Man City were very impressive, our result last Sunday doesn't look that bad now.

I think Man City will do the treble now. My daughter was manning the bar at the ethiad tonight.

beenrumbled · 18/05/2023 07:22

Yay City - A part of me still thinks "We're not really here".

I'd be sad to see Xhaka go, he's come back brilliantly and has been a definite presence in the dressing room, and on the pitch (although not always ideally). I presume that Arteta has a plan and that he won't be automatic first choice in the future, so he's giving his the opportunity to leave, and he deserves the choice.

On the Toney issue, it's rather strange that they ban Brentford's best player with two games still to go. And it's even more dubious considering that they have to play Sprs and City. OK, so we aren't going to be neck and neck with City on the last day, but there are teams going for the European spots vying with Sprs, which could give them an advantage. You'd think that at this stage of the season it would make more sense to wait two weeks, and then ban him for 6 months from the beginning of the next season. It can be hard to tell whether it's dodgy or just incompetent...

Yes, that is a good point about Toney but I hope they investigated and did everything regardless of where we were in the season.

I assumed that his ban would start when the new season started but they have started it immediately. So I hope that they just follow their procedures regardless.

Brefugee · 18/05/2023 12:24

his new ban starting now means that 2 months of it is in the off season tho. That's batshit.

Poor Mr Bref is gutted at Boro bottling the play offs. Wednesday up for another pasting this evening, but I'll be at the stadium in Cologne watching the women's DFB Pokal final (FA Cup). It's nearly sold out, which is amazing. So i can ignore Wednesday until tomorrow.

Parky04 · 18/05/2023 17:43

Have been watching football for 40 years and City's performance last night was one of the best I have ever seen!

Brefugee · 18/05/2023 19:38

i know this isn't the women's football thread but this gets more attention. 44,808 people in the stadium today (sold out) at Cologne for the cup final. Wolfsburg won (for the 10th time) against Freiburg (who put up a great fight)

Wolfsburg fans, typically, were quiet. Freiburg appeard to have brought all their ultras, drums and banners and all - it was so noisy, brilliant fun. I was in the first row and was hit by the ball.

I seem to be a magnet for the ball too! Sounds like an amazing atmosphere.

I'm currently sitting here biting my nails (well not literally, I don't like doing that) at the West Ham match. They haven't won a trophy in my whole lifetime (and I've only been a fan for the last few years) so even getting to the final would be an amazing thing for me. 🤞⚒️

Brefugee · 18/05/2023 20:52

I hope West Ham do it - i love to see other teams get a bite at a cherry

Wednesday are currently 2-0 up against Peterborough. Only 3 more (and not letting any in) we'll make the play-off final

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 21:12

I think if we made the final it would actually be the first one in my lifetime too actually (I was born in 1981 and I know the last win was 1980 but not sure if that was the last final too).

Of course I got to see the U18s lift the youth FA cup this year so I don't want to downplay that amazing win either. 🥰

Good luck to Wednesday. I've seen crazier things happen so you never know!

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 21:55

I'm actually crying because we scored. Going to the final!!! 🥰⚒️

Don't know who we're playing yet though. Basel v Fiorentina has gone to extra time.

AndNobbyDancing · 18/05/2023 22:03

I've been proper sad with Saints going down, have lost a bit of the football spark.

But this SW game, so much passion, such a fight from Wednesday. Extra time!

(The only thing that makes me a little... is related to the Toney thing, 4-0 to the underdogs then 4-0 in the last minute of injury time...)

DuncinToffee · 18/05/2023 22:04

Comgrats Tarkan enjoy it!

Wednesday is going to extra time. Mick Lyons is there

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 22:08

Just put the Wednesday match on. It had been 3-0 when I last saw and never thought to check full time. Fingers crossed for them!

AndNobbyDancing · 18/05/2023 22:22

Bloody glad I'm a neutral

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 22:32

Same here Nobby!

burblish · 18/05/2023 22:40

I’m also watching Wednesday in disbelief - extraordinary stuff! And well done to the Hammers tonight, too.

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 22:42

We're playing Fiorentina in the final after a 129th minute goal for them. Thought they were going to go to penalties.

Which is obviously the word of the day. I don't know if I can watch these and that's me as a neutral.

burblish · 18/05/2023 22:47

@Tarkan I was just saying exactly that to DH - even when you are completely neutral, a penalty shoot out is such a nerve-wracking thing to watch!

Tarkan · 18/05/2023 22:56

That's probably the craziest second leg comeback I've ever seen. Well done Wednesday!

DuncinToffee · 18/05/2023 22:58

Well done Sheffield Wednesday!

I used to love penalties as a kid, now I find them such a hard thing. So much pressure on all the players but I also know they can't just play on forever too. I definitely prefer watching them as a neutral but I do always feel for anyone who misses no matter what team it is.

AndNobbyDancing · 18/05/2023 23:03

Agree about the penalties, got me tonight, choked for Wednesday and Peterborough fans.

AndNobbyDancing · 18/05/2023 23:06

Loved not having Var, loved the passion, broken for some, Delighted for others.

EddieHoweisMYmanager · 18/05/2023 23:55

Fantastic result for Newcastle tonight. I can almost taste Champions League. A win on Monday will seal the deal. If we can put out a team, there was a lot of limping by the end of the game tonight!

Got home just in time to see Sheffield Wednesday go through. What a comeback!
