The footage of Neves and Cancelo trying to hold it together during the minutes silence before their game is really tough to watch. They should not be playing. Where is the compassion?

Tiswa · 04/07/2025 22:44

I suspect @JasonTindallsTan that with Jota being the consummate professional both felt playing honoured him rather than not. It must be difficult in this situation (and I feel for Pedro Neto) to decide between working and going to the funeral and how best to honour and say goodbye.

great advert for Brazilian football though

It's a difficult one, as up until now it's only been rumours. Even now it's charges, and he hasn't been convicted (innocent until proven guilty and all that). If Arsenal had suspended him it would have opened them up to legal problems.

It's wouldn't be the first time that malicious rumours have been aimed at someone connected with Arsenal.

If he's guilty, I hope the book is thrown at him.

Rape is a non-issue to so many people (including some women, unfortunately) and it is NEVER handled efficiently or properly by the criminal justice system.

Suspension while inquiries went on is the least i expect. Football teams need to get on board with this.

Tiswa · 05/07/2025 10:53

i guess an agreed approach that all clubs follow but I agree it is a non issue to some fans

the justice system is broken with it as well 3 years is far far too long and accounts etc are no longer going to be as clear which is evidentially problematic. For it to get to this stage for me does show a certain level of guilt though given the huge number that dont

Ruben Neves made it to the funeral and is a pallbearer - I assume took a private jet once the game ended

MaybeNotBob · 06/07/2025 21:20

OK, so it looks like it's going to be Gyökeres. To be fair, he was obviously desperate to come to us, so that's got to be worth something. He has even taken a pay cut! Obviously Leipzig and Šeško were trying to play us, so I hope it works out for the best.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2025 21:27

Goodness I’ve shed some tears about Diogo Jota these last few days. Neves’s tribute was just about the last straw. I think a lot of Wolves players and ex players are in bits about this. As is the club. There is a massive floral tribute at the Molineux where he was adored and I know I, and many Wolves fans were sad to see him leave but so pleased he was doing so well because, you know, once a wolf. What an absolute tragedy for his family.

Read a lovely interview the other day from a while back with Neves and Jota ❤️ www.theguardian.com/football/2018/sep/21/ruben-neves-diogo-jota-wolves-porto-cricket-interview

❤️❤️❤️ it really is shit, isn’t it. I can’t stop thinking about his wife and their three kids. I also saw today that apparently his brother Andre was also married, which makes it even sadder.

I don’t think I’ve thought this much about someone who’s passed away since when Alexei Navalny (the Russian political prisoner) died last year. I found it really sad, but it was sort of expected, as terrible as that sounds - but this is obviously completely unexpected.

burblish · 06/07/2025 22:45

I can't stop thinking about Jota and Andre and their family either.

The Liverpool players' return for pre-season training has been postponed till Tuesday, but I imagine they will be completely dreading it (as Salah alluded to). They will feel Diogo's loss so keenly. I feel sorry for the new players, too, for whom the atmosphere is going to be so strange. Same at Penafiel. Life has to go on...but it's never going to be the same for the ones left behind, is it.

I think the other thing that gets me about Jota and his brother’s deaths is just how preventable they were, in a ‘sliding doors’ way.

Everything suggests that he would have flown back from Portugal to the U.K., but he decided to drive back because of his recent lung surgery. There are so many ‘what ifs’ in this that just make it a really upsetting situation. It’s unimaginable to think what his family must have been going through when they woke up to find out what had happened to him and his brother.

Also, whilst it is lovely that there is so much footage available of what he was like - both as a player and also as a regular guy off the pitch - that also makes it sadder, as it feels like he is still around even though we know he’s not.

Tiswa · 06/07/2025 23:48

I guess yes Fandano stretching back to the 2022 Champions League Final to the Tosi Adarabioyo challenge that caused the lung issues and I think the decision to play with it until the close season.
Life is just a series of what ifs that for most of us take is off that path but for some put is fairly on it.

and everyone says how just how nice he is - and I haven’t seen this level of gestures for death either from concerts (Oasis/Ozzy Osbourne/Robbie Williams) to MLS to Aussie rules

What happened in Adarabioyo’s challenge on him? Was it on his chest or somewhere? I knew nothing about the lung issues till the articles mentioned that he’d had lung surgery. Also, if his lung issues date back to 2022 (if I’ve understood your post correctly), why would the club/medical staff wait till summer 2025 to operate?

EDIT: Ah just seen the Adarabioyo challenge happened in Oct 2024.

Tiswa · 07/07/2025 00:06

The 2022 is because if Liverpool had one they would be in the club World Cup!

yes there were lots of rumours about lung issues after that challenge (NOT the fault of the player at all just one of those things - like by the way the awful Musiala injury) and his minutes were definitely managed

i assume he was ok though the surgery recently had been kept pretty quiet

I don’t fully understand this post and your previous post - sorry. The main thing I don’t understand is why it took 3 years for his lungs to be operated on, if the lung issues started in 2022. I’m not a Liverpool supporter, so didn’t follow the matches that caused the issues.

I think what Tiswa means is that if Liverpool had won the 2022 Champions League Final, they'd have been playing in the Club World Cup (i.e. Jota might have been safe in the US on the night he died, rather than on that road).

The rib injury which led to the lung issues was from the Adarabioyo challenge on Jota when Liverpool played Chelsea in Oct 24.

Ahh I see - thanks for clarifying, burblish! Gosh, that’s a heartbreaking thought.

Tiswa · 07/07/2025 08:57

Not saying by the way they should have won it it is just an interesting look at how different life would have been for many with that one change!

Yes, that’s very true that it would have been very different. It’s a really sad thought.

Not just saying how nice, saying it with examples such as the interest he took in women's football.

Fandango52 · 07/07/2025 10:50

Is that a reply to something I’ve posted? I actually do support Spurs partly because of my Dad, so just wondered if that post was aimed at me 😂

Tarkan · 08/07/2025 20:17

Bought my ticket today for Arbroath v St Mirren in the League Cup on Saturday. Because I got it as soon as they opened sales I managed to bag the same seat I have with my season ticket for league matches. 😁

Also looking forward to seeing how this goes (hopefully pic works). When DH first took me to matches we used to enjoy a pint in the club bar before the match but they changed it to hospitality only. We’ve been saying for a while we would like something like this. Other teams are getting it during the cup too but it seems to be different rules in different places so I guess they’re testing a few ideas.

Oh and I may be sharing new pie pics. You can now get an Arbroath Smokie pie at the match. So I definitely have to try one this week.

Apparently it’s a “selection of drinks” they’ll be offering so fingers crossed we have some decent choice and it’s not just “water or a pint of Madri” LOL. One of the other teams I think is getting nothing but Moretti at theirs so sounds like we have the better option anyway. I’ll update after checking it out on Saturday LOL.

Oooh what’s an Arbroath smokie pie? Goes off to Google Hope you enjoy!

Tarkan · 08/07/2025 23:53

Smokies are a local delicacy of smoked haddock. If you like fish and are ever up this way you definitely have to try them either straight from the barrel in one of the fish houses or from one of the lovely local restaurants or chip shops. Depending on where you go you can find them in pancakes or pâté form amongst a variety of other ways depending on the place and menu.

Apparently the pie at the footy is full of the fish and has a cheesy topping. And if you don’t like fish then my usual the last few seasons has been a delicious steak and black pudding pie. Both are only £3.50 so decent prices for them too. 😁
