I am not sure which will happen first, Manchester City being punished for the 115 charges, or HS2 opening.

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2025 09:02

😃I am not placing a bet on that

But why aren't the fan groups protesting about it like they did about the SL when the CWC also threatens the PL?

It is dangerous to just to put up with it and to think it will just take place every 4 years.

FIFA want to make it the the most important competition in football and to expand it.

If they expand it further then they probably will do, but FIFA doesn't have any jurisdiction to interfere with the European game. The Super League idea threatened both the domestic leagues and the European competitions.

The Club World Cup is mainly a problem if burn out because it's played in the off season. An issue will be if in 4 years it's played in Saudi Arabia and they have to move it to the winter.

Brefugee · 16/07/2025 10:59

if the German fan groups suspect that it may have an effect on the Bundesliga they will protest, as they did with the super league. The fan/ultra networks are very good at communication and coordinating this kind of protest.

(you remember the tennis balls, then the beach balls, then the chocolate coins?)

Tiswa · 16/07/2025 11:09

@Brefugee given Musiala’s injury hasn’t it already

it is an odd one because even though the Brazilian teams did very well as did Al Hilal 3 of the 4 semi finalists and the final were very much something you could see in Europe. I mean the semi finalists were 3 of the last 4 champions league winners and very much could have been the last 4 of Man City hadn’t lost to al Hilal

Brefugee · 16/07/2025 11:30

he plays for Bayern, right? most other fans don't give a shiny shit about them as they don't suffer financial repercussions (being so rich). But if it starts to affect, say, the timetabling of matches (we have already seen off Monday matches, and it is comparatively rare that we have an "english-week" with midweek matches, except for the cup) the fans will protest. Again.

And given the ownership model of 50+1 - the fans will win. (although incrementally that is being hollowed out, so we will see)

Fifa might not be able to interfere legally with the European game, but there will be pressure on the FA to reduce the number of fixtures on the top teams, perhaps by reducing the number clubs in the PL or by scrapping the league cup.

The FA is in a difficult position bc it can't fall out with Fifa as they need to bid for world cups.

Was there much interest in the CWC in Germany?

Brefugee · 16/07/2025 12:32

gosh no idea - i was ignoring it, and moving in Gladbach circles as i do with no involvement, i didn't see anyone else speak about it much. I tend to avoid Bayern / Dortmund twitter.

i know from experience that DAZN isn't generally loved because of delivery problems.

Hellohah · 17/07/2025 12:57

We have our first pre-season friendly in 2 days, and my gloating about Cuhna and Mbeumo has come back to bite me on the arse 😂

We haven't got Big Bry, and to add the shit pot, we've still not shifted any of the 5 players we don't want.

I don't think 2025/26 is going to be the season I hoped for, and all I wanted was a positive goal difference 🤷🏻‍♀️ if I was of a softer disposition, this would be very depressing.

Still hope you lot are looking forward to the new campaign though!

Brefugee · 17/07/2025 19:41

oh god the more news that comes out about Sheffield Wednesday, the worse it is.

Tiswa · 17/07/2025 19:43

I can’t see them surviving sadly

Brefugee · 17/07/2025 19:45

same, utterly devastated (well, in fandom terms, obviously there are worse things that happen at sea)

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2025 19:54

I just read that the take over has fallen through, sorry to hear that.

Oh no sorry to hear that. I hope someone else is interested

Brefugee · 17/07/2025 22:02

sold some players to pay wages
and 2 players have made use of the "no pay, free transfer" rule :(

I don't see how we can come back from this. Meantime, they released next season's shirt! 72 quid!

burblish · 17/07/2025 23:05

@Brefugee It's heartbreaking when clubs are mismanaged into the ground like this 😥

MaybeNotBob · 17/07/2025 23:11

I think that must be the worst penalty shoot out I've ever seen!

Tiswa · 17/07/2025 23:21

It certainly wasn’t like the carabao cup final 2022 was it!
and why did the goalkeeper take number 5 only to Harry Kane it!

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2025 23:25

The only goalie I would trust to take a penalty is Pickford.

England will have to do better next game but semi finals here we come!

Haha ‘Harry Kaning’ a penalty 😂😂

Tiswa · 17/07/2025 23:45

Kelleher (who did score) was an ex striker before becoming a goal keeper which is probably why he scored

they were awful awful penalties no power in some at all

TizerorFizz · 18/07/2025 00:08

@DuncinToffee Everyone on Radio 5 must have been watching a different game! People saying England were brilliant. They were not. Mistakes everywhere. Poor passes. Couldn’t get behind the Swedish defence. The Swedes effectively lost it. Both teams penalties had DH and me in hysterics. Just awful. Rivetting buf awful. These are professional footballers for Gods sake! Lauren James rolling it along the ground! Only Lucy Bronze knew how to fire one like Harry Kane. They need a new penalty coach for certain. Plus some of our players are too slow and won’t be fit enough for the next match. The defence shirked tackles and Jess Carter could not keep up with anyone and the Swedes knew it. A big problem!

murasaki · 18/07/2025 00:10

I was shouting at the telly to replace Carter with Le Tissier, Wubben Moy or Morgan after 20 minutes. Sarina left it a bit too long. She just had a bad day at the office.
