Classic Chanel bag

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 14:09

I have a 'big' birthday approaching and have always wanted a classic quilted Chanel bag with chain / leather handles. DH has offered to get me one and has set aside 2k.

Will this cover it, and can anyone remember what the style is called (I seem to remmeber it's a series of numbers - is it 2.55)?

If you want one, then get one. But the fact that you have posted on the net about it suggests it is about what other people think as much as what you want and as some people have said the 2.55 may well be assumed to be a fake.

After all if you just wanted the price, surely you would google "chanel 2.55 price! rather than start a thread on MN!

eggsaremysaviour · 21/03/2011 15:11

Londonone- I dont't think the Chanel site lists prices. Surely I'm allowed to post here to ask someone who may already have one?

What other people think wouldn't influence my decsion one way or another. I know what I like and am sure of my own taste.

I must admit it was surprising that on a 'style' forum, there seems to be a lack of appreciation of what is generally regarded to be a classic and stylish item though.

I suppose the other reason for posting was the wish (naively maybe) to share some of my anticipation and enjoyment with others who also like the bag.

Sorry OP, didn't mean to piss on your bonfire :(

If you are going to love it, then get it. Style is so personal, sorry for being negative.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 15:53

Chanel site doesn't have prices (if you have to ask, you can't afford it as they say).

OP you were right to post here - you've received some good advice re:leather from other posters & I've enjoyed sqooning with you thinking about it.

Style is personal, ain't that the truth, but I agree I find it disheartening to have an absolute classic ripped into. Perhaps some people shouldn't be on the style thread at all...?

Shame a thread that should have been full of cooing and oohing has been attacked instead jealousy is so ugly

otchayaniye · 21/03/2011 15:54

I bought a large 2.55 in Las Vegas (was drunk, had won on blackjack, am a mug) but don't regret it. Had always wanted one. Don't much care if people think it's mumsy/unfashionable/fake.

Cost me three years ago 2.5k in uk money. Allow at least 2.7 though as I think prices have gone up.

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 15:55

I agree with Londonone, it's not my cup of tea but if it's yours and you won't regret the spend, get it.

I do often see the 2.55 in dress agencies, so might be worth a try before you shell out full price brand new.

If you can be persuaded down the discreet luxury route, another brand that you may like to explore is J&M Davidson. Valextra is another.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 15:57

The Chanel 2.55 is discreet. No clanging C's at all.

I despair!

otchayaniye · 21/03/2011 15:59

I second J&M and Delvaux, maybe a plain Bottega? - although J&M is mid-level, I'd say. Not a lifetime heirloom bag.

One thing, the leather isn't hardy. This isn't a bag that will take a pounding. More for getting in and out of taxis and into restaurants. Mind you, this is from a woman who ruined her Bottega bag using it as a nappy bag.

I love my 2.55. Will pass on to my daughter. Reminds me of an utterly nihilistic pissed up weekend doing something so utterly pointless as to win $$$ and spunk it all on ridiculous leather goods.

I wasn't a parent then!

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 16:00

It's not just the logo, stylenotfashion It's the style and its sheer ubiquity. It's the other women who have them. It's the celebrities who tote them. All of these devalue a brand.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 16:03

I don't think a 2.55 has been devalued, I think it epitomises class & discreet wealth.

An authentic 2.55 is a headturner, not a chav-attracter.

OP please say you haven't been put off!

otchayaniye · 21/03/2011 16:03

Depends how you wear it and what you wear it with. You could say that about any bag. While I am not a fan of 'It' bags per se, this is a design classic, whoever happens to be carrying one now.

I wouldn't dream of coming on a thread about Uggs saying what I think of them.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 16:06

Exactly otch why do people join a thread just to criticise the OP's taste?

I don't understand it.

To start a comment with "Well it's not my taste but if it's yours..." is just so rude.

So rude. So patronising.

Woemn can be so nasty :(

HalfTermHero · 21/03/2011 16:09

Agree that a 2.55 is 100% a stylish and good choice. Make sure you get a black one!

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 16:10

Hey ho, the mumsnet special again.

Don't post asking for advice if you don't want to hear it.

My most basic fashion rule is, if a footballer's wife or a popstar has one, it's definitely fallen victim to the naff factor.

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 16:11

Oh yes, and hot mess du jour Lindsay Lohan is the other style kiss of death.

HalfTermHero · 21/03/2011 16:12

If this thread had been about a £10 Primark bag then the replies would have been politer I am sure. I am really not sure why people see an expensive item being considered then feel free to declare open season on unwarranted rudeness!

MrsMc82 · 21/03/2011 16:13

I'm excited for you eggs and a bit Envy of course!! If I won the lottery the first th thing I'd but would be a chanel quilted bag or 3!!! A nice big shopper like this for everyday, a 2.55 and also a wallet on a chain .... [Daydreams.....]

Its a classic and beautiful and think that anyone who love their luxe bags would think the same......

And your right that the chanel site doesn't have prices on there

If you want to chat to people solely about a bag try the purse forum (I think regulars on there are slightly nutty to talk about bags non stop but its great if you want to have lots of people do a virtual "eeeeeeeeeeeee" for you at the prospect of your purchase....... Tho of course it seems that there might be a few of us on S&B that will do that too!!!!)

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 16:13

jealousy?

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 16:16

Stylenotfashion As you can see, most people who've expressed doubts have also suggested alternatives.

Doesn't sound like jealousy to me.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 16:17

Theres a purse forum??

Where?!

Is there less jealousy "opinions" there?

otchayaniye · 21/03/2011 16:17

thomasbodley The OP posted to ask how much these cost and what the style was called. She didn't ask for the style jury to give their penny's worth.

There are certain things that are timeless, despite whether they are du jour. You could certainly make a case for storing a 2.55 for a couple of years, but not to buy one if you like it because a few unstylish people happen to have one, well, that's about as sheep like as what you are criticizing in the first place.

Cream silk shirts, Chanel jackets, YSL tuxedos, long strings of pearls, blue jeans, breton tops, cigarette pants, black shift dresses etc etc. I'm sure Lindsay Lohan has all of those somewhere in her closet. Doesn't mean that a person with style, individuality and good carriage can't carry a popular item off without it looking tragic.

It is just a handbag after all. Not a personal manifesto.

stylenotfashion · 21/03/2011 16:19

nods in agreement with otch

thomasbodley · 21/03/2011 16:19

You can google the price, Otch.

otchayaniye · 21/03/2011 16:20

There is always a sensitive and polite way to put your view across about alternatives, or that something might be ubiquitous.

And then there's the very rude way.
