best I can afford - in my case I swear by Bobbi Brown as I'm so pale. I will however not be applying mixed with moisturer any more. Incidentally, I'm guessing that tinted moisturiser is a no-no too?

Eyebrows plucked, nails trimmed (can't stand them long as they go all peely!), body brushed and coated in Soap and Glory toning stuff ( -burns- tingles) and hair mask done.

How long do you think it takes for all this stuff to become noticeable?

spider - going in to store is probably wise Wink

My personal basics list would be massive so a proper list would be:

Cleanse, TONE (yes I am shouting), Moisturise morning and evening. Simple is a good basic brand but most important is that it is alcohol free.
Primer - (try GOSH at superdrug, tesco barbera daly or bodyshop)
Foundation - I use BE, Mally or Bobbi brown depending on what look I want but I've heard loads of people suggest rimmel foundations and the mabelline mousse one (not the foam - I had a look in boots the other day and it felt very drying)
Eyeshadow - no need for expensive eyeshadow - no7 is good (ones in quads) and MooMin highly recommends Sleek from superdrug
Mascara - For a natural but buildable look No7 lash adjust is good - doesn't flake/transfer to rest of face
Lipstick - again rimmel are good, max factor for staying power.

Amazing thread Smile i gave up smoking last week so am enjoying looking after my skin and myself in general.
I have bought the Liz Earle skincare ramge so once im out of my decleor im starting on that.
mrsmartin can i ask:
What are the best base and top coats for nails, am lusting after a chanel polish
What is the benefit of a LD crystal file

Can anyone tell me what the hell to do with eyeshadow, i wear one colour, slap it on my lower lid and it dusappears by lunchtime. Id like yo be a bit braver, im blonde with blue eyes and pale skin and like to wear coral-ish ysl blusher.
I love my YSL foundation, chanel mascara and elizabeth arden lip protector.

Am deffo getting some primer.

Also any recommendations for soft small grain facial exfoliators or does the liz earl cleanse and polish do thst?

LADIES - please stop with the adulation - I'm not worthy Blush

ok from the top...

BE = Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals - it is a mineral powder foundation - great stuff

pat I've pm'd you back but thanks - I'm glad you are already seeing results (and more importantly that DH has noticed Wink)

moss - the LD file seals the nail edge so great if you get peeling. I love it because I can see-saw my nails back and forth instead of filing from the outside edge to the centre - so much easier. Also - emery boards can rip your nails but the LD file doesn't. £12 but it lasts forever.

For your eyeshadow - you can get eye primers (face primers are to oily to work properly) but I would try foiling youe eyeshadow first (this is where you apply it wet). If all else fails try the bare minerals eye primer.

your muslin cloth will gently exfoliate your skin - there are loads of different types and benefits to each type so I would suggest leaving it for a couple of months until your skin gets used to your routine. In the meantime if you get any flakey bits just grab some sugar from the kitchen and mix it with a blob of cleans and polish.

I need to eat now - back in a bit...Grin

Oh - forgot base and top coat...

I use opi nail envy as my base as I need the treatment and seche vite at my top coat (gives a thicker look). DON'T BUY THESE FULL PRICE - GET THEM FROM EBAY OR AMAZON Nails in kensington caviar base and top coats are also highly rated by other MN's.
