Gutted to see these threads have turned a bit.
I was heartbroken at the final whistle but I 100% back Southgate and every one of that squad, they have played immensely well, far better than we could have hoped at the beginning of the tournament. Imagine at the beginning being told we’d be going toe to toe with the Italians in the final? It would have been unthinkable.
My heart breaks for Saka, Rashford and Sancho. Young men who stepped up under enormous pressure and gave it a bloody good go. Southgate took it on the chin and said ‘it’s on me’. That’s a team. That’s a manager. And that’s something to be bloody proud of.
Pickford, Rice and Maguire played their socks off. Pickford saved TWO! Of their penalties. That’s something to be proud of. Southgate had those men huddled together within minutes telling them they were to be proud of themselves and you win together and you lose together.
I thought Italy did well to finish the match with 11 men on the pitch, I think their proclivity for rolling about on the floor like they’ve been shot meant England didn’t go for them in the midfield as much as they could have done. I think that’s where we could have done more. But we’ve learned from that. This is a young squad, they’ll come back next year bigger, better and wiser from tonight.
I’m gutted they lost. They are too. I can’t blame them for removing their medals. It must hang heavy round the neck when all you can think is ‘we lost’.
But they (and we) have so much to be proud of.
Until next time.
