COME ON ENGLAND!!!

OP posts:

Loved Southgate in his post-match interview - “it’s all on me”. He knows the pain of losing this way and he was there straight away to support his team verbally.

They will definitely be getting support - which will be much better than what Southgate received all those years ago.

And anytime anyone sees racist bullshit social media posts, please take the time to shout them down. It’s not going to end this crap, but call it out every single time.

As RedToothBrush said upthread, it’s a really disappointing result, but I don’t feel the hurt like I have previously. This team, with this manager, have left me feeling optimistic.

And to those critiquing the penalty taking styles. Each player has their own technique/style. Looking at it from the POV of matched betting or casino, I guess each technique is +EV for that player, but variance comes into play. Hopefully variance will turnaround for the World Cup.

@Lampzade

I'll own what I said and say that I shouldn't have said it the way I did. Saka shouldn't have been put in position but I'm sure Gareth knows that and can support him. Even pundits have agreed there

Dont appreciate being called pathetic though nor the personal attack.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2021 02:34

I was at a friend's but I've just read through this thread. I'm sorry it turned sour
The manager and team brought a lot of pleasure to people over the course of the tournament.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 02:56

@Furries

😉

Oblomov21 · 12/07/2021 07:12

I have woken up. Am disappointed, sad, and a bit cross we didn't play better in the 2nd half, (we played so well to start with). We didn't take advantage of the great opportunity that we had, this year.

I too have enjoyed these threads very much.

I think Southgate will face criticism. Up until now the golden boy who has managed the team really well, all his decisions, some of which were questioned, paid off. Until now. But this point has to come, unless we'd have won, that is!

And when penalties were even on the cards, my heart sank, because they are awful, brutal.

Pickford was great. To even save 2 is amazing. Macguires was stellar and showed how mentally strong he is.

The fact 3 of our youngest, black players missed, makes me fear for them. Southgate knows how tough this is, and wouldn't wish it on anyone, and I liked him comment about it being on him. And the backlash of monkey meme to Saka makes me so sad and furious.

In fact Ds1 jumped into my bed for a rare cuddle this morning, to tell me that many of his Twitter friends who are black and live in London decided to go home as soon as penalties were announced, because they didn't feel safe, almost feared for their lives. Makes me weep. So sad. Sad

Let's hope the criticism and nastiness isn't too bad.

I have loved the Euro's 2020. In 2021. Which will obviously now be a quiz question .... I think it gave us all a huge lift at a very much needed time.

Oblomov21 · 12/07/2021 07:23

penalty

Maguires penalty is so strong it breaks the camera. Ha ha. Love it. Grin

AndNobbyDancing · 12/07/2021 07:23

Oh, I've woken up and it's still the same result Sad but agree that we have an excellent young team who are just warming up for the World Cup.

The pp who said they aren't devastated like they were in 96, I agree but I think that is age, my kids are because they don't see the future in the same way.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the world Cup thread, thanks for the company.

Oblomov21 · 12/07/2021 07:32

This was my favourite part of the commentary last night. When they go round showing clips of the country celebrating. It's just fabulous.

celebrating

user1496146479 · 12/07/2021 07:40

@TwoYearsSince

My son is crying :(
Tough on kids. A bit like that poor German girl that got abused by English 'fans' when her photo was taking crying after an earlier game
Suranjeep · 12/07/2021 07:41

If they lost then I blame the guy who was videoed on twitter with his tiny cock out 🕵️‍♀️

RedToothBrush · 12/07/2021 07:46

Reading the tabloid press today is refreshing.

Nothing but support for the team. And only mild criticism for Southgate. He is tough. He can cope with it. He's had to for 25 years.

Hope the lads are properly looked after.

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 07:47

I’m listening to media round up and I’m glad there’s support and positive comments

I agree they are a fantastic team

I abhor the racism and hope majority pull together and get rid of that type of rot

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 07:50

I’m also glad we had these nice threads which were different to the rest of most of the site

RedToothBrush · 12/07/2021 08:03

Re the order of penalties. Arguably Kane had the toughest position going first.

