I have to say that I'm a bit bewildered by the mass Primark worship that appears regularly on this site. Whenever I've been in, the place is a tip and the stuff is made from really nasty fabrics.

NomDePlume · 13/09/2005 13:41

IMO, H&M is just a good value and is better quality.

teeavee · 13/09/2005 13:42

my mate got a lovely grey cotton double=breasted military-type jacket this summer, dead cheap from primark. but you have to brace yourself, plunge in and have a good rummage, or go when you know it'll be quieter

TinyGang · 13/09/2005 13:43

When it comes to being overwhelmed with 'stuff' though I don't think anywhere beats TKMaxx. My god, I'm all for trawling for a bargain, but even I felt faint at the sheer volume of clothes all stuffed in together in that shop(admittedly not all ove the floor though) and couldn't be arsed to even start!

snafsicle · 13/09/2005 13:43

H&M's gone downhill this season though. Have never been to Primark but it does seem like the kind of place where I'd get lots of electric shocks off the clothes (she says, sitting here in New look jeans and TKMaxx top )

foxinsocks · 13/09/2005 13:44

primark is great for bargains. Part of the reason it's so cheap is because they have no assistants, no aircon, lousy presentation - but stuff like their baby vests, kid's pjs, plain T-shirts are normally 100% cotton and half the price of anywhere else. You have to pick your time to go to avoid the masses and it's certainly not way up there on 'shopping experience' but if you know what you're looking for, it's normally fine.

Fimbo · 13/09/2005 13:44

The sale assistants always look grubby.

JonesTheSteam · 13/09/2005 13:45

At least TK Maxx is organised chaos - no stuff all over the floor!!! and things pretty much in the right place - and you can get a pushchair round without bumping into other people and running over clothes!!!

foxinsocks · 13/09/2005 13:45

yes, I agree, I don't even get 5 metres in TKMaxxxxx before I'm heading back out of the door. I don't even know where to start and I never understand how they lay out the clothes (if you see what I mean)

JonesTheSteam · 13/09/2005 13:47

Don't find TK Maxx as bad as Primark. We have two out of town TK Maxx shops near where I live - usually very quiet during the week and very big and airy - whereas Primark in Cardiff a nightmare at any time of the day (unless 9.01 am!!!!!)

biglips · 13/09/2005 14:07

i went in there last week for the first time and checked it out for myself... i found some stuff were crap cheapo feel and others were actually good quality stuff.. so you just gotta find them!!

Tinker · 13/09/2005 14:10

Couldn't find anything I liked in H&M the week

Enid · 13/09/2005 14:11

I agree Primark is vile

have chatted via msn to another mnetter on this very subject

My poor sister has come to stay from London and she was so pleased to find that velvet jacket she bought 2! and they are horrible she looks like jimi hendrix but I havent the heart to say anything.

Tinker · 13/09/2005 14:16

lol at jimi hendrix. they look incredibly silly. and everyone will know it's that jacket.

nutcracker · 13/09/2005 14:20

I like Primark for basics for the kids like socks and knickers, but for most other thing i never seem to find anything i like.

oliveoil · 13/09/2005 14:20

Oi. I have just bought a velvet jacket (see my Asda thread), what is the matter with them???? .

Primark sends me back to my childhood council estate, full of shouty sour faced women with bad make up.

Fimbo · 13/09/2005 14:22

If you are on AOL don't bother looking at OO's thread, believe me I should know!! LOL

noddyholder · 13/09/2005 14:25

I fear the adam ant jacket is the poncho for this winter!

Caligula · 13/09/2005 14:25

Oh good. Now the Vaunda thread is dying down, here's another one that's bound to end in a fight.

You have to go at opening time, run as fast you can to the department you want (and don't try and fit in more than one department, don't try and get above yourself and think you can beat the system) and get to the till before the other customers have come in the door.

It's the only way.

(Tell me when it kicks off! )

dropinthe · 13/09/2005 14:26

I just buy vests there by the bucketload.

Lucycat · 13/09/2005 14:26

At least it has pockets to put stuff in and you don't get draughty sides! (says she who has neither poncho nor AA jacket!)

Fimbo · 13/09/2005 14:27

Then there is the returns department or customer services as I think they call it

teeavee · 13/09/2005 14:40

adam ant/hendrix jacket is vastly more flattering than the average poncho, though - ponchos make many people look like haystacks
