How do I use my GHD's to make loose waves?

I have tried and failed.

My hair length isn't the problem, I just don't have the knack.

Any tips appreciated.

That's it, I'm going upstairs to give it a go!

Take that, Dsis Grin!

jamaisjedors · 16/06/2011 08:28

Tatty you are the GHD guru! Grin

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/06/2011 11:18

Sorry, I had to post and run yesterday.

Thank you Tatty, you are the guru. I'm now off to watch the tutorial.

I am sick of poker straight and want romantic loose curls!

Tatty with all that colouring and stripping of colours how do you get your hair so shiny! Envy envious emoticon!

TattyDevine · 16/06/2011 16:25

LadyintheRadiator - yes, in theory you could do that. A GHD manouvre can override a GHD manouvre as long as the hair has cooled down. However, you'd be double-processing it, and in theory if GHD's can tame your haywire hair by straightening then they should be able to both tame and curl at the same time. You would probably have to pull them through quite slowly, but it is essentially the same action as straightening but putting the hair on an angle, the hair will still be passing through the plates so in theory this should give you sleek shiny curls/waves. I have very well behaved sleek hair though, so I haven't tried it.

Thanks KatMiddledonsMum - its in pretty good condition considering. And I had a whole head of bleach highlights "in between" the bottom picture and the top picture as I was "blonde" (ish) for a while in the spring. Haha. Tsk tsk.

I use Ojon Restorative hair treatment if my hair feels dry, I use Moroccan Oil daily and I also use the GHD Remedy Cream if its feeling a bit processed. After a week or so of using the Remedy cream (you put that on wet hair after you wash it) it seems to recover.

I am going to give it a break for a while and only do my roots unless my colour really fades, in which case I'll run it through at the end of a dying session one day for 15 minutes but I think its good to give it a break sometimes. No more major colour changes or stripping though. I'm over the blonde thing, I'm over the red thing, I'm a lighter brown than I used to be, I can alter the tone slightly with shampoos.

I did have the Loreal Fibreceutic salon treatment when I went for my last cut, but to be honest I didn't notice any massive difference after that, I noticed more of a difference after I did an Ojon treatment on it a week later but it might have done something I suppose, to make the Ojon work better...

TattyDevine, I don't think I'm doing it right Sad. The 1st section looked okay, but the next ones didn't.

DSis is visiting tomorrow, so I might get her to have a bash...

TattyDevine · 16/06/2011 17:27

It does take practice, practice, practice.

If you did one section that looked right, you can learn to do it so all of them do.

Keep at it!

AchtungBaby · 16/06/2011 17:32

Oh dear Confused.

Also, is my hair long enough? I mean, how long is long enough? It's cut in a graduated bob, from shoulder length at the back to longer at the front. I suspect that it's too short at the back at the moment, but long enough at the front Grin.

Hmmm... well I tried after following all advice on here and watching the video. I can't do it! I did the crocodile move and everything, but it just leaves a bit of a kink in the end Confused

I won't let this beat me!

RichTeaAreCrap · 16/06/2011 22:11

Oh fab, I am going to try and do this. Tatty, do you section your hair and do the underneath of it first and then move on to the top sections of hair?

KateMiddletonsMum · 16/06/2011 23:31

I've been trying for 90 minutes now :( I just look like I have "messed up" hair like I just got outta bed. :(
Ok, am I pulling smoothly through my hair or kinda jerky and am I squeezing plates together hard or soft? I've got big flat plate ghd's and hair past shoulders.
Ta Tatty!

TattyDevine · 17/06/2011 07:45

I section my hair off and do the under layers first but I would recommend "practising" on your topmost layer at first.

You pull it through slowly and smoothly, you dont squeeze the plates together really tight but you don't have it too loose either.

Practice on a top section. Give yourself a middle or side parting. The GHD's as you clamp them to the top of the hair section near the scalp should be parellell to the parting. You then turn them one half turn in towards your scalp, holding the rest of the hair section loosely in the other hand, before gently and slowly gliding them down towards the end.

If a half turn is not working for you and confusing you, you can do a full turn so the hair is wrapped once around the GHD as you bring it down. This shouldn't really make much difference to the end curl, and might just be easier to visualise and guide down.

TattyDevine · 17/06/2011 07:47

Achtung - I think your hair is probably long enough. My friend does it as she is growing out her bob and it just helps her get through that in betweeny stage.

TattyDevine · 17/06/2011 12:55

I might regret this but I've recorded an instructional video!!! I uploaded it onto YouTube but the audio synchronisation was out of whack so I've converted the file to an AVI file and its uploading again but its taking a while because its now 64 megabytes now its an .avi - no idea why.

So if I'm feeling brave later I might post the link Blush

I'm sure it wont be any better than the ones on the GHD site really but at least I can demonstrate what I've been explaining in words...

bananamonkey · 17/06/2011 13:07

KateMiddletonsMum do you have the wide plate GHDs? I am not sure if it would work with those. My straighteners (not GHDs but similar) are only about 1 1/2 inches wide. It is exactly like curling ribbon with scissors.

The problem I have is that the curls don't last the day, no matter how much hairspray I use Sad Stupid fine, flat useless hair, any tips please?

AchtungBaby · 17/06/2011 13:28

Ooh TattyDevine, that sounds great.

Then we can all video ourselves doing it badly, and you can tell us off what we're doing wrong Grin.

TattyDevine · 17/06/2011 13:31

Bananamonkey, what brand of straighteners do you have, and how hot are they? What is their maximum temperature?

izzybiz · 17/06/2011 13:45

I have really fine flat hair and I use my straighteners for curls all the time.
I did my own hair for my wedding day too, extra curly! (Pic in profile)
I find if I curl freshly washed hair the curls dont take as well, so if I want to curl for a night out I wash my hair in the morning, then when evening comes I spray a bit of dry shampoo through my hair before curling.

I seperate my hair and do a bottom layer first then give a light spray of hair spray. I then do the top layer and spray again.
By this time I look a bit like one of those dolls with the ringlet hair!
I then tip my head upside down and seperate the curls with my fingers gently.

I then tip my head back up and do a few defining curls around the top again, then spray the whole lot with a load of hair spray!

I find that lasts till I wash it, HTH Smile

izzybiz · 17/06/2011 13:46

I have the Babyliss pro 230's, have tried curls with SIL GHD's and found them too slippy for me!

McTemp · 17/06/2011 14:14

I use my straightners all the time to curl my hair, but my curls are always far too tight! I am desperate to see your video Tatty to see what I am doing wrong!!

KateMiddletonsMum · 17/06/2011 16:53

tatty video video video video video video video video video video video video video video video video video video please!

TattyDevine · 17/06/2011 17:53

Right, I've done it. Sorry for the delay but I was getting lip-sync problems and it was very distracting. Converted it to a .mov format and its sorted.

So without further ado...

I may live to regret this! I look a right tit! Grin

How fantastic! I've never managed to do that. Weekend sorted now Grin
