How do I use my GHD's to make loose waves?

I have tried and failed.

My hair length isn't the problem, I just don't have the knack.

Any tips appreciated.

I second Tatty on the Root Boost thingy. Even my fine hair is boosted significantly. The results are even noticeable the next day.
