I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

NO! Just pure awe!

ohdarcy · 10/02/2012 20:17

haha i meant fringe to just below my eyebrows..

ViviPru · 10/02/2012 20:19

Frownie's hairy offcuts are hysterical Grin

frownieface · 10/02/2012 20:29

Wha? Blush

mrsalwaysawake · 10/02/2012 20:30

Ooh, don't think I've ever inspired awe before.

I will be scrutinising the hair of any and all women I encounter in the next few days to see if I can spot any hair-do-alikes.

AllPastYears · 10/02/2012 20:35

Right, I'm back. That must be my quickest haircut ever Grin. Certainly my cheapest!

So I'd washed my hair earlier, and dried it but not straightened it. Did the MN haircut with pony tail a couple of inches back from forehead, lopped it to maybe 3" and did the stabby thing. The longest bits of hair in the bin were about 6" ShockGrin. On releasing the pony tail my wavy hair was in a bit of a 1980 lion cut Confused and couldn't figure out where the 6" pieces had come from Confused but I guess they are now layers. (Have checked for bald patches!) I've straightened it a bit and it looks more 2012 now.

Next stage - will anyone notice? Grin (And what will they say if they do!)

Lulz a squirrel, I have had a few Wine's so am trying to find out how to turn on my built in webcam, I will take a photo of the end result Grin

bluebump · 10/02/2012 20:43

I need to do the MN haircut again, I think I have photos on my profile from when I made my mum do it the first time. I'm braver now and do it myself Grin

StandingAlone · 10/02/2012 20:45

Omgomgomgomgomg I've just done it. Looks fab even DH is shocked that it looks so good after doing it myself.

DonkeyTeapot · 10/02/2012 20:48

Am on page 4.

REALLY WANT TO DO THIS.

Am going to finish reading thread first, and see how StickAForkInMe's came out :)

AllPastYears · 10/02/2012 20:48

Well my DH hasn't noticed yet...

It looks pretty good though, considering I did it myself Smile. And there are a lot of split ends in the bin!

Psammead · 10/02/2012 20:49

Well done, Standing!

I never really thought this thread would take off, tbh. Glad it has, it's been very funny!

Have you all got really long hair? I last cut my hair myself when I was 17. I have to say it looked good.

mrsalwaysawake · 10/02/2012 20:58

I usually have long hair, then get it all lopped off, let it grow out, and repeat. Mostly because I don't really like feel comfortable at the hairdresser's. I don't have to go back again now!

kennythekangaroo · 10/02/2012 21:03

You lot are a bad influence!

I've been reading the thread all evening, watched the video and attacked my head with the pointy scissors!

I've ended up with layers round my face, but not much off the length at the back which is fine though it did feel like I'd cut loads off. DH helped and was suitably impressed.

frownieface · 10/02/2012 21:03

So I have black hair and am wearing black, photo does not do justice to my beautious new haircut! one again thank you Thanks Psammead.

notveryinventive · 10/02/2012 21:17

Well Im never going to the hairdressers again. I already home dye it so now I also home cut it Grin Thanks Psammead

WonkyCatonkey · 10/02/2012 21:18

I did it! I love it! Thank you SO Psammead, I'd been putting off going to the hairdressers for weeks even though I desperately needed to go because I live overseas and language barriers mean that the last time I went I ended up looking like a bad eighties throwback Confused I am a VERY happy Catonkey :) Thank you! Thanks (no photos though, people may of just eaten or want to sleep tonight Grin )

Ok so I read this thread crying with laughter and then marched upstairs brandishing some scissors...

So I cut as the video and the sides and fringey bits looked good so I then put in ponytail at the very back of my head and trimmed a couple of inches of the length as well.

Looks ok but Im going to colour tomorrow and blowdry and see what the finished result looks like. My hair is curly, so any wonky bits will not be too noticeable.

bebejones · 10/02/2012 22:12

I'd seen this pontail cutting thing a while back (probably on MN) and I've been trying to build up the courage to do it! My hair's in desperate need of a cut...it's been a while!

I should just do it shouldn't I?!

Maybe tomorrow...

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 22:16

I'll be making mine shorter tomorrow. Currently too pissed had a bottle glass of wine so any hair cutting would be a bad plan.

DonkeyTeapot · 10/02/2012 22:47

This has got to be the most exciting thread ever, and among the funniest - am crying laughing at I do quite like coconuts but not as a hairstyle!!!

I am definitely going to try this, but it might not be tonight, I might do the pony tail and see how much it looks like I could take off. Been pondering new hair, this seems like as good a plan as any!

LadyWellian · 10/02/2012 22:49

Someone was interested in my 'nape of the neck bob' method (I love it that it has earned its own inverted commas) so I paste it in full for your pleasure/use/shouting 'that's not the MN haircut'. Please note the bit about being curly - I am not promising you Louise Brooks.

I couldn't get my head round the idea of cutting off my hair while it was at the top/front (I wasn't convinced the layers would be in the right place) but I did cut my own hair last autumn by doing a dead straight centre parting, pulling it into a ponytail at the nape of my neck and cutting it off there. Was a bit nervewracking as there was quite a lot of hair and I was looking in the mirror so it was hard to point the scissors in the right direction, but it turned out as a quite serviceable jaw-length bob, a bit shorter at the back like a bob should be.

I was very pleased and would do it again except I'm not sure it's grown enough yet.

My hair is curly though, which hides a multitude of sins.

I have a bit of a fear of hairdressers after years and years of DD's nits. She doesn't get them very often now but I'm still paranoid.
