I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

FoofFighter · 11/02/2012 16:05

wow this has really taken off!

I didn't do mine in the end last night, got to go out tonihgt and tomorrow night so will do it Monday morning then I have time to rectify it all week till I need be seen in public again Grin Will only be doing the back ponytail, not the nape though, quite high up and brought up teletubby aerial style for the snip.

Do you think though that if I did two pony tails bang on the sides - think Princess leia - what would happen?

bebejones · 11/02/2012 16:27

So if that's 44 people with MN haircuts, working on an average of £40 a haircut, we have deprived hairdressers saved ourselves over £1700 in total! Thanks again Psammead!

whatkungfuthat · 11/02/2012 16:33

I've got it too. I haven't been to the hairdressers in over 2 yrs and mine also gets treated to a perfect10 home dye job and swished with Babyliss big hair. MN has saved me £££'s

Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/02/2012 16:44

Ok... So now that I'm an official
MN haircut fan, should I invest in a Babyliss big hair?! Hmm

whatkungfuthat · 11/02/2012 16:52

I love mine but because my hair is quite layered I have to pull the ends down with straightners. There is a new smaller version that may be better for layers

whatkungfuthat · 11/02/2012 16:53

Sorry, didn't see the Hmm ignore me!

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 11/02/2012 17:04

I also did a home dye job this week because of a thread on here Grin have saved £££££

Good to see another MN haircut thread. Great reading Grin

I've been doing mine since the first thread so a couple of years at least, hair is poker straight and fine. Totally unforgiving. First time I did it my uber critical snob of a MIL wanted to know why I'd been wasting money on 'an obviously expensive cut' while we were so skint...

The thing with the basic MN cut is that to loose any length on the underneath layers at the back you have to start with really long hair and cut masses off. Simple maths - 'tis quite a long way from the nape of the neck to teh hairline at the front, then you've got the ponytail length too.

So, yeah, I do an adapted MN cut so I don't end up with a ratty tatty bottom layer. Hair is +/- bra band length so not short as such.

I always do the all-in-one-ponytail-right-on-hairline cut first. Then I section off my hair to do the bottom / back 1/3. Put the front out of the way in bunches to each side and make a ponytail right at the top of the back section, pull it to the front (along my parting) and chop, snip, snip, stab, sorted.

Then, 'cause I like my hair long but with layers around the face I section of the front of my hair (from in front of ears) do another ponytail.

The snip snip stab stab bit is really, really important. The more attention you pay to it the better it'll look. Neatness of ponytail is vital too, on my straight hair anyway, maybe less so with curls.

msbuggywinkle · 11/02/2012 17:50

I read the thread last night...and did I this morning!

Only took 2 inches off as I don't like having flappy bits of hair that I can't tie back, but it looks great!

TheScarlettPimpernel · 11/02/2012 17:52

What the....HOW DOES THIS WORK?!?!?!?!

Another satisfied customer signing in with Wine for Psammead Grin

I read this last night and PROMISED myself I wouldn't, but....

I did it in 2 timid batches. THe first was about 2 inches off in total because there were loads of long straggly bits, and the second was about an inch. If anything my hair looks longer and thicker because it cut off all the hideous old dregs of ancient highlights/split ends. I think I might go in again because I wouldn't mind it being visibly shorter.

For anyone wondering whether to do it - mine is just past shoulder length, very very thick, slightly wavy, mostly one length and with a thick and unattractive fringe I'm trying to grow out.

Because I'm growing out the fringe it's in a bit of a side parting, so I put the unicorn horn right on my hairline where the hair parts.

Hurrah! Just going in again for one last chop....

MrsSnaplegs · 11/02/2012 17:54

Unfortunately my hair is too short but I am trying to persuade my DD (6) to let me do hersGrin
On the back of this though I did let DH at DS hair with the clippers - at 14 months his hair was getting long enough to tie upGrin he now looks like a shorn sheepGrin

Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/02/2012 18:19

Oh my Hmm was meant to be thoughtful! Iv been contemplating one for a while, but with my hair needing chopping and not having pennies for the hairdresser I put it off. Now... I have about 30 on my boots card and nappies to buy, so I may treat myself with my points! Grin

VodkaKnockers · 11/02/2012 18:57

I have just had a go and tbh i cant really see any difference but it has spurred me on to give myself a fringe. Rather proud of the result.

Off to wash and straighten this barnet and hopefully see something. If not, then a wee trip to town for decent scissors and attempt no2

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 11/02/2012 19:04

coconutty what do you use for your home dye?

countessbabycham · 11/02/2012 19:05

3 more to the count - me and DD's.
DD's hair looks neater for it and a trim off the ends.
My growing out shoulder length bob looks fantastic with the process done with about 4 inches off.Didn't want any off the length and its given it a far better shape.
Very pleased!

Casualty · 11/02/2012 19:18

Did mine this afternoon and it looks fab even DH said so Grin however got carried away with my new hairdressing ability and DS now has a fringe like Worzel Gummidge Blush

pluckingupcourage · 11/02/2012 19:31

When you're cutting into the ends of the ponytail, what are you aiming for? How do I know if I'm doing that bit right?
