How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

All the above advice is good. To look groomed Rule 1: don't have children. Rule 2: don't have pets. Rule 3: don't set unrealistic expectations

Any amount of primer and straightener is ruined with 8am dog walk in sub zero temps after getting kids ready for school. Even Gwennie P looks bad on her off days and shes macrobiotic organic.

All for painting nails, base coat, colour, top coat, cleanse, tone, moisturise, exercise, but there is a balance between scruffy slattern and teeth whitened, hair relaxed, eyelash lengthening (no, not joking) ipl bikini, or waxacologist coming to your house for weekly visits.

As my wise grandmother told me, a little effort shows you care and it never hurts to try your best, little and often is the way forward............. because you're worth it

Mally mascara for me see here. I find the normal one in the white tube is sufficient - I have the waterproof too but find the normal one is pretty life-proof. Any you can return them if you think they're crap...

Really enjoying reading the thread....toner has uses! Who knew!

Today I did my nails with base coat and two colour coats and top coat and it did look rather smashing for at least 30 minutes.....

Then in a fit of enthusiasm I decided to experiment with sugaring, which i have been meaning to do for ages, but must have overcooked the mixture as i now have caramel stuck everywhere, including my lovely nails and DH came home and said "why does it smell like the fair in here"...

purple shades will look gorgeous - lilac or a rose pink for the day, deeper purple for evenings. You could also go for creamy golds if purple sounds scary. Two coats of black mascara on the upper lashes, one coat on the lower and black eyepencil on the inner upper lash line. That will give you sexy simple eyes...

I apply powder eyeshadow with my fingers - if it needs blending then I use a clean eyeshadow brush but I don't usually need to.

I m a similar colouring
I love bobbi brown stonewashed nude palette and shimmering nudes palettes
(various shades of brown and nude ish colours)
I also find a dark brown eyeliner is nicer than black
Mac do a lovely olive green and a kindof metallic brown ish colour that are also fab (to do a smokey eye type effect with nude base)

purple is a good colour!! but neutral colours will never look bad. If you go for brown eyeliner and mascara make sure it doesn't contain any red pigment - it will make you look tired. I think black looks great on everyone but it is less natural and more 'wow'.

I keep thinking I should do more to my nails than just keeping them clean & trimmed. I don't really fancy painting them all the time, so perhaps a buffer would make them a bit smarter? I saw this LD 4-in-1 buffer & nail file - what do you think?

btw, my facial lady told me to start using toner (she suggested Simple) as some face washes can leave behind a residue & the toner will also help remove that. The same lady did my wedding make-up with BE & I've used nothing else since - love it!

The last time I used purple eye shadow (many years ago) I looked like I had bad bruising! - perhaps I chose the wrong shade? (I am 'natural beige' (BE) with blue/green eyes) - I do wonder if I actually know how to put eye shadow on Blush - do you know of a good youtube clip or tutorial somewhere?

Make up - try Lisa Eldridge.

And how long should nail buffers last - mine do maybe two uses and they stop working - is it me or am I using the wrong sort? Last buffer was a Sally Hansen variety and then the rougher bit went completely smooth. Maybe my nails Sad

carpe in my experience, unless you actually have proper ridges in your nails that need removing, the buffers from poundland work absolutely fine so it doesn't matter if they don't last (I get 2 or 3 uses from each one, only do it once a week and you get 4 in a pack so I essentially pay £1 every 2 months on buffers - not bad eh?).

bessie if you have green in your eyes put a shadow with gold in it on...it will highlight the green flecks...

And when all else fails with eyes - just wet them down and apply them with an eyeliner brush as a thin line on the top lash (no flick required but stop about a 1/4cm before you get to the outer corner of the eye - if you go all the way it drags the eye down and makes you look tired). Navy blue looks great on everyone as eyeliner and makes the whites of your eyes look whiter Wink

moss Urban Decay's Naked palette is great for shadows and for people who aren't quite sure what to do with them. £40 in the shops but I got mine from e bay for £18, it was meant to be a second, the cellophane wrapper was slightly ripped and that was all.

Beautiful colours that suit everyone and you can't really go wrong with the colours so you can experiment :)

Oh I so need to find a Poundland!

On the down side, DH was at Tesco at lunch time and phones to ask if we needed anything (I've got him well trained! Grin) and so I directed him to the make up aisle to source me primer... and it was blooming' sold out Angry D'ya think that's the power of MNet and mrsmartin?! Grin

Wrt to the primer it is FAB, so is the Face Lift cream - like the Bobbi Brown one but £7 instead of £30 and the Goodbye Yellow base coat nail polish is AMAZING - it has a slight blueish tint so you paint it on and you instantly look like you have a fresh French manicure and only about £4 iirc. Her pressed powder is great too - not really covering like mineral powder but certainly very nice colours and I always have it in my bag for emergency shine. I am stunned at the quality of Barbara Daly products, they are really very good.

So ive bought today:
A nice nail varnish in a dark beige similar to the chanel (but quarter of the price)
Barb Daly Primer (picked up by dh who went to tesco with a note bless)
2 eyeshadow quad things, one with neutrals and brown, the other with greens and gold.

Just need to learn how to apply or will end up sweeping one colour across the eyelid as usual

oooohhhh mossy you are going to feel so glam. And there's nothing wrong with just using one colour eyeshadow-alot of make up artists are now doing single-colour eye looks. I just sweep over the eyelid with my finger and then blend the line with a clean eyeshadow brush (to do a smokey eye etc is really easy - see the eldridge link further up the thread). Just have a play - it is fun to play with make-up Grin!!

i swear the make up companies must love threads like this!

Since first reading it at lunch time I have applied moisturiser to my hands (which I never do) and now spent £26 on boots and ordered l'oreal primer from amazon (I tried a sample and was ASTONISHED at what it did for my face).

So my new resolutions are
to busy my hands! (moisturise them whenever I can or tidy my nails)
cleanse, tonse, moisturise properly
See what primer can do for me!
hair mask once a week (at least)

That will do to start with!
