Olympic Weather Forecast thread

I've dithered between putting it in this section and the weather section.....

Quick disclaimer: Remember I'm an amateur forecaster and so I do get things wrong. Please don't make critical decisions based on any forecasts in this thread!

I'll only work up to 10 days in advance (which is five more days than I do normally any more than that and it really is getting into utter guess work. Anything after 5 days is really just trends and possibilities) Also please bear with me if I dont get round to answering everyones individual questions. As we go through the days the forecasts will change.

So:
27th July (Opening Ceremony)
All 3 main models I look at are showing a low pressure developing to the south with a warm (hot in the se?) and humid air mass. This means that heavy showers are likely in the south possibly with thunderstorms. (nature adding an extra light show to the evenings entertainments?)

Sat 28th July
Cooler, with temps in the south in the low 20's. (In Scotland it looks bloody cold according to GFS, with temps struggling to reach 10C!) Unsettled with widespread showers.

"Sun 29th July*
Looking decidedly unsettled according to GFS with low pressure dominating and cool temps - mid to high teens pretty much across the UK. However ECMWF looks more optimistic with high pressure forming in the wings - so lets hope that is the more accurate model :)

OP posts:

morning all.

Sat 28th July
Much Cooler, with temps in the south in the low 20's. In Scotland it looks pretty cold with temps struggling to get much above the low teens. Rain is showing a north south divide with a few showers in the south of the UK, but the bulk being further north. Light winds.

Sun 29th July
cool temps - mid to high teens pretty much across the UK. Rain/showers moves south east rapidly through the day all areas likely to be affected at times, Light winds.

Mon 30th
Pretty much a north south divide until later in the day with the northern half likely to see rain followed by the south later but for the bulk of the day over England away from the SW not a bad day til later. Pretty cool day everywhere. Light winds.

Tues 31st July

A pretty revolting day tbh, lots of rain around. winds picking up a little, esp round the SW. Cool

Weds 1 Aug,
low pressure remains a dominant feature sadly. rather cool/cold and wet. quite strong winds for this time of year.

Thurs 2nd - Sun 5th (and beyond) continuing along the same theme.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 28/07/2012 08:46

Just to let you know, there wont be an update tomorrow, as I'll be at the olympics myself.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 28/07/2012 10:44

catch you all when I get back :)

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 28/07/2012 12:13

Seems pretty hot right now, hope it cools down this afternoon!

TeamGBsometimes · 29/07/2012 18:44

I hope you had a lovely time today, despite the spectacular rainfall. I was watching on the tv and thinking of you.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 29/07/2012 19:29

We had a couple of thunderstorms Grin One cloud-ground strike was rather too close for comfort!!!!! We, despite having full waterproofs, managed to get rather damp in one of the complete downpours! They weren't designed for sitting in puddles.

Did seem rather appropriate that it was an event I went to that got the spectacularly bad weather. :)

ajandjjmum · 30/07/2012 05:42

Hope you enjoyed it though Kitten!

Just watched dawn break over a beautiful clear sky - but like yesterday, can sadly see clouds building up.

Why do they leave the stadium lights on overnight? The electricity.......!!!

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 30/07/2012 07:44

morning all! do they really leave the stadium lights on? they could do some strategic spotlights if they want to make it look special at night without being so wasteful.
Going to try and pull a forecast together, brain is a bit mushy though!

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 30/07/2012 07:47

Today though looks a lot better for the london area, maybe the odd shower this afternoon but hopefully not as deluging. Temp pretty pleasant at 20c ish.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 30/07/2012 08:03

ought to comment that yesterday, whilst we did get a couple of deluges, for the rest of the day it was actually rather pleasant. Not hot, but the sun combined with a light breeze dried things off pretty quickly.

Today:
Whilst theres a fair number of showers likely for much of England and Scotland, I think the south will fair ok today. Rain moving into the SW this afternoon.

Tues 31st July

scotland and northen England have a pretty nice day in store. For the rest of us A pretty revolting day tbh, lots of rain around with a couple of weather fronts going through. Some pretty strong gusts at times.

Weds 1 Aug,
low pressure remains a dominant feature sadly. not too bad in the SE and east anglia for much of the day, perhaps remaining dry for most of the day with temps in the low 20's. Elsewhere showers, sometimes heavy and perhaps thundery. quite strong winds for this time of year.

Thurs 2nd
Scotland wet, elsewhere after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out.

Fri 3rd, Sat 4th

after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out. temps quite decent in the south.

