What's the "cool mum style" where you live?

I have a friend who lives in a larger city and it's all about the yummy mummy/WAG (everyone's got a fake tan and an uber expensive handbag) thing and another friend who swears everyone she knows is decked out in the boho look (long dresses, funky jewelry, etc.). Here everyone's wearing NF jackets and expensive jeans and Keens. It's "the thing" to look as if you just got back from a brisk hike (or possibly are on your way to one. :)) Everything must be understated (highlights, jewelry, makeup.)

So, what's it like where you are? Just idle curiousity. :)

We are Chav city here.

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:20

They are nice, orinteerer! And even though the "cool mom" stuff it bollocks and I know it, I'm grateful that the "style" where I live is comfortable. And, you know, that I can walk around in it. :)

There are a lot of vintage styled Mums here....original 50s frocks and mad vintagey hair-dos.

WastingAway · 04/12/2010 20:21

I'd love a proper fur coat. No different to wearing leather imo.

Most of the mothers I see at toddler groups are pretty generic, but there are some proper yummies at the music class I take DS to. One has that fashionable grey-dyed hair. Rather posh for Doncaster.
It's mostly chav-posh round here I guess. Race week being top cultcha!

orienteerer · 04/12/2010 20:21

CheerfulYank I feel so much more trendy now as I actually do the school run in NF boots

pastaplease · 04/12/2010 20:22

Angry @ WastingAway

WastingAway · 04/12/2010 20:23

How is it different to leather?

pastaplease · 04/12/2010 20:25

I wouldn't wear leather.

As far as I know, cows aren't skinned alive for leather though.

...and yes, animals frequently are for their fur.

nameymcnamechange · 04/12/2010 20:26

Leather is a by-product of the meat industry.

Fur is fur for fur's sake.

essenceofSES · 04/12/2010 20:27

CheerfulYank - thanks for the links as I had no idea what you meant! Looks nice stuff but more "warm mum" than "cool mum"!

Tbh, for me, wearing whatever makes me feel good and feel confident makes me feel cool. Not all clothes suit all shapes and being able to feel great in what you wear really shows and make you cook ITKWIM.

animula · 04/12/2010 20:27

Stop! Stop!

I realise I'm complicit, and I worried when I pressed "post" - but this is Cheerful Yank's thread.

If we want this debate (and actually, I thought about starting a vintage fur thread the other day, having watched the demo), I do think we should set it up in it's own right. Rather than taking over Ms Yank's cheery one.

Pleeeeease.

pastaplease · 04/12/2010 20:27

Actually, according to this cows in India and China are also skinned while conscious.

It's all bad.

pastaplease · 04/12/2010 20:28

Agreed, animula!

WastingAway · 04/12/2010 20:29

TBF, I don't know how they produce either.

Man-made materials for clothing and footwear are generally made from plastics and therefore don't break down, they also don't last as long and aren't as warm.

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:30

So...on the subject of style....

OP posts:
WastingAway · 04/12/2010 20:30

Oh yes agreed, x-posted.

eshermummy · 04/12/2010 20:38

Envy at Shanahan
We don't have a single vintage mum or goth or even a proper bloody hippy (well, not so as I've seen) at our school. Is hard to generalise but most mums are in either a yummy youngy mummy mix of skinnies, uggs/biker boots/ankle boots, cashmere sweaters and puffas or a ymmy older mummy more hotchpotchy boden, fatface, fly boots sort of get up.
Although it's not my thing to wear personally, I would love to have my morning brightened by a few mummies in 40's/50's vintage with those wartime hairdo's all rolled up at the front. So glamourous. And the make-up......
Come to think of it WHY don't I do the vintage thing myself? What's not to like?

I also love a good goth Grin

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 20:44

Do it, esher, do it! One of my good friends (she's not a mum though) often does the vintage-y look just for fun, and it's lovely!

VivaLeBeaver · 04/12/2010 20:47

Most mums here seem to be in Hunters, jodhs and fleeces. I am obviousy too influenced by MN and tend to wear a Berghaus duvet jacket, jeans and Merrell boots. In the summer its White Stuff, jeans and birkies. Converse for spring/autumn. I think I am an unoriginal fashion sheep.

furrybootsnotjandals · 04/12/2010 20:54

Where we used to live I regularly saw people doing their shopping in PJs or nipping to the corner shop in their dressing gowns/slippers and noone would blink an eye........but then I was living in Hamilton NZ Grin

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2010 21:00

Oooops. Sorry I brought it up Blush

I'll get my vintage fur coat.

littledolly · 04/12/2010 21:01

I used to drive through a certain area of Belfast and it was more usual to see women going to the shop in their PJs, dressing gown and slippers, than in 'outdoor' clothes! It was big news here when one of the big national supermarkets banned people in nightwear!

On the point of the post though, I am not really sure that there is a clear style here - it's certainly not most of the things mentioned! I suppose there are alot of leggings and skinny jeans with boots about, but aside from that, nothing specific (lots of people I know have never heard of Boden - saves me having to admit being addicted to checking their website with alarming frequency!)

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2010 21:05

Don't go, tether! :)

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 04/12/2010 21:06

Ha ha ha.

In the coffee shop today it was all Hunters with jeans and Barbour-esque jackets or Uggs and thick tights with knitted dresses - apart from me. I had denim mini and tan knee high boots on.

I don't think they were cool though AND they let their littlebratsdarlings run around the freaking coffee shop - grrrr.

fulltimeworkingmum · 04/12/2010 21:10

It's gilets, jeans and Uggs here. Lots of Joules, Fat Face and Boden. Obviously very typical middle class mummies. I work full time as do most of my DC's mothers - we are not stay at home types but independent women who do not like the to be called "yummy mummies"
