You might get one or two who genuinely love the club and are no longer at the height of their career (someone like Foden maybe) but there's zero chance that the likes of Haaland, Cherki, Semenyo, etc, hang about in the lower leagues.

Yes but that’s nothing to do with football. Giving it all to the struggling lower league clubs and grass roots teams would be better.

On the ‘I simply don’t understand why football is deemed so important’ comments: If you are not part of it then it is difficult to ‘get’. Where I’m from it’s like a religion. In fact it’s more important than that. When I was going to bring a boyfriend home to my parents they couldn’t have cared less about his race/religion/wealth/upbringing but they did ask which team he supported.
Football unites those of the same team. It provides focus, an outlet, an ability to channel pure passion and receive joy or sorrow in return. To watch it live is to feel those raw emotions radiate back at you. In terms of why; it’s undoubtedly primal on some levels. The tribal draw of being packed with your fellow tribespeople, using your voice to participate in quelling the opposition. My team are my family, my extended club-coloured tribe who I relate to because they’ve lived the same highs and lows, shared those same emotions.
Football used to be a working class (male) form of entertainment. For those men and for many, many fans today it is a light in a life of drudgery. A constant when nothing else can be relied upon. When you also factor in the age-old issue of men struggling to connect with and show their emotions; football support permits this, encourages this, depends upon this. There is undoubtedly the need to mention hooliganism in connection with the tribal, unrestrained emotional element - when it gets channelled badly, wrongly, abhorrently.
I actually would like to study this, the ‘why’ of it all. I’d also love to study the connection/parallels between the folk music tradition of passing history by word of mouth and the tradition of football songs doing the same. It’s on my ‘list of things to do once I retire’.

Oh, and in terms of what to say to your husband OP: as a Liverpool fan I’d say ‘suck it up’. As a football fan I’d say ‘we’ve all been let down and your loyalty is to the team and not its owners’.

I don’t hold football obsessives in particularly high regard so equally find anyone having a huge emotional response to this to be equally strange.

They will definitely struggle to sign top players with this hanging over them.

Why do people parrot this 'it's just kicking a ball around a field' line?

I think they need to be punished severely. Including making any trophies won during this time as null and void. Not sure they should be given to the clubs who came second/runners up. It would feel a bit tainted to me.

Do you have any proof of Arsenal bribing other clubs? It may or may not be true but it’s all allegations. Could be made up by the clubs who lost out. Or Arsenal could have persuaded the voting members that they were the best option. Which, considering they haven’t been relegated since, has been complete vindication of the decision.

Man City's guilty verdict has been a big topic of conversation here-adult DS home for the weekend and we have been looking at the fallout.
I think the punishment has to be big enough to be a deterrent-I don't think a fine alone will have any impact as they have endless money.

Having said that a big scary fine will put others off
I think the owners should be forced to sell as they are def not "fit and proper"

Huge points dock. I heard one journalist saying 100 points a season for 2 seasons so they can't pop right back up.
And on reflection I don't think they can/will strip the titles and give them to second place (even though that would mean we would get 2 more) because the knock on effect of their impact is huge-teams have been relegated/not had european football etc etc because of the points City have taken from them so we can't go back and fix all of that -what we can do is put a giant asterisk beside every single one of their trophies to indicate that they were won by cheating.

Money and greed is destroying everything, i.e. the NHS, economy, housing market, etc. Football is only one of the many things being destroyed.

I think this poster is so superior in their lack of knowledge about football that they don't realise that someone whose username is DialSquare isn't exactly going to be a Man City fan! (Fellow Arsenal fan here).

I'm hoping for a serious points penalty at the very least. The punishment has to be football related. Anything financial will be nothing to them.

I'm Liverpool born and bred.
Whilst Im glad that this has been exposed, I don't see how we can possibly say that we would have won in those years. A city team under Pep could have been successful, but performance across all teams can't be 'predicted ' in hindsight. Too many variables

I agree, taking my boys to the champions league and premier league parades - 2 of the best days of my life. The surge of excitement when we go to a match, seeing their idols in the flesh. The grief and emotion of going to the Jota memorial with them. My grandad and dad standing in the Kop together in the 70s

I don't think there can be any doubt that Klopp's team have been cheated out of titles, especially the 18/19 season where we finished on 97 points. But it would open a massive can of worms all the way down the league, with legal actions being taken all over the place.

Of course you could argue that City being embroiled in a heap of lawsuits from those they've wronged is just punishment, but it would be chaos.

Stripping the titles and leaving them unawarded is probably as far as they can go.

There is so much snobbery about football.

My son and I also big athletics fans - we have had some amazing times, occasions that will stay with us forever - seeing Mo Farah and Usain Bolt at their peak, Josh Kerr's world record this year, Jess Ennis, KJT, Dina, Mondo duPlantis, the glory days of Cram, Ovett and Coe.

But football is seen as something different, as less than. Probably because in spite of the money sloshing around, many many players are from very humble, if not poverty stricken background. Its seen as working class.
I grew up on Goodison Road, and very close to Anfield. I havent always followed football closely but I am a red through and through.
I won't forget Istanbul, I was in Kampala and was treated like a celebrity when people found out I was a Scouser, the win against Barcelona, what a night of drama and passion. The dreadful manner of Diogo Jota's death so soon after his wedding.
And of course Hillsborough.

On a very personal note, I was diagnosed with cancer this year. A few weeks ago I was walking home feeling very pessimistic. And then there it was, sunset, the Golden Sky.

If anything sums it up for me its You'll never walk alone.