Sun 5th (and beyond) continuing along the same theme.

ajandjjmum · 30/07/2012 19:24

Yes Kitten - they leave the lights on! I want to shout at Seb when I see it. I couldn't sleep last night, and everytime I opened my eyes, they were on!! Grin

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 31/07/2012 08:28

Good morning!
On the face of it the forecast looks quite grim again, but actually, when you look more closely, although probably all of us will see showers, there will also be sunny periods with temps quite pleasant in the south.

Tues 31st July

scotland and northen England have a pretty nice day in store. For the rest of us either damp or wet, with the worst of the rain going through the central UK. For other parts there will be dry interludes. The south will finish with some quite nice weather this evening.

Thurs 2nd
Scotland a damp start. elsewhere after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out, but not too bad really.

Fri 3rd,

after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out. temps quite decent in the south. Some places may avoid the showers including London.

Sat 4th
Widespread heavy and perhaps thundery showers. Looks pretty unpleasant.

Sun 5th
Another showery day.

mon 6th, Tues 7th
Perhaps a ridge of high pressure will help keep the south drier temporarily.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 01/08/2012 09:25

Weds 1 Aug,
low pressure remains a dominant feature sadly. Scrap the not too bad for the sE. showers or rain moving in, sometimes heavy and perhaps thundery everywhere. Improving later today.

Thurs 2nd
Scotland not too bad.. elsewhere after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out some heavy and thundery.

Fri 3rd,

after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out. temps quite decent in the south. Some places may avoid the showers including London.

Sat 4th
showers.

Sun 5th
showers, sometimes heavy.

mon 6th, Tues 7th
showers.

Can you tell I'm losing heart?

MarygoeZforgold · 01/08/2012 09:38

You know, you could save yourself a lot of time by just typing:

Shite weather, probably raining, the sun might come out for a bit but it won't last long, and it'll be cold and possibly windy.

And then "ditto" every other day.

It is really awful, isn't it? Though it seems a bit warmer in London, but that might be due to all the people sweating under their rain coats and raising the temperature a bit.

TeamGBsometimes · 01/08/2012 10:30

I don't know if I'm being ridiculously cup half full, but I thought the weather yesterday was ok. OYBBK had managed my expectations very well, so I went to the equestrian wearing waterproof trousers and a jacket, with dc similarly kitted out. We only had 20 minutes of light drizzle, whereas I had been expecting a full deluge. I'm just feeling very happy still Smile.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 01/08/2012 22:39

It wasn't so bad was it TEamGB :) even our utterly drowning deluges on Sunday actually didn't seem too terrible. ( Greenwich rocks!!!)

But yes maryz, I'm getting close to typing that. Note how my forecasts are getting shorter and shorter!

Windsock · 01/08/2012 22:40

It was hot today. Layers key. Plus cool feet. Not hot trainers

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 01/08/2012 22:41

That's a bugger for the athletes windsock.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 01/08/2012 23:06

Thanks OYBBK!

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 02/08/2012 08:40

You are welcome TDE :)

Thurs 2nd
Scotland not too bad. Parts of Northern England may miss the showers today elsewhere after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out, moving over from the west some heavy and thundery.

Fri 3rd,

after a pleasant start showers once again breaking out. Central and parts of northern England hanging on to the sunshine for the longest. temps quite decent in the south.

Sat 4th
Today the north half of Scotlnd is the place to be with much less in the way of showers. Elsewhere heavy, thundery showers once again breaking out. Perhaps clearing up in the far SE later.

Sun 5th
Away from the NE another nice start to the day. Once again showers breaking out., sometimes heavy.

mon 6th,
Very similar to Sunday.

Tues
Perhaps a drier day for many??????

Wed, 8th
Back to the usual.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 02/08/2012 14:19

convective discussion issued by TORRO - some of those showers could be rather lively!

amillionyears · 02/08/2012 14:29

Thanks for doing this op.From the little I know your predictions were pretty spot on.
Dont think I will bother with BBC Weather.
For the times I am going, looks like a pretty mixed bag.All I need to know really. Thanks from me.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 02/08/2012 18:55

You are very welcome :)

hillbilly · 02/08/2012 22:30

I'm interested in this thread not so much for the Olympics (as the events I am going to are indoors), but for the fact we are camping in Kent next weekend. Forecast seems to be warm and dry Thurs & Fri next week with warm and scattered showers on Sat 11th. However I bow down to OYBBK, sorry, now OYGGB and await her forecast Smile

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 02/08/2012 22:38

:)
At the moment it does look like things will temporarily improve towards the end of next week for the south. I hope it stays that way.

Won't be able to post tomorrow until the afternoon at the earliest. Will post as soon as I can.
