Do you remember that skirt-over-trousers look of the late 90s?

What was that all about then?

Remember wearing this avidly as a student. Looking back, it seems so weird - skirt, and trousers.

What? Did anyone else commit this atrocity?

Never. Smile

ShatnersBassoon · 25/08/2010 16:14

I didn't, but I remember you could buy them as one garment, not a seperate skirt and trousers. Insanity.

What were they called? A trirt? Skousers?

CuppaTeaJanice · 25/08/2010 16:15

It was actually one garment, the skirt part was sewn onto the waistband of the trousers.

And no, I never wore one!

ihavenewsockson · 25/08/2010 16:16

I had a black pair as they were all the rage in the sixth form Confused
So trendy!

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:17

I had a pair, withorwithoutyou, you don't have to be alone in your shame! Blush I got mine from a small boutique, I think I begged my mum as they were quite expensive for what they were! Blush Blush

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:20

I'm wondering if it was a teenager/student phenomenon. Can't remember if I ever saw anyone sensible in them/it.

AbsOfCroissant · 25/08/2010 16:20

I remember them. I also remember mocking them outrageously because they looked ridiculous.

I did, however (I was fifteen, and therefore stupid) have a shorts version, where it was basically normal shorts, but with a flap at the front to make them look like a skirt. So, shorts at the back, skirt at the front. It was kind of like the sartorial version of a mullet.

HowsTheSerenity · 25/08/2010 16:21

If we are reminiscing. Anyone have any of this?

Mini-backpacks handbags
backpacks shaped like animals
the Cher Horowitz schoolgirl look
No Fear shirts
body glitter
high-heeled flip flops
Peace sign/ying yang/smiley face accessories*
lip liner without lipstick
Army pants
tucking in your t-shirt in the front, but not the back
choker necklaces
crushed velvet dresses
Tommy Hilfiger everything
dummies/raver jewelry

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:23

Yes to mini backpacks and body glitter. I think they were also late 90s?

No Fear shirts - missed that one
body glitter - erm, still have some
high-heeled flip flops - avoided those
Peace sign/ying yang/smiley face accessories* - yes
lip liner without lipstick - remember it, fortunately never did it
Army pants - hells yeah.
tucking in your t-shirt in the front, but not the back - nope
choker necklaces - yes, went very well with the lipliner sans lipstick look and super hair-sprayed hair
crushed velvet dresses - yes
Tommy Hilfiger everything - no
dummies/raver jewelry - defo the dummies

AbsOfCroissant · 25/08/2010 16:29

I also remember when ck1 came out

flibbertigibbert · 25/08/2010 16:30

I longed for a backpack shaped like a teddy bear or panda.

I also remember pastel coloured dresses made from horrible synthetic material with an asymmetrical hemline.

Lumberjack shirts worn open with a crop top underneath.

Those awful mules with chunky platform heels.

Tying a piece of Chinese printed silk round the waistband of your jeans.

That stupid hairstyle with loads of little spiky ponytails pinned up with tiny clips.

ellaballoo · 25/08/2010 16:30

I still have my skirt/trouser combo in the back of the wardrobe...I think I'll dig them out!

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:32

Oh yes, the ponytails and tiny clips! That was also me in my student days.

Along with those thick soled trainers spawned by the spice girls.

God I was a catch.

I remember all of the above and even wore some of them Blush Was in my late teens though.

I sooooo wanted CK one when I was at school.

Dewberry 'perfume' anyone?

ShatnersBassoon · 25/08/2010 16:32

Handkerchief tops were very popular too, to show off pasty midriffs and spotty backs.

Ahhhhh memories!!! I had a pair of these and wore them everywhere.

What the hell was that all about, they looked pretty ridiculous, although good bum camoflage...

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:34

Really wish it wasn't in the days pre-digital camera. I have some corking holiday photos from when I was 19 with the hairstyle and body glitter, would upload them if I could.

I never understood that whole dress/ trousers thing.

Perfectly nice dress with a pair of jeans on as well - just looked like you changed your mind halfway through getting dressed.

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:41

at dewberry perfume.
