What's the "cool mum style" where you live?

I have a friend who lives in a larger city and it's all about the yummy mummy/WAG (everyone's got a fake tan and an uber expensive handbag) thing and another friend who swears everyone she knows is decked out in the boho look (long dresses, funky jewelry, etc.). Here everyone's wearing NF jackets and expensive jeans and Keens. It's "the thing" to look as if you just got back from a brisk hike (or possibly are on your way to one. :)) Everything must be understated (highlights, jewelry, makeup.)

So, what's it like where you are? Just idle curiousity. :)

military jacket & riding boots. I sometimes tow the line, altho am more often than not in RAB goose down gilet, long sweater to cover curves backside and long riding boots.Grin

eshermummy · 04/12/2010 21:40

FTWM - with a name like that, I would never have guessed you were not keen to disassociate youself from a SAHM Grin

IMO, the "yummy mummy" label can be applied equally to WOHM/SAHM. But, then again, I don't really see anything derogatory in its application. To me it's indicative of a particular socio/economic subset rather than anything else.

KittyFoyle · 04/12/2010 21:42

Grey tights, DM boots, tight jersey mini dresses and a big old real fur coat.

Beamur · 04/12/2010 21:44

Reckon round here its fairly laid back, not too smart, but with a boho/shabby chic, bit of Boden but not wall to wall. There are a few NF types too, but I suspect many of them are about to go for a hike...

FranSanDisco · 04/12/2010 21:46

There's two looks : Primark and a fag or Anorak and trainers. I have my own style thankfully Wink.

natto · 04/12/2010 21:46

no obviously 'cool' mums round here, phew!

fluffles · 04/12/2010 21:47

oh shit, i have a north face ski jacket which i've been wearing in the snow - didn't realise that made me a 'NF-type'!!

Beamur · 04/12/2010 21:52

Don't worry - I think I'm a sub-NF, mine is only a Rab Wink

classybint · 05/12/2010 09:04

Do Mums actually wear Keen's Really? Hmm

happilyeverafter · 05/12/2010 11:27

Defo jeans/uggs/jumper dresses round these parts.

Smallish village that's not very affluent so you don't really see many labels, 95% off uggs are cheap type with leaning ankles.

Of the more middle class mums most seem to be wearibg timberlands and bootcut jeans with a wool coat or loud printed wellies.

Mumsnut · 05/12/2010 14:47

Eshermummy - your school has the porn star mummy, no?

1944 I wonder if you live near me, leggings are mandatory in village and I saw two girls going up the road earlier in pjs, short dressing gowns and fake uggs. There is still huge snow drifts and the road is barely passable.

I'd not seen anyone wearing pyjamas out in village before but the area that I work in is very deprived and jimjams/ fake uggs or tracksuits/bare midriff/trainers are sported by the masses.

Alouiseg · 05/12/2010 20:13

Capes!

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2010 14:52

Well... I do, classybint. Blush Why?

My cousins live in Minnesota - is it true the lining of your lungs freezes if out for longer than 20mins at the height of winter? I have a aunt prone to exaggeration, so have always wondered.

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2010 16:00

It's possible I suppose. You definitely have to wear facemasks, scarves, etc. But we usually go out for at least a little while every day, unless it's negative 40 or so. :) We're tough!

satin pjs and fake uggs under badly fitting coats

classybint · 06/12/2010 16:04

Cheerful i guess they are better suited to your harsh winter?

Meggles76 · 06/12/2010 16:04

I took a careful look round the playground today. Live in an area with a wide socio economic mix and this is evident in the fashions:

There are the mums who wear jeans, leggings, fake Uggs, big knits... along with hair straightened to within an inch of its life and tattos.

There are the mums who are strictly no make up or decent hair cut... wearing straight denim jeans, fleeces, trainers and the odd bobble hat

Then there are those like me in jeans, boots, gilets, tunics etc... all courtesy of Boden, Joules, fat face and White Stuff

Very interesting Grin

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2010 16:07

Yes, they are classy. Also I think it's an "oh look, I'm active and sporty and just on my way for a quick kayak" thing which I whole heartedly buy into :o

It's usually sports gear in the morning for those not at work, then it's a random mixture of bling and heels for many of the Indian ladies, casual jeans, leggings and t-shirts and sandals for the rest of us. If it's really hot like just now then skirts and dresses all round. Some of us Boden a bit, but there is a danger we buy the same things. Smile
