Do you remember that skirt-over-trousers look of the late 90s?

What was that all about then?

Remember wearing this avidly as a student. Looking back, it seems so weird - skirt, and trousers.

What? Did anyone else commit this atrocity?

Thank you Smile

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 18:02

I really don;'t know how to spell that.

Hanky tops yes, possibly early 2000s - along with those milkmaid/wench tops. One shoulder tops too were around then I think.

Fred perry polo shirt dress with high-heeled kickers was a favourite of mine.

Think that was approx 1999?

NeedToSleepZZZ · 25/08/2010 18:20

Oooh, watching Blossom before getting ready to go out. Applying hair mascara (red/ gold) to a spiral perm Hmm, squirting liberal amounts of 'exclamation' perfume (gives me a headache to even remember the smell now) and wearing a paisley shirt over a child's t-shirt and high cut jeans with wallaby shoes (might have been a regional style thing).
Going out with friends to meet boys for a snog (very innocent compared to today) then coming home and collapsing in front of The Word' and wishing I was as cool as that American presenter with the red hair and big mouth.

resistanceisfutile · 25/08/2010 18:50

I had glitter face gel, glitter nail polish and glitter hair spray Blush

Very short shift dresses (like Geri Halliwel's union jack one).

Shiny lycra dresses / skirts / trousers

Tiny star / flower stickers to stick on your cheek / around your eyes

Dyeing just the front bit of your hair (with bleach or red / purple dye)

cyteen · 25/08/2010 19:22

resistanceisfutile I too had glitter hair spray Grin And fluorescent nail varnish - I used to alternate fingers, green and yellow Hmm

IWouldNotCouldNot am delighted to be welcomed into the ranks of the uber-coolies, as a former long skirt/crop top wearer Grin I even had a long skirt from New York, silver mesh. God I loved it. The day I realised I was too fat to wear it anymore was a black day indeed.

TigerseyeMum · 25/08/2010 20:10

I'm too old to reminisce about your clothes, though I do remember other younger women wearing them.

I still wear the dress over trousers combo, i thought we were allowed now Shock I wear silky Monsoon dresses over linen trousers and leggings. Thought they looked nice (and hide my mahoosive chunky legs Hmm

When I were a lass, Bros shoes (chunky black ones with Grolsch caps on them) were all the rage, worn with rolled up jeans and a man's suit jacket. My boyfriend's dad said I looked like that comedian Mick Millar who wore the big jackets and did the funny walks Blush

southeastastra · 25/08/2010 20:11

and people (not me obviously) wore t shirts under strappy dresses. that was an odd look

I wore one, but to be fair i would of still been a kid. Grin

EdgarAllenPop · 25/08/2010 20:26

skirt & trousers - no, butthen main stream fashion nver really got me. i used to wear the wrap-around skirt intended for this with tights instead [slapper emoticon]

worked quite well, as would yield a good fit to the waist regardless of the weeks eating habits.

mini backpack - no, but my Best mate had one
hair glitter - i dyed red, and wore green hair glitter when off out.

hair mascara - my husband used some to make streak of his hair blue.

the t-shirt under strappy dress (often check print of some kind?) thing - yes i remember - never did though.

dip-dye? i had a beautiful lambswool dip-dye jumper in baby blue/royal blue from Miss Selfridge. Wore it with a white shirt though for a schoolgirly look. that was 1998.

'dewberry' i never wore, having worked in a factory packaging it, the smell didn't seem that alluring...

reminisces

Do you know that is what got me thinking about it all?

Was looking for a knitted dress to wear over leggings and suddenly thought, are we all going to be wearing skirts over trousers again?

i wear dresses with skinny jeans alll the time... I missed the memo that I shouldn't!

mippy · 26/08/2010 14:45

I used to have a Gonzo backpack.

Two looks I remember from the mid-90s:

  • flat cap, shirt under jumper, mini-kilt. Kind of like a sexy urchin.
  • Oatmeal-coloured tops with tartan trousers

I remember shopping all day once to get a nice outfit for my first teenage party - I came out with green jeans, forest0green turtleneck and a knitted blue, cream and dark-blue waistcoat. Turned up and everyone was in blue jeans, white shirts and v-neck tops. I was only thirteen and I felt so out of place (it was a disco and I was too scared ot dance) that I cried for about two hours.

A year later, everyone was wearing sportswear and, if you had money, those sweatshirts with GAP on the front.

mippy · 26/08/2010 14:47

Bjork knots, bindi, glitter dots under eyes.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 26/08/2010 14:57

omfg

zig zag parting, I had a spesh comb from I think the body shop

BornToFolk · 26/08/2010 15:07

I once won a bottle of exclamation in a J17 competition. How 90s is that?!

My favourite hairstyle was sections of hair twisted back from my face and held in place with those little bulldog clips. Or pulled down straight (my hair is naturally curly) at the front and held by a clip. Hard to describe.

ValiumSingleton · 26/08/2010 15:17

I had a trinny and susannah book where they recommended whering a dress over jeans to an interview. I just had to raise my eyes to heaven. That might look ok on somebody with Trinny's height and build but on the average UK woman who is about 5'4" and size 14 that would look absolutely shit.

ValiumSingleton · 26/08/2010 15:22

guilty to the leather rucksack handbag and a zigzag parting.

withorwithoutyou · 26/08/2010 15:25

I think Rachel from Friends was responsible for the t-shirt under strappy dress thing.

Over the knee socks and mini skirts too I believe.

animal backpack - tick (in fact DD took it to tescos this afternoon!)
dress over trousers - tick (and still wearing this 'look' now..)
hair mascara - tick
global hypercolour - tick
zig zag parting - tick
glitter everywhere - tick

I was born in 81.....

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 26/08/2010 15:53

I can remember wearing this sort of monstrosity to ice skating disco in the 1990s.

Sadly fashion seems destined to repeat its on mistakes and seen these beauties advertised on the telly at the weekend.

rimmer08 · 26/08/2010 15:54

i was born in 19798 so the 90s were really my thying i remember i had...

mahoosive hoop earings ( still got them )
wrap ;long skirts with crop tops
low cut trousers with crop tops
lumberjack shirts with body underneath and white jeans
kickers
reebok tracksuit
ton sur ton jumper miles too big
sweatershop stuff
tshirt under strappy dress
global hypercolour tshirt
fat willy's surf shack stuff
hot pant over thick black tights

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 26/08/2010 15:56

Oh god yes robynlyn, global hypercolour tshirts were everyone could seee clearly that your armpits wear hot.

Lovely

But I think trousers and skirt or dress is ok if the dress is to short to wear by itself and you think you look like a lollipop in leggings/dress combo
