What's the "cool mum style" where you live?

I have a friend who lives in a larger city and it's all about the yummy mummy/WAG (everyone's got a fake tan and an uber expensive handbag) thing and another friend who swears everyone she knows is decked out in the boho look (long dresses, funky jewelry, etc.). Here everyone's wearing NF jackets and expensive jeans and Keens. It's "the thing" to look as if you just got back from a brisk hike (or possibly are on your way to one. :)) Everything must be understated (highlights, jewelry, makeup.)

So, what's it like where you are? Just idle curiousity. :)

Might be the wrong time to ask this. Is there any school in the UK that isn't all about the coat atm?

Coats here ere towards ski-fantasy.

I have coat-envy. Winter-denial is so strongly embedded in me that I can't quite bring myself to buy a duvet-style thing. However chic it claims to be.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 04/12/2010 20:02

I'm with you there, animula. However, have been wearing an actual ski jacket this week Blush, so it may be time to take the plunge and go for the duvet look.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 04/12/2010 20:04

Just googled Keens - my God they're gopping!

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:05

I live in Minnesota and there's just no denying winter. It's already below zero here with a couple feet of snow, so it's all about coats, mittens, and boots right now too, and will be until March or so. :)

What are NF jackets and Keens?

School style very individual - rather like any workplace really.

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:06

What's gopping mean, hideous? :)

Do you mean trendy, or actually cool?

orienteerer · 04/12/2010 20:08

Just googled NF jackets & Keens and I'm none the wiserConfused

Dexterrocks · 04/12/2010 20:09

The look here is very Fat Face or Whitestuff or Boden with gilet/body warmers, patterned birkenstocks in summer. No make up or very minimal, no fake tans, simple jewellery. 99% jeans.

piratecatClaus · 04/12/2010 20:10

ME i AM the cool mum round here Wink

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2010 20:10

Vintage fur coats, leggings and short cowboy boots.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 04/12/2010 20:10

Uggs all round here Smile

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:10

I suppose trendy. I just think it's amusing how one thing is the item to get in one part of the country and completely undesirable in another.

People round here go round in their Jammies.

And sadly, im not joking.

animula · 04/12/2010 20:11

NF = North Face.

Very warm.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 04/12/2010 20:13

Ha! I worked it out as Nicole Fahri - didn't think it quite went with the Keens though Smile.

DooinMeCleanin · 04/12/2010 20:13

Mini skirts or skin tight jeans or leggings, ridiculous shoes that you would break your ankle in on this ice, but they still wear them, and either highlighted or jet black hair straightened to within an inch of it's life or pulled back into an essex style pontail with waaay to much gel. Too much orange make up, fake tan and mascara.

I'm glad I'm not an uber mummy.

animula · 04/12/2010 20:14

Tethers - you E. Londoners are leading the country back to fur, you know.

i saw the demo outside the vintage place behind M and S the other day, and felt all studenty again. and then terribly compromised, since I was sitting watching, with a latte in my hand. Blush

nameymcnamechange · 04/12/2010 20:14

Here in fairly middle class London it is Boden, Fly London boots, Converse or Vans in summer, Monsoon, White Stuff, Gap, Karen Millen, Phase 8, North Face parkas, Hunter wellies - absolutely typical, predictable, middle income middle aged Mummy stuff.

I have never seen anyone out during the daytime in pyjamas and a little bit of me still doesn't believe this actually happens.

southeastastra · 04/12/2010 20:15

we don't have 'cool' mums thank the lord

orienteerer · 04/12/2010 20:16

Google first hit is not North Face

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:18

pastaplease · 04/12/2010 20:19
