Do you remember that skirt-over-trousers look of the late 90s?

What was that all about then?

Remember wearing this avidly as a student. Looking back, it seems so weird - skirt, and trousers.

What? Did anyone else commit this atrocity?

Yes this is my era [grin[

Mini-backpacks handbags
backpacks shaped like animals - I had a furry sheep one
the Cher Horowitz schoolgirl look - a style icon for me, her and Rachel and Monica in Friend
No Fear shirts
body glitter
high-heeled flip flops
Peace sign/ying yang/smiley face accessories*
lip liner without lipstick - not without lipstick but with Rimmel's Birthday Suit
Army pants
tucking in your t-shirt in the front, but not the back
choker necklaces
crushed velvet dresses - yep and babydoll dresses, loved them! Also worn with a tshirt underneath
Tommy Hilfiger everything
dummies/raver jewelry

And platforms, didn't we just think we had invented them? Grin

God, I remember all this stuff! Am 82' child, so the 90s I was very influenced!

anyone also remember hair mascara?

HowsTheSerenity · 25/08/2010 16:48

I am having flashbacks!!!

white musk from the body shop
baggy jeans a la hip hop style
plastic jelly sandals
hypercolour t-shirts
hi top trainers

I really really hope that this does not come back into fashion!

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 16:49

The funny thing is that I remember thinking of the 90s (when we were in them) as being incredibly muted and dull, style-wise. But so much of this stuff seems absolutely ludicrous now.

Oh yes. I had electric blue hair mascara.

My HERO was Angela in "my so-called life" and I was devastated that it only ran to one season.

ShatnersBassoon · 25/08/2010 16:52

Zig-zig parting, anyone?

NamedAfterTheBandActually · 25/08/2010 16:54

I wear skirts over trousers all the time.

But I'm an ageing hippy and it's more layers of patchwork, hemp and patchouli than any kind of 90s throwback.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/08/2010 16:55

I am currently wearing a mini skirt with leggings - does that count?

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 25/08/2010 16:56

Choker necklaces.
Mini backpacks.

And yes, I did the dress over trousers. ALL the cool girls did!

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 25/08/2010 16:57

Hair mascara! I remember thinking it was so, so awesome. And GLITTER. On my face. To go clubbing.

cyteen · 25/08/2010 17:01

TeamEdward I once spent so long putting my hair up in 'Bjork knots' that my arms hung limp by my side through the entire night's clubbing Blush

Yes to body (and face) glitter, rave backpacks, backless tops and one that has so far been missed: stick-on bindis from Indian shops.

TrillianAstra · 25/08/2010 17:04

Hair mascara was rubbish. Stiff horrible slightly-blue hair anyone?

And those shaders/toners didn't make your hair a different colour (they did change the colour of the towels though).

Bumperlicious · 25/08/2010 17:05

Ahh, hair mascara
I was also quite partial to waistcoats for a while
A feathered fringe which had to be curled 'just so' and sprayed with copious amounts of hairspray
And sun-in

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 25/08/2010 17:39

Backless tops!

And God yes, those bloody fake plastic bindis. I blame Gwen Stefani.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 25/08/2010 17:41

Slip dresses (long or short) over a t-shirt!

Also long skirts teamed with crop tops. I never did this but the uber-coolies did.

Indaba · 25/08/2010 17:48

Oh, no....aren't I supposed to do that any more.....

sh*t.....I still do it...

especialy dresses over jeans.....

I love that look.....

Indaba hangs her head head in shame and wanders off a little bewildered and a little ashamed.......

LaurenLaverne · 25/08/2010 17:55

AbsOfCroissant - My friend bought the box set of "My So Called Life", it was such a flashback watching it again, Jordan Catalano is still lush!

hmmSleep · 25/08/2010 17:57

I have committed all these crimes, remember buying my trouser skirt combo from greenwich market and feeling very cool indeedy. Also did the slip dress over t-shirt, (although I admit I still layer vest tops over long sleeved t-shirts now, obviously have a weird obsession with wearing clothes in a perculiar fashion Hmm)

sorrento56 · 25/08/2010 17:58

Go, I have done that this year.

Wore trousers under my dress I mean.

sorrento56 · 25/08/2010 17:59
hmmSleep · 25/08/2010 18:00

How do you spell perculiar, that does not look right?

sorrento56 · 25/08/2010 18:00

peculiar

withorwithoutyou · 25/08/2010 18:01

peculier?

Handkerchief tops, or were they early 2000s?

Still, I will forgive the 90's anything for giving us the bootcut trouser, the pair shaped woman's best friend.
