I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Did mine this afternoon too, much to the horror of dd (16), who begrudgingly admitted later that it looked pretty good Grin. My next mn inspired act will be a trip down to Lush to buy the henna Hair colour i read about on here last week. A brand new look for under a tenner, thanks mumsnet Smile

HettyKett · 11/02/2012 19:44

You're aiming for a shaving brush looking end to the ponytail, so cut into the cut end of the ponytail all over in little varying snips 'till you get that. As in, snip with the ends of the scissors pointing to the cut ends of the ponytail, not shortening it as such but feathering it.

MrsSnaplegs · 11/02/2012 19:51

Ok have just done DD hair and it looks great but could get away with another inch off so will redo it tomorrowGrin
DH said it looks fab tooWink
I now need to grow my hair so I can have it as wellGrin

frownieface · 11/02/2012 19:53

I have been complimented twice today on my new hair do Grin

Bufster · 11/02/2012 19:57

I did mine this morning. Well sort of. I have long hair and only cut off about 2 cm, so no fringe for me, but it looks really nice. I am never going to the hair dressers again!

Am feeling very tempted to cut some more off now...

countessbabycham · 11/02/2012 19:57

dreamingofcalm, come tell me all about Lush Henna and whether it covers odd greys, whether its permanent/fades etc please!

TheScarlettPimpernel · 11/02/2012 20:04

Mine is now washed, conditioned, roughly blow dried and done. It looks absolutely gorgeous Shock

I'm not joking. I've spent £40 on cuts that didn't look this good. it's so NATURAL!

ohdarcy · 11/02/2012 20:05

ok well i wanted to fix the back up as the longest layer hadn´t been touched so was needing a bit of equalling up with the rest. I tried doing a ponytail on the crown but it´s looking a bit blunt and, what´s more, slightly uneven. am a bit worried about trying again now. i don´t want it to look square, more rounded like you normally get. eek. any advice?

pluckingupcourage · 11/02/2012 20:10

Right, am off to try this tomorrow. My neighbours (just arrived for dinner) want to know if this will work on their DS's surfer dude long hair ...? or is it not good for male hair?

AllPastYears · 11/02/2012 20:52

ohdarcy, I had the same thing. Tried a crown pony tail after doing the forehead one, but I've now got layers down the back that I didn't really want, and not much off the length. The layers I can live with, but the bottom layers are too long, I need a couple of inches off to balance out the top (which, as my DD says, is a bit "puffy"...)

I suppose I could try the ponytail-at-the-nape, but might wait till I've washed it and see how it looks before braving a 3rd cut.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 11/02/2012 20:57

I did it, it was not good! I am off to the hairdressers on Tuesday to get it thinned out and sorted out.
The sides of my head have a one inch difference in lengths. I really wanted to be good at it to save my money Grin

McTemp · 11/02/2012 22:17

If anyone is still keeping track of the number of women who have done it- you can add me to it too! Had very long almost waist length hair, so did nape-of-the-neck trick first to take off length, and then did snippy snippy stabby stabby, and I'm so pleased!

It feels so much lighter, and the layers look lovely! Thanks Psammead!

mrsalwaysawake · 11/02/2012 23:33

Moroccan oil?

Ixia · 12/02/2012 01:28

Argh, shored up by a stiff drink, I thought a haircut might be a good idea. Nope after 3 attempts I have shorter layers on one side, irritatingly short, they won't stay in a ponytail. There's also a sort of bulky bit at the back. Will see how it washes.....I daren't cut off anymore, incase I end up scalped.

toomanyeasterbunnies · 12/02/2012 03:34

Damn insomnia! I read this and got the sudden urge to try. Have bob length curly hair. Now think one side is a bit shorter than other. Will have to double-check in daylight!

LoveInAColdClimate · 12/02/2012 08:09

Ok, I am going to try this! I am due for a haircut a week tomorrow so I think I'll do it later in the week so if it's a disaster the hairdresser can sort it out Grin.

cosysocks · 12/02/2012 08:55

My sis and nieces came around when I was doing mine last night, therefore I can add mine, my sis and 10 DN and 14 DN. Just took small amount off but looks fab. I think I got a bit snip happy on my hair and the layers are quite 'choppy' but if I hate it I can do it again as I only took small amount off. Love the fact I was going to the hairdressers to get a trim this week.

Hi I watched this thread last night , have just unicorned and cut about 6 inches off. Dd 5 started crying and dd1 said I had to stop as I would look ugly. As I then took my hair out of bobble and shook they are quite relieved and I look even more beautiful apprently. So cheers brill thanks for the best thread ever.

lucjam · 12/02/2012 09:28

Just did it on DD age 9, hmmm its a bit odd, have offered to take her to hairdresser this week, was going to go anyway but thought this may save some pennies. She cried a bit then laughed a lot, 15 mins on shes still combing it and looking in the mirror. Blush Seems like I'm the only one out there that can't do it. I did however do DH hair yesterday with clippers and its fine, but I've been doing it for a few years so have had practice!

2gorgeousboys · 12/02/2012 09:31

Cosysocks I just read your post as 10 DNieces and 14 DNephews Blush until I reread and saw you mentioned just your sister and nieces coming round [double blush].

EverythingsNotRosie · 12/02/2012 09:34

I've just done mine... It's a bit asymmetrical but looks like that was what I was going for... I hope... Much cheaper than the 40 pounds I was going to spend!

scottishmummy · 12/02/2012 10:51

cut my own hair?
no way
christ its too mumsy and martyred
my mum used to cut my hair when i was a wean - various lopsided disasters.i vowed from then to always go hairdresser.my kids go hairdresser i dont do their hair

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 12/02/2012 11:07

why is it Mumsy SM? My hair looks just like the style I would usually pay £40 at the hairdressers (plus tip!) and it's cost me sod all.

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 12/02/2012 11:09

coconutty does the colour go flat at all?
