As I said. It’s appalling

Like I said…big six fans…blue in the face.

The rules may have had good intent but they conveniently suit the 6 clubs with historically generated revenue and they absolutely do not want to explore alternatives that would allow the league to become more competitive (and I mean an actual run at the Premier League not just 4th/5th place every so often).

Financial regulation is needed but the same few clubs being ring fenced is not sporting.

These clubs aren’t going out of business or even close to it. They are hamstrung though and it’s not for our own good or whatever patronising slant gets put on it.

Man City cheated but it’s the only way a club has broken the glass ceiling. Thats why Liverpool/United/Arsenal are fuming. Part of me hopes they get away with it.

So we'll forget the fact that Leicester City managed it, shall we? And ignore the fact that it wasn't just the big clubs that voted for this.

What alternative do you have in mind that would make the PL more competitive?

No, these clubs are not close to going out of business now. That happens when a rich owner pumps in lots of money then loses interest, leaving them with players on contracts with wages the club can no longer afford and other similar commitments. Look at what has happened to Sheffield Wednesday. Look at what happened to Leeds United some years back.

Yes but no one will touch them

Leicester City managed 11 years ago. An odds defying anomaly that does not look remotely close to happening again. The financial chasm has widened so significantly. Are ‘we’ really going to pretend that one non big 6 club winning the league in over 30 years demonstrates anything but a closed shop?

There are alternatives that could be explored such as salary caps or escrow accounts. 14 clubs need to vote for change. There are a fair few that are accepting of their place in the food chain that will vote alongside the big 6 to prevent more clubs becoming bigger/more successful and increasing their chances of relegation.

The idea that the likes of Man Utd are concerned about Sheffield Wednesday is a joke. Their priority is self interest. They are not unusual in that, all clubs are the same - see voting patterns mentioned above but any one thinking that the current financial regulations don’t very deliberately advantage the established few are deluded.

The fact that some of the big 6 (I hate that term but it is the easiest recognisable grouping) balls it up when they have such a massive advantage being able to build big squads of high value players is testament to how well some of the other 14 have done recently to upset the apple cart a bit but we’re further away than ever from a non big 6 champion.

Theres a number of high profile people who speak very well on this issue, Simon Jordan being one. If you are interested I recommend listening to what he has to say.

What is rude and ignorant about that? Someone kindly filled me in upthread without the insults.

The independent commission's verdict against Manchester City has "significant implications for the integrity of the game", according to the Football Association.
In a statement, English football's governing body added: "We are carefully considering the decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate."

I think Andy Burnham has been very ill advised to make the comments he made. Now he’s having to row back. It gives ammunition to think 🤔 does it not?

It’s an own goal for sure.

The Lib Dems now picking him up on it, hopefully they’ll ask directly in the HoC if he will do this.

Comparing football to the arts and literature is quite the stretch.

lol

I like arts and literature but I don’t agree with your lol.

Why do people parrot this 'it's just kicking a ball around a field' line?

Authors - 'they're just scribbling words on some paper'

Actors - 'they're just walking on a stage pretending to be somebody else'

Painters - 'they're just splashing some paint on a canvas'

Musicians - 'they're just making something vibrate'

Do you see how asinine it sounds?
It's tiresome.

This is an excellent point.

The reason people do this on Mumsnet is class snobbery plain and simple.

People look down their noses at football and fans because it is predominantly associated with working class culture and the naice mc snobs of mn sneer at it, even more so when discussing clubs in the (whisper it) north of England. They are also apparently proudly ignorant of one of the most seismic breaking news stories of the year which has huge political, cultural, social and economic ramifications.

I am a season ticket holder for my team in the city where i grew up. On my way to the match I walk past the theatre and there are people going in. I also love the theatre but I often wonder whose night is going to be full of the most drama, tension and skill, and most of the time, I think it’s in the stadium not the theatre.
