I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

I did it too with the kitchen scissors. Not sure if they would have been sharp enough, but I just thought why not. My length appears to still be the same, but DH hacked loads off (though my hair is stupidly thick) so I think it is a good few inches shorter at the back. It took all of 2 minutes to do it, def better than going to the hairdressers Grin

Bunsouttheoven · 10/02/2012 18:43

Haven't done it yet. Is it insanity?

what coconutty said - mine needs a trim anyway. its usually curly but havent washed it for a few days (am ill - honest) so it's a bit straighter, might do it tonight.

when did i become so feeble and start following a bunch of women off the internet

stares at mn scarf and bbh

boredandrestless · 10/02/2012 18:59

My hair is too short to cut like this now as it's in a short bob but I used to do this a few years back (surely it's not been 4 years since it was posted?!?! Shock ), anyway I used to love the result and was often complimented on it, and it does save a fortune in hairdresser costs. I hate going to the hairdressers!

ViviPru · 10/02/2012 19:01

Coconutty, your username is filling me with fear as an adjective in the context of this thread Confused

Chubfuddler · 10/02/2012 19:12

I don't think my hair is long enough, it don't all go up in a forehead height pony tail. The back 1/3 falls down. Will have to let hair grow out a bit then try it.

mrsalwaysawake · 10/02/2012 19:26

chub, you could try just cutting the bit that does go up?
(wtf? Am now encouraging haircut experimentation, having discovered the method all of 3 hours ago!)

FoofFighter · 10/02/2012 19:27

2 pony tails then chubfuddler

ViviPru · 10/02/2012 19:27

You're a true maverick, mrsalwaysawake.

HappyHippyChick · 10/02/2012 19:30

I'm seriously tempted but don't really want a fringe, do you think I should do my ponytail more on the top of my head?

mrsalwaysawake · 10/02/2012 19:33

Sarcasm, ViviPru?!

Chubfuddler · 10/02/2012 19:35

It's tempting. That side sweep with layers in the vid is kind of how my hair is now, but mines shorter than hers. My husband is out and I have wine. However the possibility of ending up with caedfel's haircut is a strong dissuading factor I have to say.

Would someone else with a grown out chin length bob like to have a go first?

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 10/02/2012 19:37

I'm really tempted to, Chubfuddler. Grin

Psammead · 10/02/2012 19:42

HappyHippy - no! You might end upwith a really 'deep' fringe! Just don't cut much off - leave the right amount so that it will reach to your jawline when the ponytail is taken out.

Too late, coconutty. Have already done it. Like others, haven't lost much length but it looks nice at the front round my face. I need to do more though as I would prefer it to look more fringe-y. (Have never had a fringe before).

Chubfuddler · 10/02/2012 19:51

How much did you take off?

HappyHippyChick · 10/02/2012 19:53

Ok, I'll abandon that cunning plan and just go for the front of head ponytail approach later when kids are in bed.

Gah - mn has far too much influence on me!! Although it would be nice to save money for once

frownieface · 10/02/2012 20:10

I have put a pic of how much I took off on my profile it should be public.

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 20:11

About 3 inches. Just did 1.5 first then another 1.5 when it didn't look any different. It's a bit wavy though from having been up in a ponytail all day, so I think I need to straighten it first next time, or not put it in a ponytail before droing it.

ohdarcy · 10/02/2012 20:12

I just totally lurked through this thread, laughed so much I cried and then did the haircut. result! i didn´t take off much, maybe 1.5 inches? like everyone else the overall length doesn´t seem much changed but i know I´ve got rid of split ends, freshened it up, some nice layers around the face and let´s be honest, it´s all the hairdresser takes off anyway in a trim so - quids in!

i already have a blunt fridge just below my eyes (straight across) so was confused about that. If I cut as long as my current fringe is, I can´t quite understand how it would look.

Now, can someone give me good advice about topping up my own highlights for real savings? last time i did it ( a looong time ago) it used to be quite orangey...

Pixel · 10/02/2012 20:12

Just watched the video and everyone doing the choppy/stabby thing had their hand between the hair/scissors and the camera. Now I get the gist but I'd have liked to have seen it with my own eyes. Could they not have faced the model/victim round the other way found a left-handed hairdresser?

This sounds too good to be true (checks date), I will join in the demands for photos!

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 20:14

I am fully expecting to go to work on Monday and see loads of folk with strangely similar new haircuts.

AllPastYears · 10/02/2012 20:15

OK, I'm off to get the scissors Grin. Not doing photos though, that would be a step too far! Agree about the video, the stabby bit was completely hidden Hmm.

Haven't had a haircut since May for a little while, so what have I got to lose?