Then if you are a striker, then no matter what your age, its part of the highs and lows to be doing penalties. They can't leave it for older defenders and midfielders. You have to deal with it as harsh as that sounds.

As it goes, should Saka have got it in, and then England subsequently won, he would have had the hero role. Southgate had no idea of whether it would go bad or good. He has to put faith in his team though and to tell them they could be that hero. He can't tell them in the moments before 'sorry you are too young if you mess it up'. He has to give them belief and trust them. In this sense its a situation where Southgate was always going to be be praised or criticised for things ultimately beyond his control.

As for how much the are paid. They are paid for club football. When they put on an England shirt they aren't playing for money anymore. It's a completely different psychological experience which brings the whole country with you. There are very different pressures as a result.

The disappointment this morning is only really the knowledge that we won't be hosting another major tournament for decades after last night. Clearly covid has build up the problem. It says something about a country's psyche. Americans storm the Capitol building. England storm Wembley.

I think this summer will generally be characterised by people losing the plot and doing wreckless, fuckwitted stuff after 18months at home, though sadly. No one died at Wembley thankfully. I fear deaths from the craziness over the next 6 weeks though.

Onwards and upwards. As Obama said, the course of progress usually has its set back. And as Southgate embodies - set back used well make you better people and can take you to big and better levels in future. Him taking responsibility is his burden. I hope the kids follow his example.

Heros all the same. Every last one of them.

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 08:09

Oh I wish I booked the day off. 9 hour day on 4 hours sleep.

Keep on going England ❤❤❤❤

VerticalHorizon · 12/07/2021 08:12

It's the World Cup soon. We have lots of reasons to be optimistic. We CAN beat Germany, we can stand up to the very best. We we closer to winning than any other team (bar Italy) and even then, it was largely in the lap of the Gods.

Proud of them all. We all should be.

Waitrosedisaster · 12/07/2021 08:20
@Waitrosedisaster I guess there's just something about Rashford that you don't like, that you can't quite put your finger on. 🤔 Something that makes you interpret his technique for taking a penalty as arrogance.

FYATHYRIN
How dare you accuse me of racism. What a horrible person you are. Not everything has to be about race.

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 08:22

@VerticalHorizon

Hugely proud of them. They did what some of the best English footballers ever made couldn't do.

They reached a final and made people believe that actually England can win. They deserve every inch of love and praise England can muster.

Two other English players missed penalties, its a lottery.

Even the very best and most experienced can miss or have one saved - i think Ronaldo has missed 9 penalties in his career, out of 48, thats like a 20% failure rate.

Had it gone in Saka would now be a national hero and GS hailed as an even more inspirational manager!

We were beaten by the best team in this tournament who deserved to the champions. However we took a good early lead and thought it was possible to hold on to a 1-0 lead against a team who have been unbeaten in their last 30 or so games including getting through Spain who out played Italy but lost on penalties. Italy dominated the game last night after England took the lead. Penalties continues to be our downfall as we simply do not have the conviction when it matters to slot home from twelve yards unlike nearly all other teams despite home advantage. We can build on this success with this young team but have to admit that unlike the usual big teams we’re had an easy group stage but could not even defeat Scotland and just managed to beat Denmark who overcame Wales with ease. At least this time England performed as well as expected if not exceeded expectations from making it to the final and losing on penalties against the best tournament team. However we could have won it even on penalties. I suspect against Argentina and Brazil we won’t have as much chance in the Qatar World Cup unless we get an easy group draw again and let the dominant teams take each other out first. England surprised me by convincingly beating Germany! Well done England as runner up is an excellent result. We just don’t do penalties just ask the manager. This manager by the way is like the new young squad the best manager yet! Well done England. Good luck next time. And let’s take the unnecessary embarrassing stupid senseless legacy hooligan racism out of the game too!
BrozTito · 12/07/2021 08:39

I should have said he takes them in training but icant remember if that was u21s now. Bloody impressive though

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2021 09:07

World Cup soon

But before that we have the Women's Euro 2022 held in England
