I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

I'm still plucking up courage. Anyone whose hair wasn't all that long to start with, how much did you take off? Or put another way how long was your unicorn horn after you'd cut it?

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 11/02/2012 13:49

I've done it ...is good but how do I get the overall length shorter?

LackaDAISYcal · 11/02/2012 13:51

It's not as if you're likely to meet me MrsAA, so probably :D
Will upload later, am on phone now and it's a painful process.
I'm going to keep doing this though; I like the money saving aspect of it, but I need to let it grow lots before I have another go!

Chubfuddler · 11/02/2012 13:55

Have just watched clip for nth time, noting he says it's important the pony tail is v neat.

bebejones · 11/02/2012 13:56

Chub - My hair was just past shoulder length when I started. Unicorn horn was about 5-6" before cutting, and about 3.5" after cutting. Had to put into nape of neck ponytail and cut about 2" off that. Hair now just above shoulders. HTH

bebejones · 11/02/2012 13:57

Oh & I cut it wet so I could really scrape my hair flat to my head!

mrsalwaysawake · 11/02/2012 14:03

I have a bit of an ishoo with my hair when it's a bit layered (like it now is): the bit at just past ear height always looks too thick. Without altering the length of the nice front bits round my face, is there an easy way to thin this bit out?

Psammead · 11/02/2012 14:07

Wow! I should havekept a record of everyone cutting their hair! I wonder jow many we are up to?

OP posts:
ohdarcy · 11/02/2012 14:08

But how do you cut the nape of neck pony? Do you pull it to the front?

Chubfuddler · 11/02/2012 14:12

Have done it!

Not dramatically different as my hair was above shoulder already, but lots of long layers around face. I like it! Tbh v similar to how my hair always seems to end up after a trip to the salon.

AllPastYears · 11/02/2012 14:46

Did mine last night, and DH has finally asked me about it - not from the dramatic difference in my hair (so it can't be that bad) but after seeing a pile of hair in the bin Grin. He peered at it and asked if I'd done something to my fringe - obviously didn't occur to him that I might have done something rather more drastic.

TBH it's a bit Suzi Quatro, the layers are shorter than I'd normally go for (though they look OK) but I'd like more off the length. Might have to try the two pony tail method next time.

Just wondering whether to blow the 30 quid I saved on some clothes Smile.

HappyHippyChick · 11/02/2012 14:53

Dh is back from the shops and hasn't noticed yet Confused will see if my sister notices later!

NoillyPrat · 11/02/2012 15:01

I've done it Grin

I have rubbish scissors it seems nothing to do with me of course as I couldn't cut it in a straight line so kept taking more and more off! Kept checking and it didn't look any different so I put a ponytail at the nape of my neck and cut a few inches off.

The length's good and the layers look fab but my side fringe needs a bit of a change. Going to have a play with the straighteners and scissors again.

Thanks Psammead, you've saved me a fortune :) Wine and Thanks to you.

handbagCrab · 11/02/2012 15:08

After reading this yesterday we nipped to the trafford centre to buy some hairdresser scissors from boots.

I had a go last night and it looks nice, very similar to the haircut I had & was paying £45 a pop for. I didn't take much off though and the back needs trimming more as the ends are a bit dry.

Later I'm going to wash and straighten my hair and then have another go. I may need to do another ponytail though but I am confused about how you do one at the back? I can't picture it and certainly can't imagine it going well for me :)

Thanks for the thread and the idea!

Eclairwaldorf · 11/02/2012 15:20

there are hairdressers up and down the country weeping into their P45s Sad

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 11/02/2012 15:28

I can't believe I have been paying for haircuts for so long - what a con! It's so easy. Think I'll try ds's hair tomorrow...

NoillyPrat · 11/02/2012 15:31

Done my fringe now and I love it :)

bebejones · 11/02/2012 15:39

The nape of the neck ponytail I just brought hair round to the front on one side, cut as straight as I could then swished it to the other side & trimmed again to level it up. Might just be luck that it is even! Hmm

2gorgeousboys · 11/02/2012 15:41

I read the thread with interest last night as I'm desperate for a hair cut but have not had time to go to the hairdressers. I resisted however as I'd had a couple of glasses of wine Blush

Plucked up the courage this afternoon and am very pleased with it. Although DS2 got very upset when he came into the bathroom and saw me attacking my hair with scissors.

Going to wash and straighten my hair and then tidy it up although I may take a little more off. DH laughed his head off last night at "silly women thinking they coould cut their own hair" so is going to have a bit of a shock when he comes home from his course tonight!

Psammead · 11/02/2012 15:42

Eclair - I did spare a thought for the hairdressers too. I didn't know it was going to be so popular. Maybe they need to up their game!

Psammead · 11/02/2012 15:49

Oh yes, I should have added to my OP, anyone who wants to do the MN Psammead Haircut must wire £36.50 to my account in the Seychelles. Or else there is a hair falling out curse. Thankyouverymuch.

Oh silly me, how did that stray full stop come to settle in the middle of that sum?

That's Psammead with two ms, remember. Thanks.
