It seems far too early to be starting the football season. Were it me in control of football, the earliest would be the end of August, even if it meant smaller divisions or the reduction in competitions.

Brefugee · 09/07/2025 09:55

those pies sound great, @Tarkan - but i am always a bit "meh" about fish and cheese together. Won't that be a bit salty?

You could suggest to your club the thing Gladbach do? there are 2 types of season ticket, the regular one and the "plus" one. For the plus, you get a ticket for any matches not related to the Bundesliga, and the money is deducted by direct debit automatically. I keep meaning to upgrade to that. Of the 30k season tickets about 10k have this function.

There's a small Fan Zone outside Hillsbrough with beer -but no bitter, just lager or IPA. It's Yorkshire, fgs, and no bitter. I complain every time.

ETA, regarding start time - the 2nd Bundesliga starts on 1st August and it's way smaller than any of the English leagues. Bonkers (although to be fair, we do have the winter break)

JasonTindallsTan · 09/07/2025 10:31

It’s crazy that Chelsea’s season hasn’t even finished yet others are gearing back up to start again. The club World Cup has been a colossal disaster from start to finish. I love football, will watch any game just to watch a game - and I’ve watched virtually none of it and I’m sure I’m not alone.

I think it will have a real impact on Chelsea’s upcoming season. And not in a good way. Their players will be knackered. Although they have plenty of them…

Tarkan · 09/07/2025 11:24

Our league starts on 1st August too but we have the 5 league cup group stage matches this month. It means we have fewer games to mess up the league games I guess. Plus at Gayfield it’s good that we take advantage of the better months for weather as it’s often miserable over winter LOL. Saturday is meant to be a scorcher here so I’ll have to remember my sunscreen. Something we rarely get to say at Gayfield. 🤣

As for the pie, smokies aren’t too salty compared to some other smoked fish, usually nice and juicy (I make a lovely Smokie pâté every Christmas and about a quarter of the fish just vanishes into my mouth instead of the bowl 🤣). I’ll update on how the pie is though. A friend has had one and says it’s amazing so I’m very hopeful.

The plus ticket sounds like a great idea. I think it’s the SFA they’d have to discuss it with as the ticket costs for cup matches are decided by them I think. Not totally sure, I just pay attention to the FB posts that say “season tickets are/aren’t valid for this game” for anything that isn’t a league game. 🤣

Just seen some articles that came out yesterday about Diogo Jota’s car accident. They say it’s likely he was driving the car he was in with his brother and also say he was speeding.

A particularly sad point is when someone they interviewed in one of the articles - can’t remember who it was or which article - says they may have survived the crash if they’d been driving slower. I know that’s a very obvious point to make, but it’s so sad. Of course, the road they were driving on was also badly maintained, which would have made it all the more dangerous.

I just don’t understand why they were speeding though. I suppose we’ll never know, but I don’t understand it. From what the newspapers have been saying about their plans to catch the ferry from Spain to England, it seemed like they were on track to have a rest and then catch the ferry they’d planned to. I just feel so sad for them both and their families, as it seemed so preventable ❤️❤️

EDIT: I was actually in two minds about posting this, as my intention is just to discuss the circumstances and situation of the accident and just to air how I feel about it. I really hope my post doesn’t come across as victim-blaming, as that’s not at all my intention. I just wanted to ask your thoughts on it, as I just cannot understand why they would have been speeding (even if it would have been quite an exhilarating, exciting thing to do, along empty roads at night, in a Lamborghini).

Tiswa · 09/07/2025 12:56

they were overtaking weren’t they? So speeding up for overtaking is fairly normal - speed limit is 75mph say that time of night 80/85 is probably fairly normal then increasing speed for overtaking could easily reach 85/90 without giving it much thought

we did the German autobahn with no speed limit on - we were coming back from the match and the pizzeria shut at 10! And we went at 90 and it is fast! The autobahns are very well maintained though lack of maintenance at that speed

Hellohah · 09/07/2025 13:11

The roads are excellent in Spain. When we drove, I was so surprised how pleasurable it was compared to over here.
Mostly the lorries do 100 over there and it's very easy to go over the 120 limit when overtaking. I was conscious of my speed being abroad and I was in a little car. Would be very easy in a fast car to speed unintentionally.

