I now love football: who should I support?

Following England this year has really given me a love for the game and I want to see more! I'm thinking I should start supporting a team. Wondering who you support and why, is it a team that's been in your family, or your local team?

As you can see from my name I love Kalvin Philips but am guessing he will be snapped up and taken away from Leeds now? Unless he stays true to his roots 🤔

OP posts:

Kalvin is going nowhere. I've followed Leeds since 2011 when my husband dragged me to Elland Road and have loved every minute. It has been a real rollercoaster but the current squad, owners and coaching staff are absolutely amazing. The community around Leeds is absolutely inimitable. They play exciting, fast paced attacking football and I adore them. Kalvin is going nowhere

@PiggyPlumPie

My home town all the way! Derby County for my sins.

Now live in Aberdeenshire but will always be a Ram!

Forest fan here Smile

It should be a team you have a connection to. Either local, or home town, or family link, or even something random like you once visited.

Be careful though. It’s a one time choice, you can never ever change no matter how bad it gets!

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 13:06

@PiggyPlumPie

I've had a crush on Gary Neville for 25 years.

I still get that warm teenage warmth when I see him.

SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder · 12/07/2021 13:06

Local team.

Unless there is a 'family' team. For example, I'm not from Liverpool. But Liverpool is my team because it's the team my family supports. (Brothers dad supported them)

boomchikawowwow · 12/07/2021 13:09

Man Utd. There's no other option 🤷‍♀️

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2021 13:10

Also, check out the women's teams as well Their matches are much more accessible and the competition is improving all the time.

Stef92 · 12/07/2021 13:10

Local and family team of Newcastle United. Very similar to England in that we are on a long trophy drought (last one in 1969) and hardly make finals.

Yes! I’m happier to take my nursery age kids to the women’s games.

Are you me? I could have written this post (and also have an eye on Grealish too).

Gary Neville is pretty much the single reason I support Man Utd 😂

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 13:19

Oh @PiggyPlumPie

Are you my missing half?

Gary was reason for supporting Utd.

And hands of Grealish!

I stopped watching Football after my footie mad ex left. He killed football for me but think England have reignited it again.

Riapia · 12/07/2021 13:20

If you need to ask then you’ll never be a true fan.

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 13:20

Sorry that was to @PollyDarton1

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 13:22

@Carrott21

You don't get to choose! Grin. It's where you live.
of course you get to choose!

DH supports Liverpool.
DS2 is a MUTD fan.
some nephews are Arsenal fans, some support Chelsea.

none of us live locally to those clubs (and only DH's fam has Liverpool ties)

penni00 · 12/07/2021 13:22

OP, let us know what you decide! You could go for a male tram and a female team perhaps plus a local team. Then give up you current employment for your new full-time jiobSmile

penni00 · 12/07/2021 13:23

Male team!

bwfcchick88 · 12/07/2021 13:26

I've been a Bolton Wanderers fan my whole life as it's where I'm from. I think you should support your local side.

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 13:28

Colchester United is my local side or maybe Braintree town.

I'm close to close to both

BasiliskStare · 12/07/2021 13:28

Local team - DH is nearly 60 and has supported his local team through thick and thin .

Passthesauce · 12/07/2021 13:40

Newcastle (I grew up in NE). As @Stef92 says, it's a bit like being an England fan - constant dashed hopes and it's been grim for the past few years.

Awesome fans, though, and fantastic on match day. One of the few one-team cities, with a city-centre ground, and when the team are doing well, it lifts the whole area.

BatsInTheCellar · 12/07/2021 13:42

Always go for your local team, or one that you can at least go and watch a fair amount. I've never understood supporting a team you can't actually watch, or has no emotional or geographic connection to you/your family.

I support the team whose ground is on the road my Dad was born on - he never gave me a choice really. It's been a lifelong source of joy (and pain!) but I wouldn't have it any other way. The camaraderie and friendships from supporting a smaller team is fantastic. Oh and I got to watch Jack Grealish and Kasper Schmeichel play regularly when they were younger. So satisfying to see young players go on to greater things.

There's much less of a divide between players and supporters at the lower level too, you can actually have conversations with the players and manager. I really like that connection.

Need to name change back now I've properly outed myself Grin

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2021 13:44

@fairynick

Forget about the prem, it’s rubbish! Be a proper football fan, and support your local team - it’s the best football you’ll ever watch!
Totally

But I married into a Sheffield family, don’t live far away, and it’s all about the Blades in this house (Sheff United).

Iknowtheanswer · 12/07/2021 13:46

Support your local team, then play Fantasy Premier League and you can build your own team with your favourite players.

My club hangs out in league 2 most of the time, so Fantasy Football gives me a chance to get excited about the Premier League.

doritodiva · 12/07/2021 13:47

I'm
Villa. Had a st for quite a few years. Loved it so so much. However, it's not a cheap hobby. Go for a team local to you so you can go to a lot of games.

Zampa · 12/07/2021 13:49

Another vote for supporting your local (non-Premier League) or family club.

I'm a 4th generation fan of my club so had no choice on who I support. I now live hundreds of miles from the ground so can't make regular games, which makes be sad.

swampytiggaa · 12/07/2021 13:52

Husband is a Villa fan. Had a season ticket for over 20 years until we had the kids then went when he could until we moved to Devon.

Kids have had no interest in football which he was sad about but boychild has really got interested in the euros and is proudly telling everyone that Grealish plays for ‘his’ team so maybe that has changed now…

Pretty much all of H’s clothes come from Luke 77 now so they all have a Villa lion on 😂😂
