Classic Chanel bag

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:09

I have a 'big' birthday approaching and have always wanted a classic quilted Chanel bag with chain / leather handles. DH has offered to get me one and has set aside 2k.

Will this cover it, and can anyone remember what the style is called (I seem to remmeber it's a series of numbers - is it 2.55)?

no it won't

they aren't very nice really - had their moment in the sun in the 80s and are having a brief revival because kate moss slung one over her shoulder 18 months ago but you'll spend a fortune on it and in a couple of years you'll wonder why you did. And everyone will think it is a knock off from hong kong.

Bleargh.

go to fendi and get a cheaper, better made, bag of beautiful leather that you can enjoy for years.

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:13

Oh. Do you know how much they are?

I think I would enjoy Chanel bag for years. And it is also leather..? We have different tastes I suppose.

It is 2.55 I think yes.

I think they're perfection OP, I really do.

I don't give a chuff if someone else thinks it's a fake, I buy real things for me and I think it would give you real joy.

I'm immensely envious of you to have such a great DP!

Not sure of cost - will be back!

londonone · 21/03/2011 14:21

Starting price is 1200 or so. However unless the rest of your wardrobe/jewellery is top end, people will assume it;s a fake. Depends why you want it?

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:22

Thanks style not fashion.

London one - I want it because I like the style.

Why does anyone want anything?

OP posts:
stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 14:24

sigh...so classy

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:27

I am not sure what you mean by top end. I think the bag would co-ordinate with the rest of my wardrobe, otherwise I wouldn't consider it.

My jewellery is minimal - diamond studs, cartier watch. I buy most of my clothes from White Company, Jigsaw, Peter Jones, also like Day Birger et Mikkelson and Alberta Feretti. I don't have any clothes from Chanel but that shouldn't matter should it?

OP posts:
eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:27

Thanks Style! The 2k should cover it then.

OP posts:
londonone · 21/03/2011 14:28

If it is just the style you want then there are hundreds of similar bags that are less than 1000, but if it's the label then that is slightly different.

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 14:29

I'm afraid I'm another who'd assume your 2.55 was a fake. There's something desperate about so much branding - I never think people with Chanel/LV/Dior emblazoned across their possessions are fashion fabulous, I assume they are incredibly insecure about their style and social status.

If you want a luxe bag in that price range, I'd look at Bottega Veneta or some of the more discreet Tod's bags. I'd also investigate some of the more stealth English brands such as Tanner Krolle or Pickett (both of whom do bespoke bags).

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 14:30

No no the rest of you aren't getting it!

It's a Chanel classic! It's...it's...perfection.

Say no more!

(Is it just you & me with this then OP? Hmm)

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:30

Well, I think it's a combination of style and designer surely LondonOne. With something which was created by Chanel, it's iconic and linked to that brand. Besides, the other styles would, essentially, be 'fakes' surely?

OP posts:
eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:31

Couldn't have put it better Style. I'm glad there's at least one other person on the same planet as me.

OP posts:
eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:32

But the branding is very discreet? It's not as if I am coveting a LV grafitti bag, or even the damier, which I agree is slightly desperate / ridiculous.

OP posts:
stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 14:33

It's genuinely (!) the one material possession I covet above all else.

It's classic, it's Grace Kelly/Audrey Hepburn, it's Paris...it's being a woman. In a bag.

Sigh......

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:35

Yes I agree StyleNotFashion! I would say it is timeless and discreet, something which I will be able to use well into (fast approaching!) old age.

OP posts:
eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:37

But then, I have always been a 70 year old in a year old's body.

OP posts:
londonone · 21/03/2011 14:43

I guess for me, if you are going to buy something designer it should have an originality of design that is not available on the high street, hence why uou pay more. The 2.55 was fresh and original when it was designed, now it is a design that is available all olver the high street, so therefore it is the label you are paying for rather than the design.

Not necessarily a bad thing, it's the reason I can decide on chanel perfume rather than jordan's perfume without even smelling them!

Alouiseg · 21/03/2011 14:45

I adore classic Chanel bags. The leather is so fine though, especially the lambskin that I would be inclined to invest in a smaller evening bag, that won't get the everyday bashing that a day bag will.

If you do go for a day bag though I'd go for calves leather over lambskin.

Happy Shopping

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:47

It is a day bag I'd like Alouiseg, so thanks for that.

SofaQueen · 21/03/2011 14:50

The 2.55 is the classic flap with the Mademoiselle clasp (so no CCs and very discreet).

Definitely get one! I have several - one given to me by my mum which she used back in the 80s and they definitely are style over trend. There is no way you would look at a real one and think fake! Your budget should be fine, but the jumbo size is a bit more than 2k right now, and the medium is just about 2k.

It is THE original and worth every penny. Who cares if there are a bunch of knock offs around - none will hold a candle to the real thing, just an aspiration to be.

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:51

Thanks SofaQueen. Do you know the size/width of the medium version?

OP posts:
stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 14:53

my faith is restored!

Skimummy · 21/03/2011 14:53

I can't believe the 2.55 is getting a bashing on here! I am definitely in the classic camp. Although agree that Bottega Veneta (in particular) and some Tod bags are classic as well. Not sure about Fendi...
