@Pebbledashery

Me I'm fucking tired. I'm gonna be dead by mid day.

@DuncinToffee Morning. I think we need an aftermath thread.

the80sweregreat · 12/07/2021 09:17

@Pebbledashery

Morning, who else is feeling bloody horrendous today?
I was yesterday, but then I thought ' it's only a game ' but I feel sorry for the ones who missed the penalties more really to be honest. Still , onwards and upwards! There will be other tournaments.
MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 09:19

@the80sweregreat

Morning. I feel hungover and didnt even drink.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 09:20

our junior school is opening later, which happens to have backfired: both kids were up at normal time anyway AND I can't go back to bed because they are still home🤣

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 09:20

I’m ok but I’d rather focus on how well they did so avoiding all the criticism etc of football / England etc elsewhere

We can get a more positive take - young players learning tough lessons they’re so close.

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 09:21

I’m glad I didn’t drink as it is a bit of a hangover feel

I had one glass of wine. Didn't sleep that well.
Everyone this morning looked miserable ..
But, nobody died , the team did come second against all the odds and it was penalties which is always a cruel way to end any match.
The Euros are only three years away too and World Cup next year as well.
You never know what will happen

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 09:31

@the80sweregreat

I look forward to next year.

We proved our worth to the world and we want more.

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2021 09:34

I am ok this morning, ok tired and still gutted but that is football. Disappointed now that it is all over.

OP posts:
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 09:38

whoever starts a World Cup thread or joins it would someone try & remember to tag me please?
I'm hardly ever on MN and only stuck around for the footie.
I really enjoyed our comraderie and would love to see you again.
But I'm gonna be off soon, I need to focus on other stuff.

Anyhoo, should anyone remember I'd appreciate a nudge.
Keep strong x

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 09:39

@DuncinToffee

I'm gutted but more so for the lads.

They really deserved to win. I hope they dont feel bad this morning.

Teddy1970 · 12/07/2021 09:41

Yep a bit gutted here but as everyone else says onwards and upwards, this loss will be a huge learning curve for the younger players and we'll come back stronger as a result.

Frezia · 12/07/2021 09:41

Congratulations to the English team for a very good performance at the tournament, you are capable of big achievements. You were able to hold your own well against the best side in Europe right now.
Southgate made two crucial mistakes IMO: playing too conservatively for the final and bringing in new players for the penalty shootout, surely he of all players should know what a pressure it is, especially when you're called up for that one thing. Anyway, he's done really well until now and I'm sure he has capacity for learning from last night's mistakes so things are looking bright for next year. I really feel for those who missed their penalties, especially Saka, and hope they can bounce back from this. Penalties are such a hideous way to decide a match.

Chiellini and Bonucci, what a team. Best defenders in Europe and possibly the world. Italy are top top class and there's no shame in losing to them.

RockStarGuitar · 12/07/2021 09:43

I think what is more gutting to me is seeing the racism directed at those players. The negative comments about Gareth on here and other social media are also very disappointing. As a nation, we need to take a look at ourselves. As soon as it goes wrong we look to blame and the nasty side of people comes out. Shameful.

the80sweregreat · 12/07/2021 09:45

Never mind, always next time!!
Been a funny thread and good to chat to people online.

Yes and least we weren't thrashed 5-0 or something, we've a great deal to be proud of.
MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 09:51

They held Italy and frustrated them for 120 mins.

Although, that Saka shirt pull should have been red. Nearly strangled the lad.

Teddy1970 · 12/07/2021 09:54

I know and the linesman saw everything and did fuck all, you can get your bottom dollar if Stones or McGuire had done that they'd have been shown the red card.

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 09:56

And the studs into Grealish's leg. That looked painful.

Have u seen the footage this morning of the fans beating up an Asian kid on the floor. It's so disgusting.
Idontlikeshouting · 12/07/2021 10:01

I agree @ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia - sleeping on it my thoughts are:

If we're honest, we didn't really have to beat anyone that good besides Germany. We had home advantage for the majority of our matches. It was a real opportunity that we should have taken but it's all woulda, coulda, shoulda...Italy were the best team in the tournament. Easy to analyse what they should have done after the event.

I feel that it will be hard to go to the World Cup and try to beat the South American teams as well as some of the European teams like France or Belgium, but a good thing about it being in Qatar is that nobody there will have any "home" advantage. As long as we give a good account of ourselves and keep the spirit we should do well. The feeling we normally have of England throwing it away and just not looking like they cared enough is definitely not a thing this time around. Let's take heart from that.

Finally I think all the hype and "coming home" mentality doesn't help and fires certain people up the wrong way. I love the songs etc but as long as the team have those sorts of pressures, like it's our right to win, and then abuse (often racist) when it doesn't go our way it really turns me off. I know it's a minority of idiots but it's shameful.

Agony...I'm sure I saw the Italian players studs go into Jack Grealish's nuts (lucky studs!)
Teddy1970 · 12/07/2021 10:02

Joking aside it must have frigging hurt...

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 10:04

I curse anyone who hurts my Hairband.
