Have just finished watching the very last drop of the Olympics, have absolutely loved it! The number of unexpected wins has made it so exciting and some of the stories of the athletes are so inspiring! And I've learned a lot about sports I never knew even existed. I can't wait for the Paralympics and would love to see something live in Paris.

JacquelineCarlyle · 08/08/2021 16:49

Me too @whysotriggered

Loved the BBC's montage at the end and the song that went along with it! Brought a tear to my eye! Such a fantastic Olympics! Well done Team GB and all the Olympic athletes! Arigato Tokyo!

Oblomov21 · 08/08/2021 16:57

Saw a few clips of closing ceremony. Fabulous.

The whole games has been fab.
Without controversy? Isn't there normal a huge scandal at every games?

Oblomov21 · 08/08/2021 16:59

I saw a clip of a commentator saying that this had been a poor games for GB compared to previous, certain sports had underperformed, and that underfunding and overfunding would need to be reviewed.
Presumably this will start straight away?

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/08/2021 17:02

weight lifting and bmx should get more funding now
tough job

whysotriggered · 08/08/2021 17:09

Team GB came fourth in the medals table, not sure how that can be a poor showing, maybe commentator knows something I don't! Will watch the Gold Rush documentary film to prolong the Olympic mood 😂

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/08/2021 17:15

It's a bit of a drop in gold medals. Having said that, we had quite a few silvers in martial arts and boxing didn't we? So those could have quite easily gone the other way.

2012: 65 (29/17/19) = 3rd
2016: 67 (27/23/19) = 2nd
2020: 65 (22/21/22) = 4th

I think there’s been at least a couple of controversial athletes Wink

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/08/2021 18:24

i really enjoyed the Gold Rush, quite emotional

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/08/2021 18:32

Helen Glover's road to the olympics was amazing.
how was Jessica Ennis chosen as the 2012 poster girl and what a shame for Christine Ohuruogu

Meltinthemiddle · 08/08/2021 18:48

Aww just watched the crash with Laura Kenny how unlucky. You must feel absolutely gutted to lose in such a way she had no chance saving her self 😢

Ekofisk · 08/08/2021 18:56

Laura K was very pragmatic in her post race interview. I guess the upside was that she wasn’t injured.

There was a good short programme on iPlayer about Adam Peaty’s road to Tokyo (Beneath the Surface). As the parent of a similarly sized ex-swimmer I really sympathised with him on the size of his hotel dinner.

Apparently we have more fourth places than any other country.

Let’s hope they review the disparity in funding between rowing and athletics.

@JacquelineCarlyle the BBC contract for Paris is the same as Tokyo so yes I imagine we will all be getting a Discovery pass given the very pleasing lack of time difference!

JacquelineCarlyle · 08/08/2021 19:18

Thanks @TheWindRises, although annoying that that is the case!

MarshaBradyo · 08/08/2021 19:21

Really fantastic place on medal table

What an achievement

Buggerthebotox · 08/08/2021 21:07

@AbsolutelyPatsy: I always got the feeling that Christine Ohurougu wasn't terribly popular with the powers that be. Maybe it's because of those missed drugs tests. Hmm.

2012 would have been on her doorstep. She's never a pundit either, despite her success.

Christine was set to be the face of the games until her missed drugs tests ban.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/08/2021 23:21

AbsolutelyPatsy · 09/08/2021 06:23