Ever more of the Autobahn is having speed limits imposed though, and the limit is often 120mph. The recommended speed limit here is 130, but it is not mandatory. I absolutely love bombing around in my Golf but you have to be careful and alert, and tbh it does get a bit scary at night. But i do go over 100mph. Until DH nags me to slow down...

Ah yes, that’s a good point that they probably sped up because they were overtaking. Sorry - I forgot to include that.

I think I’m just trying to work out why they were going so fast - even though they were overtaking - when the road was so poor. Maybe they just thought it would be okay.

Of course, I realise I’m saying all of this with hindsight, and I doubt they’d be aware of how poor that road was, as there’s no reason why they’d be familiar with that road or area.

The whole thing is just so fucking sad. It’s heartbreaking.

It was the autobahn 42 between Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund and was fairly empty 9:30 on a Sunday night it is an odd experience going that fast! He may have reached 100 not sure was sat in the back!

the fast cars as well are built for speed and looks rather than safety it looked like a car that would buckle

Brefugee · 09/07/2025 15:55

you were lucky - it is wall to wall roadworks at the moment

Most of the 42 has a 120 limit anyway, though, because of the noise.

Our newest signing will fit right in

I think people are over thinking this. Two young lads in a Lamborghini - of course you're going to be speeding.

I did think that, but then I also think about the fact that DJ seemed really sensible and mature, and by all accounts his brother was too. And I just keep thinking that they were both married, and DJ had three very young children, he was recently married and he’d just had a fabulous end to his year as a footballer. They had everything going for them.

That just makes me think - why the bloody hell would you speed on an unfamiliar crappy road in the middle of the night? Yes, okay, they were young and they had a top of the range car, but still.

I want to make it really clear that I am not placing any sort of blame on anyone here at all. I apologise if it seems I am - I promise I’m not. It just makes no sense to me. I just don’t understand why they’d take the risk of speeding.

Tiswa · 09/07/2025 17:48

Most drivers speed though - I guess until they say how fast it is hard to say but I wouldn’t see 90 overtaking as being that out of the realm of fairly normal behaviour on a motorway at that night.

There is a scene in inbetweeners (introducing it to DD before she starts sixth form) where they see if Simon’s Fiat can go 100. Deciding it was a clear Road and if it could go a certain speed again seems like a response within the normal range.

we all have moments in our life’s of what ifs (I have 2 close death moments both involving cross a road and people pulling me back). For most of us these just become fleeting memories and reminders for others they become a concrete moment. Sadly this was one of those times

Very much this. It probably wasn't the first time, and if nothing had happened it probably wouldn't have been the last time.

Tiswa · 10/07/2025 07:17

Ona separate note PSG are quite incredible a side!

They are! I’m super impressed with them right now. Winning the CL and now in the CWC final. And a big well done to the Lionesses for last night’s excellent result too!

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2025 11:47

They have a lot of spending money but Luis Enrique has managed to make a team out of them. Unlike when they had all the 'superstars'.

So true. I remember when Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr all came to Real Madrid, and I really felt like they’d make the team unstoppable. I now realise though that having players who are individually brilliant doesn’t necessarily mean the team will also be brilliant. I am excited for TAA to join Real Madrid though!

I was also thinking- it must have been pretty galling for Mbappe to lose to his old team!

Tiswa · 10/07/2025 12:07

The best players don’t always make the best team or squad, you need them working together - it’s why Liverpool won the league Spurs won the UEL (whilst been awful in the league) and PSG are so good

it’s why Manchester United are so bloody awful at the moment there is no cohesion or bond between the players at all

Tiswa · 11/07/2025 09:57

Spurs have been busy DS told my Dad the rumours about Ginbs White and now he is signing today feels like it used to be quick!
and Henderson to Brentford makes sense replacement for Nordgard and joins ex Liverpool players - should be good for Kelleher as well who must be feeling the loss of Jota to have someone join he knows well

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2025 11:06

It looks like quite a few teams still have to sell for PSR,

Well, Arsenal seem to be doing their best to ensure that Chelsea do not have any issues with PSR.

I like Madueke but he is not worth £50m.
